Know Your Penn State Wrestlers (KYPSW) 2017-18

Really like how so many people are participating in this and hoping there are more before tonight hits. will be f** to banter about once the real schedule hits.

Latest count is 39, evenly split between the two boards. I can tell you from prior years, there will be a huge influx shortly before match time. I'm guessing we'll have 60-70, by the time all is said and done.

While it is okay to post both matches in one message, just bear in mind that should you have to change a pick for the second match, before I have scored the first match, I will have no idea if you edited your first match picks.

my suggestion for future weekends when there are two duals is to place each dual in a separate thread.

Yeah this really is the way it has always been done over at FOS... Otherwise as pawrestlersintn said, he can't tell if you edited the first match after it has already been wrestled or edited the second match in between..

Tom means in a separate thread, not separating the duals within the same thread. And, Tom, I hear what you're saying. I'm afraid if we have separate threads, then some will post their picks in one thread and some will post in the other. Then, I'll be trying to manage picks in two threads.

I'm going to let that idea bounce around my echo chamber for a while though.

I'm afraid if we have separate threads, then some will post their picks in one thread and some will post in the other.

I think folks will get with the process pretty quickly.

The other advantage is that as long as I'm free (won't always be the case), I can lock a thread once a dual starts, and thus there won't be any complaints about edits. The downside of that is that it wouldn't allow you to reply to that thread with the results.

Any idea of how you'd like to handle results posts? That could be a separate thread that is pinned. Let me know what you think would work best.

Steps for reporting results.
1. Copy results from spreadsheet.
2. Open a reply window to this thread.
3. Right click to open the toolbar with 'paste' in it.
4. Hover my pointer over 'paste', close my eyes, stand as far from my computer as I can, and click 'paste'.
5. Squint 1 eye open to see how awful the formatting got screwed up.

Haha.

As far as where I post them, in the past, there have just been two posts of results after each match, one for the match and one for season to date, within the one long KYPSW thread.

Let's hold off on making a decision, though, until I do see how the formatting is. If it is good, then a pinned post just for those results might work great. If the formatting is bad, I may just post a google docs link to the spreadsheet for people to look at.

Thanks for the ideas!

As far as folks getting with the process, you'd be surprised. No matter how much begging I do, some people still can't seem to format their picks "correctly."

Army Match Results

We had 58 players for the first dual-board KYPSW contest. There was fairly even representation, with 30 from BWI and 28 from 247Sports. That is very close to the number that we had last year and is a very manageable number for me.

Here's how this typically works...After each match, I will post the results and some commentary, usually with some words of praise for the match winner, and some words of derision for guys at the bottom or for someone that made some really strange prediction. And, I try to pick out anything that is noteworthy from the match scoring. It's all in good fun, so no one needs to get their feelings hurt. There's a good Ames2state joke in there, but I'll let it alone. Now, that joke is going to go over half the field's head, which is going to happen from time to time, since this is a dual-board contest. Oh, well, not really much we can do about it.

Without further ado, let's talk results. Scores ranged from 27 down to 20, which is not particularly surprising, because of PSU domination of their opponent. In fact in the 9 bouts other than 125, the picks were unanimous. Well, unanimous, except for one lonely pick of Caywood winning, but since this is the first week, we won't call out the guy who picked Caywood. Okay, Zepgraffiti? Picking the win type is always the most difficult, and where most people lost points was in being too conservative. I mean, come on Keener, dropping a guy in a headlock in your first Rec Hall match? Wrestlingeek and Tom McAndrew were the only two that saw that coming.

Speaking of Tom McAndrew, congratulations for being the Army match winner, with 27 points, 10 correct picks and 7 correct bonus types. Fire. At the other end of the spectrum, Dunkej01 earlier this week posted #whodoesntlikebraggingrights. To that, I say, #youhaveworktodo.

Thanks for doing this again, this is always a great contest.

On the Army sheet, there's a third section starting at column "AP" that's a bit confusing. It has my total right but the individual bouts are wrong (I had 285 by MD but it was a WBF, so I should have 2, but you have 3). I think that section is maybe a redundant, failed attempt at the previous section (starting at column "X"), which does the same thing except not sorted by standings order.

Sorry, but didn't want to start a thread. Is Cassar a sophomore? The athletic site says "Class: Sophomore, Experience: Sophomore". I could have sworn amongst his injury woes that he used a RS.

He is in his 4th year out of HS so he is a RS Junior, although PSU lists him as a soph for some reason. That said he missed 2 complete seasons due to injury so if anyone should get a 6th year it would be Cassar.

AP through AT are correct. I screwed up on everything to the right of that. Will be fixed soon. Thanks for pointing it out.

X through AM are the unsorted scores. AP to BD does an automatic sorting, and is supposed to report X through AM, based on rank.

He's a RS Soph, in terms of eligibility. He redshirted as a freshman. Due to the injury he suffered, he did not enroll the following year, which is the unusual twist to this story. He was enrolled last year, which was his RS Fresh season.

I don't know how the not enrolled component aligns with the NCAA's 5-years-to-complete-4-years-of-competition rule, which does make this somewhat confusing.

i can't access the link (probably work filters) but looking at the numbers i think the 157 column might be wrong. that column is tied for the 2nd lowest average (2.05) when the match had probably had the most likely result (nolf by fall).

also notable is that cassar DEC (2.91) and cenzo MAJ (2.78) were the highest averages
