2024 NCAA's - Day 2 - Match/discussion thread

Davis loss was expected. He needs to go sooner, maybe watching too much of Bartlett. I am also expecting Starocci and Truax to lose as well, but hope to be pleasantly surprised.

What was Davis complaining about to the ref in the last part of the match? Was he claiming that Figs grabbed the singlet?

Figs did lock hands twice.

Breadon was complaining to the ref instead of wrestling on bottom and neutral, freshmen mistake he will learn.
I’d have to go back and look. But I think Davis locked his hands on the “gut wrench” right before he gave up the reversal

Bad look all around for him. He couldn't get out from bottom, spent all of his time in neutral on a knee and then cried about stalling when he did it the whole match.
Still got to love having him on the team. Big surprise. Hope he can make a run on the back side and do some damage. I believe he also was arguing about locked hands, while trying to get out from bottom as well, and he actually stopped wrestling to talk to the ref at that point. Again, what a super surprise to have Davis wrestling at this level as a true frosh

Davis is probably the best defensive specialists at that weight. He slows everybody down. My guess is it's a combination of length and really strong hands. Nobody can move him.

But at some point, you're gonna get burned.

I don’t care what happened for 6:52. You can’t run away for 8 seconds and not get called. Backup a bit? Okay. But you can’t run away. Not for 8 seconds.
Sure, but Figs is the only one who attempted any wrestling moves the first 6:50 and his first stall was bad. Davis didn't earn that call.

That's it, you can win a lot of matches by doing that but you can't win titles. Sooner or later you're going to slip or make a small error and get burned. Davis was also stupid for crying to the ref for locked hands instead of trying to get out.

Figueroa has Noto in the semis. That could be interesting. As expected, 125 is totally a toss up.

Cael and Casey should’ve stripped down to their underwear to complain!

Figs probably locked hands momentarily but davis has to just wrestle.
I also thought Davis should have been called for locked hands when he gave up the reversal. He went to a chestlock to defend the double and locked it before Figs came off his knee and held it during the role through as well. He's still in control at that point. Ref and ASU coaches missed it.

Problem is they know no ref will call stalling there to affect a match. They would have hit him if the score was 3-1 since it wouldn't matter. Jones was crying about the fleeing the mat stall call seconds earlier, so they really weren't going to call a second one there.

There was definitely one, didn’t see the other 100%. But they were facing away from the coaches, which I’m guessing is the reason there wasn’t a brick.

Irregardless, you can’t leave it in the hands of the refs. Calls get missed, overturned, etc. If he gets the takedown we aren’t having this discussion. He’s a true freshman and will definitely learn.

Come back to get 3rd kid!

When the dust settled, the 4 semifinalists at 125 ultimately did end up being people who everyone thought would be a factor coming into this year. Ayala, Barnett, Noto, Figs.

He also was purposely dropping his knee to try to get that call. Refs aren't going to reward that unless it's locked beyond reaction time.

Moving on as I get my emotions get back under control…

Davis will have the winner of 5 Volk and 14 Provo in the blood round. Win that and he’s an AA. Then it’ll be Stanich/Ramos winner (assuming Stanich gets by Camacho) to improve placement on podium.

He will hopefully learn and just get the escape.
I understand the thought process because he knew he was in trouble with the RT and needed to steal a point back, but he certainly has no position to complain about stalling and gamesmanship.
