App St scored 28 in the 4th

Lack of pass rush had been a problem for awhile. Giving QBs time to let receivers get open downfield makes average QBs look like Heisman candidates. Not implying App St QB wasn’t good (he was, for sure) just that pressure and being forced out of the pocket gets them off their game.

That means we'll be playing in the Super Bowl for two consecutive weeks. First it was the App State Super Bowl then it will be the Pitt Super Bowl. It's a brutal way to start a season. :(

Yep. But it prepares you for conference play.

A lot of this is not enough d- line depth. It is a weakness and that should not be a surprise to anyone. Having Givens out is really bad. But the kids are going to have to grow up quick or it will be a long big ten season.

Still, they won't see a lot of qbs who can throw like that this year.

We will see two QBs who can throw better than App State (Haskins and Lewerke) and one who won't be pressured into doing so (Hornibrook). Then there's that pesky game at Ann Arbor. Anyway you slice it, the prognosis is not good.

Yep, the biggest takeaway is lack of pass rush. You don't get into the backfield, it'll always come back to haunt you w/a QB who has a pulse

The pass rush isn't there, no doubt. You also had Tarburton and Joseph out there instead of a Buchholz and Simmons...at least one is coming back. Givens will also need to really come back hard. The depth is going to be a work in progress with some very young guys and it will take some time. Shelton, Mustipher, and Jordan all still need reps. I've grown tired of reading Shareef Miller's tweets about his play and practice on social media....it flashes from time to time but is not consistent at all.

That being said the one that that this defense can correct is they can line up correctly and know their GD assignments. 3rd year guys constantly out of position....well we could let the frosh do that just as easy as they have more physical ability. Older CB's not getting depth in a zone with the lead....some pretty basic stuff. I don't know how many times PSU didn't have a man over a hat or were late getting someone there or flat out just missed their assignments. That is the biggest thing that needs to be corrected in OOC play, it was mind boggling how bad that part was. You can deal with the young guys doing it, but not RS sophs and up....no way. It was blatantly clear the leadership on D is lacking for it to happen that many times.
