I noticed one theme in the discussion on the Monday BWI report......and that is that Sean Clifford should get better as we move further into the season away from the Iowa injury. Obviously, time should heal all injuries, but does playing help heal? If what we saw on Saturday is the player we see the remainder of the season, it does not strike me that playing is helping the healing process. he actually seemed to play worse as the game went on.

what option do you think the coaches have?

The coaches have no other “reasonable” option but to play Clifford. We saw the other option in the second half of Iowa. In my opinion, Roberson has been given his walking papers.

Sadly, I believe you're right. If you don't give Roberson a single snap in the Saturday debacle when do you unless Clifford can't play. Hell, even Warren got more play time at QB.

Saturday was the perfect chance to get TR planned meaningful snaps. Home game, 2 weeks to prepare, and a supposed bad opponent. He might as well pack it up now.

Hard…..actually impossible….to believe they couldn’t play him even as a wildcat and just let him run wide for a series or two.

After 3-4 runs a toss on a reverse to Dotson would go for miles.

Or a jet sweep to Dotson and let him toss a pass.

(And of course they didn’t roll out Clifford once….but that’s another issue altogether.)

Maybe so........ but this coaching staff has shown talent can go elsewhere and grow. I am more a fan of Roberson being a QB than an excuse of why he doesn't cut it . That's on the coaches

The main issue with Roberson at Iowa was the numerous false start penalties. That wouldn't have been an issue at home. He couldn't have been much worse than Clifford was Saturday.

Totally agree. if nothing else he is a better option for the two point conversions in overtime because of his elusiveness. He has completely fresh legs.

Not playing Roberson at all does not make sense. A small number of specific plays in an offensive series to give SC a break seems reasonable at the least. The only thing I can think is that Roberson has an injury as well. I have not heard a single inkling about any injury …..it just does not make any sense. Can he be that bad? I doubt it. At a minimum he would have added outside running ability which the team has yet to display this year.

The coaches were obviously saving Roberson for the Ohio State game! 😀

Depends on the injury….some injuries hurt, but aren’t going to get worse or stop healing if you play. My son tore a muscle in the last scrimmage game prior to the start of his senior baseball season. Hurt like hell and he limped around the bases after he hit the ball. He still played every game and it got a little better each game.

I saw that as well and asked why he thought that. They (or at least T-frank) is putting everything on Clifford getting better. He's right if Clifford was to get healthy everything changes. But from what I saw on Sat. Sean would have to have some kind of miracle cure. I thought he looked about 75% healtlhy at the start of the game and about 50% when it ended. I don't see how he's going to heal if they can't rest him and obviously they trust none of the backups, that they have been coaching for the last 10 mos, to even take a snap. So not sure how Clifford gets back to being healthy.

Optons...options...hmmmm....
Yea I got nothing. The staff made their bed with the back up QB's and it was an epic fail.
Maybe you let Roberson and Veillux play the OSU game and take their/our lumps. And Try, Try, Try to get Clifford healthy.
He's our only hope for getting to at least 8 wins.

For what its worth, I would have done that with Illinois and try to get Clifford a 3 week rest before the rest of the meat grinder.

And if you put him under Center and go with an early count that probably eliminates most of the false start penalties.

Well nothing says healing like playing the OSU defense with a swinging gate OL in front of you. I hope they save a bed at Columbus General for SC.

Maybe Roberson is in the doghouse for some reason we don’t know about. But that possibility will probably never be revealed.

I think it is criminal playing and leaving SC in a full game to get further unhealthy. I have a feeling the team physician is a yes man to CJF. He is a family medicine doctor who holds himself out to be a sports medicine physician. If you remember, CJF fired the previous team physician, an orthopedic surgeon because he would not permit guys who he thought were too injured to play against Franklin’s wishes. In my experience, orthopedic surgeons have greater knowledge in understanding sports related injuries than a family practice doctor with maybe a one year fellowship in sports medicine. I know because I have spoken with both specialists quite often regarding certain athletes injuries and there is a world of difference between depth and breadth of knowledge.

I don't think thats correct. I think Sebastianlli (SP) is back with the program.
And if that was the case we would have seen Clifford against Iowa.

Does anybody know how things went in practice for the two weeks leading up to Illinois? From what I read is some posts and articles, Clifford did not practice much, if at all. I think Roberson and Veillieux split the reps 50%. So, the coaches MUST have seen that Roberson was not progressing enough over two weeks to be able to lead the team. The team was probably negatively responding with their confidence and demeanor as a result. Maybe Roberson was psychologically shell shocked from what happened at Iowa and was playing worse than before. He looked and sounded shell shocked to me in his post game interview. I would think that if Roberson showed he could LEAD the team for the Illinois game by showing it in practice, the coaches would have let him. I trust the coaches decision.

I stand corrected. You are correct. That’s what I get for listening to a person who gave me a couple of years old news without fact checking it myself. Still a bad decision keeping SC in the game IMO.

Hope your wrong about Roberson. Feel sorry for him. He's the victim of a very poor and short-sighted coach. He was a four star QB in the 2019 class. This staff had plenty of time to work with him and failed miserably. This is on Franklin. He's making the big bucks. CJF apparently took the 2020 year off as indicated by our 4-5 record.

Or maybe more likely he's now in a system that he wasn't recruited for, and he was never that good to begin with

Warren couldn't throw a 2 yard pass that would have won the game so please stop with the "get Warren snaps".

Clifford got hurt late in the third quarter on a cheap shot by an ILL DL that should have been flagged. It was flagrant, IMHO. They showed the replay, like, 20 times.

CJF should have played Roberson at that point, at least one series. My guess is that we were nursing a 3 point lead and CJF went with SC to at least NOT turn the ball over instead of Roberson who was more risky. We had no QB running option at all so the RPO was virtually useless, and that is our bread and butter play. Also of note , is that Cain and Lovett were coming off of injury and Key got hurt during the game. I have no idea how healthy they were but it is clear that we did not have a 100% RB in the Q4 or the 9 OTs.

He is a running QB recruited for the old RPO offense. He no longer fits the offense we are running. But he should have been inserted in the third quarter to run some plays. His legs could have forced Ill to change their D. Maybe break a couple longer runs and get some momentum. And having Clifford watch a couple series may have helped him see what is happening.

But with such a tight game the coaches feared a turnover would turn the tide against us so they wouldn’t take the risk.
No guts....no glory.

Seems we haven't had a RB since the "almighty" Seider got to town. Our backs are slow, don't hit holes, and are a huge disappointment. But at least Seider was able to pull John Dunmore to Penn State.

You misread my sentence on Warren. I was just stating he got time st QB over Roberson. It was cute the first time. That's it. I don't care to see Warren back there again.

Franklin said on the pre game radio show that he told Sieder that there were too many coaches coaching the running backs. Too many opinions. He says he told Seider to tell them to just hit the hole and run. (paraphrasing)

Well if the hole is intended to be a couple yards in the backfield the RBs are doing a damn fine job. The OL is terrible at run blocking and the current crop of RBs aren't able to create on their own like Barkley and Sanders.

Well....He was here for Miles and that worked out pretty well. Journey Brown was another one and that worked pretty well. Cain was one of his and he looked pretty good until his injury.
But yea this year has been bad. Cain is a shadow of his former self, its like watching Aaron Harris after his injury. :( .
Lee looked a little better on Sat. but now he's hurt. Lovett has not been the wildcard I thought he would be. Ford is now hurt as well.
Holmes has been MIA and not sure why. He was good enough to play last year and Lord know we could have used him at times this year.
But Seider does have "run game co-ord" next to his name so I'd like to know the input he has.
but there is something fundamentally wrong with our running game and OL. And as crazy as it sounds Kirk C. had a better run game and OL last year.🤷‍♂️🤪

Of all those you listed, Journey Brown would be the one that Seider should hang his hat on...very fast and athletic, but much more raw as a RB than Sanders was...and he DEVELOPED in the program...

Concerning your Cain / Aaron Harris comparison...ouch...it actually seems to fit, except that it is unclear that Cain is at his recovery ceiling...it is possible that he is recovered from injury, but not back to his peak performance... 🤷‍♂️

thats what I'm hoping for as well. But wasn't or isn't it 2 injuries to the same foot? Yikes.
