Why is Penn State lagging behind in women's wrestling?

This was the topic that kept coming up over this past weekend. We were treated to outstanding women's wrestling (which has been the case for at least 6 years, honestly, at Final X and OTT). We hear that Audrey Jimenez, the high schooler 50kg finalist, is going to wrestle at Lehigh this fall. Women's wrestling is the fastest growing sport in the USA.

And we sit there wondering why PSU doesn't have a program and there seems to be nothing on the horizon. Isn't it way past time that Penn State gets its act together on this one and consolidate its position as the center of the wrestling universe in the USA? Why does it sit there watching the bus leave the station?

"DT will listen to Iowa's pitch"

This, coming from a HVI respected and good poster @vhsalum over at GIA this morning. He states:

"Now the biggie - yes. Kyven was right. The AD has plans to talk to DT. She is dead serious about WINNING chips again. She's not particularly happy with Tom at the moment. The gambling, the ferrari situation, and this performance - she's holding Tom accountable and will be looking to do what will have us beat carl. She is VERY AWARE of the legacy of Iowa wrestling and how we're falling further behind. Like I told you earlier, she shut down AJ coming in in January - she's not a fan and isn't a fan of Tom's decision to bring the circus in. She also told Tom to get a hold of Terry - it's why he's been "less" in the corners.

Now how this got out? Not sure, but it likely means there are Tom loyalists who wanted it leaked. Because the plan was to wait until after the Olympics to talk to DT. So now that its out, not sure if this will accelerate talks or stop them completely."

"I've heard he'll (DT) "listen" - basically, the offer would have to be everything and more."

How would this work with Toms contract running through 2029? Will they both coexist or will Tom get canned for it to work?
"canned"

Interesting rumors for the Monday morning after!

NFL Draft thread....

May as well get it started.

I'm guessing on the positions for the first 4 picks for the Steelers (4 in rounds 1-3).

- OT (I'd love to see Olu in Black and Gold) but he's a L-OT and Steelers seem to be looking for a R-OT...
- C
- WR
- CB

Also believe the Steelers have a 50-50 chance of trading up (somewhat) or down (moreso) in the first round and possibly going for a Center instead of an OT. The Steelers new GM is a wheeler-dealer.

** Not just a Steelers thread, but we'll all likely respond towards our "home" teams.......

Carter's FLO video.....

Apparently just went up. He talked some about the trials and the problems with trying to cut, trying to heal and to wrestle at a high level. What may be more interesting is that he now says that he's MORE LIKELY THAN NOT returning (he says 60/40 in favor of returning). He also mentions that Cael mentioned the possibility of him bumping to 197 for next year. Hmmmmmmm.......

PSWC Banquet on Sunday, April 7, 2024.

Thought I'd post this to find out who's attending and for comments before and after the banquet.

I'll be there, God willing, and I am looking forward to seeing Carter and Aaron honored for being 4× Champs. Aaron will also receive his Hodge trophy, which will be pretty cool. I'll be interested to see who comes out with the seniors to give their speeches.

The PSWC banquet is always a great wrap up to our wrestling season, and I'd encourage anyone who hasn't attended to put it on their bucket list. Great place to take your family too. The wrestlers are very approachable at the end of the banquet for pictures and conversation. Just a great overall event.

Just want to finish by thanking the volunteers with the PSWC that make this possible!

'79 Sugar Bowl

To spice up the board a little I figured I would try to get a discussion going about this game. Kind of a downer I know as it brings back bad memories to those who were of age to remember.

For me personally I didn't watch the game. My family took a vacation to Southern California that year and we went to the Rose Bowl game. I was 12. By the way, that Rose Bowl game was USC vs Michigan with the infamous Charles White leap for a TD that was not a TD. Hilarious that Michigan got hosed on that call. Schmuckbechler would have found a way to blow the game even if they didn't give USC the TD on that play.

Back to the Sugar Bowl.

Anybody on this board go to the game?? What was the atmosphere like? I bet it was mostly a Bama crowd but I think Penn State brought a lot of fans. This game had to have been very exciting to attend as a PSU fan. The vibe in the PSU fan section had to be electric! It was Joe's first opportunity at a clear cut national championship.

The run started in '77 with the only blemish being the Kentucky loss and closing that season with an epic win vs Pitt in the snow and crushing Arizona State in the Fiesta Bowl.

In '78 we were great and I attended all of the home games including our thrashing of Maryland and then beating Pitt. I love to this day Joe's decision to go for it on 4th and goal at the 3 and Guman walks in with the pitch. One of the iconic PSU plays for sure. I also was in Ohio Stadium to watch us dominate OSU 19-0.

So now we are pitted vs Bear Bryant and Alabama. We lost to them 3 years earlier in the first game ever in the Superdome.

Our defense was stout. Millen and Clark were great and we also had Lance Mehl, Joe Lally and Larry Kubin who were all very good. I think Pete Harris got a huge pick in this game. The teams were evenly matched.

I recently watched our TD and Fitzkee makes an unbelievable catch in the back of the endzone. Incredible balance and footwork to get his foot down. Better catch than Garrity's in the '83 Sugar Bowl, in my opinion.

On the goal line stand....Ugh! Why did we run it 4 straight times?! I think we ran it 4 straight, right? What were we thinking on the 4th down play?? I have read that Joe wanted to pass but he got talked out of it?? I think that was in one of the books about him.

What should we have done?? We must have had a play to simply slip the TE out?? It would have been Mickey Shuler, right? Or we could have faked Suhey up the middle and run Guman wide. There were other options as well. Bama totally sold out on the dive play. It's like they knew that was the play we called! Man, I think how sweet it would have been to have won that game! Joe never beat Bear Bryant unfortunately.

I have read that Joe admitted in one of the books about him that he seriously contemplated retirement after this game since it was such a devastating loss. Thankfully he did not.

Interested in the board's thoughts on this game from all perspectives and from anyone who attended.

Site has become stale. Very few interesting threads.

I get that we are in the off-season. But there are lots of players entering the portal, committing to new schools, the NFL draft is this week, etc. We just have very little discussion of it here. And there are few OT threads that are interesting. Those used to be a big part of this site during the off-season. But we can't have that anymore. Too many people take offense to anything said.

I hope that the site doesn't die off but I'd have to believe the traffic is declining. Is there something we can do to grow the community here? Are there any OT discussions that are interesting that we can add that won't trigger easily offended posters? Any new thoughts or ideas to revive this site?

And for the record, the other site that bolted from here is just as stale.
