What was the DOJ doing in Iowa? -Tom Brands

Show me one FACT, just one. All the data I've found is of the age group 18 - 38 or 18 - 44. I want FACTS based on college age, you know, 18 - 22. Show me.

Here's a fact, I have two daughters. One graduated in 2021 and the other in 2022 both from PSU. I asked each of them if they knew any girls that had on-line betting apps and would place bets and neither of them could think of anyone.
They probably even laughed at you when you asked. I can’t imagine a lot of college age girls into sports gambling beyond the dorm NCAA tournament brackets that almost everyone does because it’s a fun, communal thing. I mean, it’s preposterous on its face.

And I’d love to see the methodology.

If there was some general question (I.e. have you ever gambled on sports, including filling out NCAA brackets or Super Bowl grids), I could see pretty high participation even with non-sporty college girls.

Anything more involved beyond that, my strong assumption is that college girls gambling On sports is pretty much negligible. I did a quick survey of all my female colleagues around that age and - to a woman - they laughed and said the number would be tiny.

Well in the defense of @James P. Whitters III he did reply to the same post twice. That is two paragraphs.
Let's take it easy on @James P. Whitters III . He hates Iowa more than any of us.

This probably isn't going to give you what you're looking for, either. The cohort of college age women in general probably gamble on sports a lot less than men, but for there to be cause to just ignore women's sports in this investigation, it would have to be that college women athletes in D1 programs also gamble on sports less than male athletes. I suspect that the gender difference in sports gambling among D1 athletes is significantly more narrow (or possibly nonexistent) than among college students or college-age people in general. Were your daughters varsity athletes at Penn State?

I'm guessing you haven't been following this very closely. You are way off in your guess of how this started. If what you guessed was true it would be no problem. It was quite different. It started with an abundance of extra budget money in a "spend it or lose it" situation. Two rouge officials made a decision based on personal dislike of two Universities to try and hurt particular athletic teams. It was never about protecting the state or ridding us of crime. We have fentanyl flying into our state and young people are dying but this is how we choose to use our money. These two guys will be fired and very lucky if that ends up being the extent of punishment. The state will settle the civil suits for a few million, and things will move on as before. This isn't in any way to me about athletes being suspended by the NCAA. It is about the people we pay to enforce our laws deciding to go on a personal vendetta against a certain portion of our state. Basing an investigation on Sex,race, or religion in Iowa is frowned upon. I would be equally upset if they had decided to only investigate Catholic girls of Hispanic descent who attend private schools. Investigations are to be conducted within the law and for reasons that involve making our state a safer, better place to live. This investigation was neither within the law nor brought about because of a desire to protect Iowa's citizens. This will all be shown if the state doesn't settle before the trial. The surveillance without a proper warrant will be talked about plenty moving forward.
Let me be clear for you and turk. I was not offering any definitive answer as to what happened I was stating a hypothetical and I said that in the post. However, I don't buy into conspiracy theories about how schools were targeted by someone who doesn't like them just saying. And if these kids never broke the rules they wouldn't have anything to worry about

It’s the Michigan response - “everyone else is doing it - why are we being punished”

First congrats on both daughters graduating from PSU. With all due respect I’ve got kids of my own , tons of friends whose kids are in or have been in college , I know d1, d2and d3 kids . I can tell you without a doubt that college kids gamble both men and women .

Second any form of sports gambling is bad including those pesky just for NCAA brackets in March . There was a time even that wasn’t allowed not sure if that has changed or not. Let’s not try and move goal posts .

Third with the study you found on 18-38 year olds can you please provide the link . I’m curious as to why any study with that age group didn’t break it down farther especially if the 18-22 year old bracket had a percentage of zero.

I’ll wait for the link to the study you mentioned then try to conjure up some Facts. Maybe I’ll look at some old postings

I just checked a couple of articles that claim to have done a study. Their definition of gambling includes: Lottery Tickets, in-person Casinos, on-line Casinos, Fantasy Sports, and on-line sports app. The data is worthless.

Actually if you’re doing a study on gambling most of what you just mentioned isn’t useless.

Was bummed to not get the link to the study you mentioned.

In previous postings I mentioned the ncaa study I assume Tom brands was referring to during his press conference , ie his 56 percent comments . I also mentioned the ncaa conducted another study involving athletes only . I haven’t looked for those results yet but when I did the other day I didn’t find them

If you read the following information on the first page and then take the link to look at methodology used you find a pretty good breakdown of what is meant by gambling .

If you read this and still think college age woman don’t gamble then we can just agree to disagree .

There are tons of other less factual circumstantial links I could provide but there would be no point .

The study fails to clarify the responses from student athletes vs their non-athelete student peers. Valuable information that would provide an indication as to the effectiveness of NCAA education, rules and restrictions for student athletes in particular.

Very true I think I said that in my third paragraph above and I assume the second study will answer even more questions .

I assume the results of the second study based off the timing of when it’s done will interfere somewhat with the outcomes

I think even with this study you can infer statistically speaking that woman and men athletic or not gamble. Do you not agree ?

And to be fair the question here was simply do college age woman gamble .

I read it and this is what the college students bet on. Wants bet which ones the girls considered betting? Wait, are you from Iowa?

Placed a bet on a sports event or league using a mobile app or website 27.5%
• Played daily fantasy sports on a mobile app or website with money awarded to you if you perform well
24.5%
• Participated in a betting pool on the results of a sports event or league with money awarded to you if you
perform well 18.4%
• Participated in a season-long fantasy sports league with money awarded to you if you perform well 18.3%
• Placed a bet on a sports event or league with a bookmaker (bookie), including bookmakers who are friends,
family, or acquaintances 16.0%
• Placed a bet on a sports event or league at a casino or in-person sportsbook 14.3%
• Placed a bet at a racetrack 12.5%
• Placed a bet on a sports event or league using an online sportsbook located outside the United States 12.2%
• None of the above 42.1

The 42.1% of "respondents" for the "None of the above" category are probably girls buying an occasional lottery ticket, most likely to give as birthday and Christmas presents.

You somehow didn’t read the line just under the part you cut and pasted that says 2/3 of men bet on sports as did 51 percent of the women .

This next link is several years old you might find it easier to find what your looking for since in most browsers it should highlight what your looking for

If it’s not highlighted read the second bullet in its entirety. 24 percent of men student athletes admit to breaking the rules 5 percent of woman student athletes admit to breaking the rules . That’s just who admitted to it and it’s 7 years old data before the total explosion of gambling …

but yea your right , college women don’t gamble , you have a daughter and she asked her friends and I’m apparently from iowa 🤣

My daughters told me they never drive over the speed limit and neither do any of the friends. No reason to ever ticket a female speeder. They don't exist.

Yep, 51% of females buy a square on a dorm floor superbowl watch party.

All of this is a gigantic distraction from the facts that some athletes in Iowa (allegedly) broke a law that they were trained annually to comply with, including some who tried to circumvent by having others place the bets in their behalf; and that others are excusing it.

Well, not all were trained annually. Some cut class that day.

Should have known that as soon as some hawks got suspended that Tom and the GIAs are “the most knowledgeable” when it comes to illegal investigations and women’s gambling stats.
Suspensions, anus displaying, the GOAT getting decked, bigbucksbobbybadass getting snubbed, etc have fans pining for the days when their guys just poached deer, burglarized homes and shot each other

MAJOR BREAKING NEWS OUT OF IOWA: After auditing records from the last 16 years head Iowa wrestling coach Tom Brands now has definitive proof that the Iowa state police have written in excess of 740,000 tickets for speeding and EVERY SINLGE ONE OF THEM HAS BEEN IN THE STATE OF IOWA. This brings the corruptness of the whole Iowa justice system to light, do they really expect us to believe that people don’t speed in other states? After completing his audit Brands was heard screaming in the Iowa locker room “What about all the dad gum sports cars people drive in California? Those things go 200 miles per hour!!!!”

The idea that there's a travesty to untangle because women also gamble reminds me of the argument that Ladies Night drink specials violate the equal protection clause (yes, numerous lawsuits were in fact brought under that theory). It's not exactly the same thing but I'm embarrassed for you in the same way.

Exactly

College females do gamble. Why are you pressing so hard to deny this fact?
Every single person on this website would support the state of Iowa expanding the investigation to include female student athletes in the state of Iowa. You're arguing with yourself.

The sooner you realize your are beclowning yourself, the better for everybody involved here.
