Wow. That’s a lot of work. Well done.

Heinselman bombing out would be shocking. He has a tough matchup against Medley to start, but one I'd still expect him to win. His is 5-0 lifetime vs Medley in college.

This is great work! Thanks for taking the time to run through it.

Respond to each of jmadden's posts, with your anticipated results. Let's see it. Oh, and you can't use Wrestlestat to look at records, head to head results, or anything else.
Madden made a good post and wrestlestat sucks but that is not some kind of personal thing against you. Improve wrestlestat and the jokes will cease.

So where do you go to look at guy's records, head to head results, projected dual matchups, etc? Do you keep your own spreadsheets of that for all of D1? I can't imagine life without Wrestelstat, personally. The rankings are about the last reason I go there, but they're still fun to see. And all of it done more or less for free by people who like this stuff even more than we do. Not sure why they'd ever merit "sucking"

There's occasionally a real head scratcher on Wrestlestat, but typically the outcomes are actually pretty good. I wonder how Wrestlestat would do in the pick your PSU wrestler contest from week to week. Someone should make an entry for Wrestlestat, just for fun.

Good to have you back, Andy. Place wasn’t the same without you.

I’ll try to remember to cut you a break next year from (presumably and approximately) 1/20/24 to 2/2/24.

I did for a couple of years. If memory serves, wrestlestat was bottom 1/3. I'll do it again next season to see if it's better since they played with the algorithm since last time I did it.

I only remember it for one year, and WS was bottom third.

However, the bigger question would be how WS performs over several years, not just during a single year. There are very few players who are consistently at the top of the KYPSW rankings.

Agree. I meant to do it this year, I think I may have even asked you if it was ok but I forgot to do it first match and just said screw it then. I'll make sure to do it from here on out.

But there are some that are consistently in the bottom half….

I fibbed a bit, I made it in the top 36.8% of regular season this year….

My .02 - I absolutely LOVE wrestlestat. I especially love being able to look up guys that are more unknown to see common opponents, records, etc. I am on wrestlestat during EVERY dual I watch. Sure there are occasional odd predictions and ranking questions, but make no mistake it is in my top 5 most visited web sites.

I have points per weight for all 14 teams. I will post Penn St as soon as I can. As many may know, Wrestlestat definitely underestimates bonus points.
This is true. I love the work Wrestlestat does and the mountain of information they publish FOR FREE. But, like any predictive model that’s only publishing a point estimate of the expected value and not a full distribution, it will severely underestimate the tail expectation. I other words, if it publishes that RBY beats someone by 6, that is the expected value of the margin of victory. In reality, that is just a point estimate from an underlying distribution of possible outcomes and there is something like a 5% chance he loses, a 50% chance of a decision, a 40% chance of a MD, and a 5% chance of a TF or pin. When you process all that, the point estimate is +6, or a comfortable decision with no bonus points, but in reality, there is a 45% chance of bonus that is not encapsulated in the point estimate.

@jmadden1998, did you save all of the individual match results? How difficult would it be for you to tally up each PSU guy's bonus points?
Steen 0
RBY 20 (1 bonus)
Bartlett 12.5 (0 bonus)
Van Ness 13.5 (2 bonus)

Interesting. As others have said, wrestlestat is often light on bonus and that would appear to be the case here, particularly with RBY, Haines, Brooks and probably Kerkvliet.

I can't believe after all these years, we're still debating the utility of wrestlestat.

It is probably the single best tool for college wrestling. An incredible achievement. It sucks at rankings and match predictions. Use it for what it's good for folks.

And so I'm not misunderstood, no smoke to @jmadden1998. This is a fun an interesting way to use it too. Just don't lose your minds when it predicts something wonky.

Remember, it's not a bunch of matches and you hit the highly ranked guys quickly. And the 4 guys you mention all have 1st round byes.

RBY - first match is Teske/Foley. Pinned both of them, but Teske almost avoided bonus altogether and Foley is hot and cold. A major isn't a crazy prediction. Then he hits Cannon/Ragusin. He's 0-5 on bonus against those 2. Then Mendez/Byrd. Didn't major Mendez. Never wrestled Byrd, but I wouldn't predict a major there either.

Haines - Likely Chumbley r1. Chumbley hasn't been bonused in 4 years. His average margin of defeat this year is 1.8 points. Legit AA contender. Not likely to bonus him. Then Coleman/Lewan in the semis. Went to SV with Lewan. Not likely to bonus either. Then Robb in the finals. Undefeated #1 guy.

Brooks - Definitely light here. Should at least major Soldano. Decent shot at a major in the semis over Finesilver/Assad, though he's never majored Assad before. Still only talking about a 1-2 point difference though.

Kerk - Seems right on the money to me. Major over Orndorff in the quarters. They've wrestled 4 times. He's beaten him by 8 twice and 9 twice. Then he has Cass and Parris.

There is only one fall predicted for the entire tournament. Cassioppi over Emerson from Nebraska in the first round. And only 2 tech falls. Spencer over Braxton Brown from Maryland in the quarters and at 184 Bates over Makosy in the first consi round.

Come on man. Despite the ask, why stop at just 4?

Just asking ... How does Haines get Chumbley? I have Haines wrestling Carr or Gilcher, and it will be in round 2, not round 1.

Too late.

You're totally right. I don't think he'd be favored to major either, but definitely possible. Especially Carr who might fade.

Wrestlestat has:

Quarters Haines 9-4 over Carr
Semis Haines 5-3 over Lewan
Finals Robb 6-4 over Haines

As an avid if not compulsive user of this Forum I will have to admit my ignorance of Wrestlestat. I will have to peruse it. Just what I need, another wrestling site to occupy my time!

You seem like a very reasonable man. I believe you will find the good in the site, which there is plenty of.

Yep, you're completely right and I was wrong. Really hadn't considered the byes at all and didn't look first to see what the matchups would be, but you're right, not a ton of bonus in those matches for the 4 guys I mentioned. Just a hasty and uneducated post on my part.
