Yes, like everywhere , sometimes public schools even have to recruit from within just to get some kids to come out. Sometimes fellow wrestlers are the best recruiters in high school
Yes. Big difference though between athletic peers recruiting each other to specific sports and adult coaches recruiting other schools' student-athletes to their specific school.

I watch this kid wrestle and I see a kid i believe the ISU folks are really going to enjoy watching wrestle and rooting for.
Really hard to find anyone that disagrees with this. Probably the most universally well-liked wrestler that we've had wrestle in our tourney. Everybody not named for a legendary Flinstones character roots for the kid.

I've recounted this story numerous times on here, but it's always worth retelling. First time I ever saw him was at our youth tourney. This is a very good tourney, four to five-hundred kids coming in from all over - we've had lots of future D1 kids come through.

I see him warming up for the 12yr old, 100lb final (I think) and I'm a little upset. This is always a hammer bracket and I help with the separation. We've obviously screwed up with this one and put all the hammers on one side. Really screwed up. His opponent warming up has a low-cut freestyle singlet on, looks like he's 16 years old with acne all over his back and is pacing like a caged lion. Anderson is over there rolling his head around and rubbing his belly. He may or may not have had his glasses on - can't remember. Now I'm starting to get worried. This is looking like one of those matches where you have the kid laying prone on the mat for eternity afterwards, rubbing his neck, crying, Mom coming out of the stands yelling at the other kid, his parents jumping in, etc., finally the whole thing gets dumped in the TD's lap. Every youth tournament's nightmare that seems to happen at least once per tournament. I'm praying it's over quickly and bloodlessly.

Got my wish. I think Anderson was up 12-1 in the first when he pinned him. 1 minute periods.

He's like a better version of my friend and high-school teammate who wound up getting 4th place in the 1974 PIAA AAA tournament. I would have loved him coming to Penn State because I think he would have flourished in the culture, but I will be rooting for him (with the usual stipulation) at ISU.

You forgot out of shape and weak.

Goggles at his finest.

Hey come on, I stand by those comments. I distinctly remember keeping my intake under a 12 pack that day. In fact the last time I got pulled over I insisted to the officer I remain lucid until at least 18. It used to be a full case but I am not in college, formally training any more.

Weird coincidence!

Hey one last comment on my now classic controversial statements re: Ryan Anderson at super 32 a while back.

Listen to today's FLR episode opening - hilarious, and despite Willie's suggestion that I "watch more and write less", I will take their conversation today as total vindication.

As for the other stupid stuff I may have said in that post, I am not here to talk about that.

@smalls103

Is either of these statements true -- was Martin ranked ahead of Bo by either service at that time? The wrestling community (whoever that is) projected Martin to have the better college career?

Also did the rankings even correlate to that? IIRC some rankings aren't college projections, they're largely who you beat. (Strength of schedule presumably would favor east coast prep school Martin over Texas public school Bo.)

Certainly scored with Cenzo as the best non-Valencia.

true that, El Jefe

no one had Cenzo as high as me.

Curious Willie if coaches ever comment to you about rankings or is that something they do totally independent of sources like yourself? I’d think they may use it to a “certain” degree, thanks for the hard work

I have to say the "hit" ratio for both classes is pretty impressive, especially 2014.

I’d imagine hit ratio has increased with virtually all top kids wrestling each other in more tournaments and so many matches available for coaches and evaluators to see now online . Not much mystery anymore and can really get to know these kids via social media, the world is shrinking . All this helps the “hit” ratio. I think there is better coaching now at the Youth level, overall wrestling is just so much better . just my thoughts . Sorry for ramble

Brill was crazy good. He just was too hurt to wrestle. No way you could have known that about him. Don't beat yourself too much. :)

I don't yet have a suggested solution, but agree that we fans need to broaden our acknowledgements of Injury's role in narratives about a wrestler who "doesn't pan out" or "meet expectations."

Don't put expectations on anyone and you won't be disappointed. If the effort is there that's all you can ask for.

Rutgers just signed a Nationally ranked #1 wrestler from Eastern PA but you somehow missed that?
It will be interesting to see if Aragona develops for you guys.

I appreciate you pointing out that I failed to mention that 1 out of a 100 recruiting success.

As I pointed out in my post on your board, I now realize I stepped on toes and it is very obvious your fan base is quite satisfied with the current placement of the program. I sincerely hope your program's continued level of success.
