2024 NCAA's - Day 1 - Match/discussion thread

Deja vu

It's like Rogotzke's 10th win of the season where he gets taken down, gets behind, and goes head hunting for a pin. It doesn't seem like a good long term strategy, but hey, if you've got a knack for it...

Was Davis injured?
Yes. It looked like he hurt his hand or thumb at the very end. There were only about 20 seconds left and he was up 7-1, so he just stalled out the third, but he was clearly favoring it and trying to shake it out. There hasn't been any update (to my knowledge) about the severity (either officially or unofficially).

Overall I think a pretty good first round:

125: Davis appeared to to hurt his hand at the end but hopefully it is a non issue moving forward. He hit two sweet takedowns and I'm not sure once he steps on a mat he ever comes out of his stance.

133: Nagao was pretty disappointing, actually very disappointing. Only in on I think one shot, and got beat on every scramble. If something is off, I think it is in his best interest to take top. Hopefully he is awake now and can lock it in.

141: We've been saying the same thing for years about BB's offense. When he decides to go, he can get to legs, and scores more times than not. But he has to commit. The second of 3 consecutive weights that were lackluster. Many people were worried about Matthews but worry not, he is wrestling Moore.

149: It's really hard to use the freshman excuse. Especially since his teammate is in the same boat and rose above the bright lights. Add in the fact that Kasak was wrestled on the world stage, he should be battle tested and prepared for this. I think the turning point in the match was riding so long in the third. I'd rather have 2 minutes to get a takedown and then worry about riding, instead of limiting the amount of time to get said takedown. Hopefully he makes a ton of noise on the backside and shows everyone it was a fluke match.

157: The start of the rejuvenation. From here on out was basically what was expected and they've been doing it all year.

165: Ditto

174: Do I think Carter is 100%? No. However, like others have said, he has notoriously paced himself in every single tournament. We will see how he looks tonight and reevaluate.

184: In my opinion, the biggest surprise of the first round. Wrestle like this throughout, and I think he'll be wrestling Saturday night.

197: Brooks things

197: Kerk things.

Biggest upset in Rd 1:
Im going with 28 Diego Sotelo over 5 Jore Volk. This is really the only guy I seen people were picking to possibly win the weight that lost.

He hurt it in the first I believe.

Guys, it's NCAA's. There aren't any easy wins here. I'm disappointed, as, like most, I expected 10-0 Nagao just doesn't have quick feet, and it cost him. I didn't think he lacked aggressiveness, he just got out-wrestled. For Kasak, he was the more offensive guy, he just couldn't finish it. I knew Abas was a dangerous 1st rounder, but, I expected a win. Oh well, hopefully those two find some backside magic, though, it's going to be a tough road.

I'm a bit worried about Davis' hand, but, hopefully, they take care of it.
Carter is obviously not 100%. There is a reason he chose neutral.

157-285 were on a mission. Nice work.

You know things are bad, when the board is in depression mode, while, we all know there is no way we are losing this thing!

Was this before the stoppage because that happened right in the center
Not sure if we are even talking the same bout, but the one I saw was OOB and the guy seemed dazed like he hit his head OOB. Came across as a concussion. I was watching 8 mats and two screen so moved on. IDK

It's like clock work. I told a good friend (PSU roommate actually) just this morning that PSU fans would have to face some disappointment and that there WOULD BE a few losses that weren't entirely expected in this tournament, it's how it works. And as always, there will be a few insufferable "fans" that have to wail that the sky is falling because we're not leading after round one (or only leading by single digits).

PSU is fine. Nagao will wrestle back or he won't. I hope and think that he will, but if not, it's his disappointment and not really mine. I think Kasak will wrestle back hard and make it to the blood round at least. Everyone else is where they should be and will continue to win (and in all likelihood we'll have one, two or three of them still lose in the coming rounds too. It happens).

It is a shame that they missed Starocci's pin though. I've been on record all year as believing that PSU will NOT break the scoring record, but I'll take any bonus points we can get along the way, obviously.

Ok solid first round davis seems to jamed a digit but should be OK, Carter can't shimmey around for a take downs and is not 100% but he still dangerous. So MM looks very good , Bernie can beat any skinny leg guy but struggle with thick leg guys , Levi, Brooks, Greg, and maybe MM looking next topicish.

Kinda stuff that makes our thread here the hest every year. Never really having to go look fir info. Someone always delivers...

Some of the tougher elimination bouts happening already tonight:

125: 5 Volk vs (former AA) 21 Kaylor
141: 7 Happel vs 10 Jamison
174: 5 Conigliaro vs 12 Kennedy
184: 8 Wolf vs 9 Berge
Happel-Jamison and Wolf-Berge are rematches from b12s. That is a rough first round consi as a top 10 seed
