Does Tom Brands make his wrestlers better?

Hey, @Ski . . . I see a mod tagged your post above with a warning that “Homophobic posts are not tolerated”.

I suppose they should not be, but did you actually have knowledge while making that post that every mod on this site is male? And who gets to decide whether your intent in that obvious joke was concerning sexuality, as opposed to, say, something else like plain old adultery?

Warning to Mod:
Threats to censor based on unjust assumptions are not tolerated.

Not only THAT GUY. I guess THEY don't want discussion. I guess it's like porn. THEY know it when THEY see it. How far BEYOND has this site fallen?

Is that Teflon Turk? Must have naked pictures of a mod and a Ferrari brother in bed or something.
The original Dave Barry joke was "pics with livestock" -- maybe that keeps you out of the crosshairs?

I wholeheartedly disagree a “better Iowa team makes a better penn state team.” This whole season refutes that notion. They finished fourth in the conference, will, maybe, finish top 10 at nationals, and we are going to challenge the all-time scoring record. Penn State’s motivation under Cael is entirely intrinsic.

The reason bitches like Wild Turd are so bitter and resentful isn't just because Iowa is losing. Guys like that are losers all their lives. What Penn State has done is to take the one thing in their lives they could find meaning in as winners, vicariously of course, and made them irrelevant.
I'm speaking overall for the sport of wrestling. I think we all can agree this year is somewhat of an anomaly with how good we are combine with their gambling fiasco lol.

Because that’s what we do!

Are posts making "fun" of someone's deceased son tolerated? The word "fun" is very loosely used here as it was perhaps the most unacceptable and disgusting thing ever typed on any forum. Of course, this is JMO.

I think any reasonable person should/does share your opinion. What puzzles me is why a person would even go down that road in an attempt to heap burning coals on another. What I can't begin to fathom is how/why WT is still allowed on here.

Not only has my wrestling knowledge increased by spending countless hours here, but my vocabulary has improved also : ) Speaking of vocabulary skills, I once told my squad of police officers I would buy lunch for the first one of them who would use the word gruntled when talking to the dispatcher. No one took me up on it. I think they just figured I was losing my mind in my old age, as if I was some fatuous antediluvian sergeant or something!
I used cromulent in conversation today.

Tom Brands has done more college workouts than all of the kids in his room combined. He is the epitome of "I wouldn't ask you to do anything I haven't done"
Same with Dan Gable only he had to have his hip replaced when he was only 49-years-old.

Their cowardice is able to be despica’d! 😉

Lol.....I too received a "knock it off" from a mod this morning in regards to a response to a Turk post. And here I thought I was going easy on the little man.
Hey you old jarhead. It's good to see that you're still winning friends and influencing people on here.

Agreed. I figure if I survived a tour in Nam I can certainly survive getting banned on here. I'm going to continue being me.
Good Nam story. My housemate in law school’s dad served a tour in Nam as a radio man with the infantry. Really good guy but very rule driven - for example, it drove him nuts that we didn’t have either a dining room table or smoke alarms in our grad school place (small ranch house on campus). My friend said his dad was very strict, serious, and never cursed - except one time.

My friend and his dad are down at Disney World waiting in a huge line at Space Mountain. As is typical in Florida it starts to storm while they are in line (late afternoon). Everyone starts scurrying for cover. My friend excitedly tells his dad - “dad, dad, everyone’s running - we can get to the front of the line! It’s only rain”

His dad puts an end to the plan: “Jeffrey. I spent 1 whole ****ing year in the rain humping a heavy ****ing radio while getting shot at - I’m not spending one minute in it ever again if I don’t have to!!”

And that was that.

That pretty much sums it up!!

I don't know why internet warriors from Pennsylvania are worried about Tom Brands. You should call him and tell him how to do his job.
I agree. I also wonder why internet warriors are posting on other teams sites.

You guys are projecting East Coast mentality and mannerism to midwestern people. I have met almost no losers in Iowa. They are salt of the earth people who occasionally get into heated arguments and let you know what they are thinking and feeling. To call them losers all of their life is so arrogant. Unfortunately, that is a sense I get from more than one poster over here.

Fun story, I bought an acoustic guitar from a guy who had jammed with the Brothers as well as with Randy Rhodes and a lot of others. We had talked a lot about his relationship with the Allmans and when I got home and started looking through the case I found, you guessed it, a silver dollar. Learned the song that afternoon.

you think the posters on here from Iowa represent Iowa? If you do, then there is a perspective problem. Vice versa btw.

Up here in Maine there is a group of Vietnam vets that get together every month to shoot the breeze and catch up. Pitteefool and myself are a part of that group. In reference to that song, each one of us carries a silver dollar with them in their pocket. Its our way of paying homage to those that didnt make it back home. Play on KC, play on

I think my issue with the OP was the title, more than the substance. Do T&T make their wrestlers better than they were coming out of high school? I think the answer to that is absolutely yes.

However, another question or two could be asked. Do Iowa wrestlers reach their full potential? In most cases I think the answer to that is "No." And, do Iowa wrestlers generally reach the best that they are going to be under the Brands, but begin to decline before the end of their college careers? Again, generally, yes. Finally, compare and contrast these responses with Cael and Company's approach.

So, IMO, the OP was generally on track with his message, but off the mark with the title. And, I'll admit, my comment should have reflected that back then, instead of the way I reacted.

I believe that one of the many reasons that our wrestlers continue to develop is because of Bonnie.

Don't disagree. I don't think anyone replied to my question after Bigs, but I didn't see her and was hoping all is well. Does anyone know why she wasn't there (or did I simply miss her?)

ACUHawk on GIA has it ALL figured out!

That is certainly a lot of adversity for the team to have dealt with in the 20-21 season. Thanks for sharing. Well done to our guys and coaches on winning the title that year in spite of all that. And, we definitely seemed poised to win in 19-20 as well. All true. But this is year 3 since that great two-year run and we haven't been close to PSU since (nor were we in any of the nine years prior to that two-year run). I think that's a problem. Do you disagree?

"The 9 years prior was poor and largely a result of the #1 class not panning out. And maybe there wasn't a quick enough response thinking everything was fine after winning 3 in a row. EDITED: So I would agree it wasn't at the level we want. And every response is meant with all due respect.

The last 2 years I previously addressed. Tom's next step was to secure a state of the Art practice facility. Cost doubled. Time line took years longer. Raising over 30 MILLION dollars is very difficult.
Do you disagree that the last 2 years were immensely affected by the Covid BS due to the enormous increase in facility cost and delay in completion? That affects the focus timeline to be all in on recruiting.

Just read a post by VHS alum that Tom is never at any events. Other posters immediately respond as "unacceptable" and "doesn't suprise me" etc. Tom was at an event not long ago while the other coaches ran practice. Posters need to realize just because some guy posts it on here doesn't mean it's true.

Just so you know where I stand. My hope or expectations are to be truly competitive with PSU 1-2 years every 5 year recruiting cycle. With the caveat that shit does happen. Look at the gambling this year that cost us a almost shoe in 2nd place. (not our goal but example of things to consider when judging a cycle). I acknowledge the train psu has going there. Tom got an amazing facility built. His successor is going to be walking into an amazing situation. Tom can now focus on landing more high end recruits. I think you will see over the next few years more guys on top of the podium.

I will say Penn State flat out cheated many years which gets glossed over. I have had direct conversations with athletes involved. The NCAA looked the other way. It's 100% factual and it often gets shoved away when the natives are riled up. Carl tampered with our roster 3 times that I personally know of. Their compliance also had a different set of rules than our regarding camp payments. Those are not small factors when wondering why we are behind.

I just don't think they're the answer to catching/surpassing PSU and, as I stated,
They're the only coaches in the country to do it more than once and I feel are still the only ones to have a chance at derailing that train. We can respectfully disagree.
I think their coaching/training system has several critical flaws.
You haven't been around for so many years that I can't take his seriously. No disrespect intended. They've also brought home more hardware than any other staff besides PSU. They must be doing a lot right.
. If practices are generally only 45-60 minutes these days, as you stated, then that would constitute a massive shift from when I was there.

You said in a subsequent post that guys were given a scouting report on their opponents before B1Gs. They did not do that when I was there. Neither did we wear rings to monitor recovery/sleep or have a big-name nutritionist or anything like that when I went through. 45 minutes almost sounds too short for a typical length of practice to me. I felt like the bigger issue was the amount of hard hand-fighting and long live wrestling goes within the practices when I was there, rather than the total length of the practices (although they probably were a bit too long). Regardless, those sound like good changes overall.

These changes have been well received by the athletes. Diets are changing. Smarter practices. Of course you can't make a kid eat what's suggested but it's been very high compliance as far as I know.
With regard to better wrestlers getting special treatment, yes I understand it happens at other places. That wasn't my point. As I said in the post you're referring to, the problem with TnT affording special treatment to better wrestlers (or any other examples of questionable decisions they might make) is that, when paired with their oft-repeated mantras such as 'you get what you earn' and 'do it right' as well as their heavy emphasis on clean living, they can come across to many on the team as a bit hypocritical.

I don't think it comes across as hypocritical at all. Every coach in the country preaches clean living. Brands preaches moderation. Like any coach, he would rather the guys not party. Every single team goes through what you are describing. Every coach in the country is a hypocrite if that's the bar you're setting."

I love that the rules were changed a few years ago to allow all schools to do what everyone accused Cael of doing and it helped everyone catch up so much that this will probably be Penn State’s largest margin of victory.
