According to Mineo, two-time PA AA State Champ Aaron Seidel has committed to Virginia Tech. With two years left, it seems a bit early for a PA stud to go all in for a school like VT. Anyone have any insight into this? Could have been the stud 125 we've been looking for.....97-1 and #1 in the US at 113lbs.

We have the stud we've been looking for coming next year in Lilledahl.

Perhaps not intended, but this comes across poorly.

Duke, Perry, and Cunningham didn't commit too early, so Seidel didn't either.

"A school like VT" -- that's a very good program, and regardless let's not look down on other programs. At least not until they sign Ferraris.

If my intel is correct, Seidel may be a Bobby Weaver kind of prospect. He's an older rising junior that may not get big enough for D1 125. We shall see.

He's from my home county and is only the second champ and is the first 2x champ from Lebanon County. I wish him him well, but, as I said, we shall see how his college career works out.

Given that he wrestled at 57kg/125lb this summer, I'd bet that he ends up at 133/141. Good timing for us with BB having this year and next, and Nagao having 2024, 2025 and 2026.

Even this undersells it. One of the best, most consistent programs in the country.

I meant no disrespect to VT, however, don't act like they routinely pull 4-time PA champs (like Seidel should be). I'm concerned about our 125 hole for the past decade, not VT's feelings.
FYI- their past four team placements at NCAA's: 9th, 8th, 15th, 11th.

Still recovering from that 1 win season under Tom Brands.

Rutgers, for one, would consider that a stellar performance. Just sayin'. ;)

Long time season tix holder at PSU and VT. I’m always happy to see VT land high potential recruits ….. as long PSU has the weight covered. VT is an exciting program especially when they wrestle in their little (approx 1,200) theater. VT is no Penn State, but, they would give Iowa and Wisc a good go. 4th or 5th at NCAA’s is a good upside for VT this year.

Seidel is an excellent wrestler who has the "can he get big enough?" syndrome that plagues some kids. Would have loved to get him.

I imagine Seidel was a kid Cael is monitoring but probably waiting and seeing his needs before going all in (how big does Lilledahl get, does Seidel ever get bigger) Nothing stopping Cael from pressing later, not saying he can be a guaranteed flip at all but it could be an option if needed.

Also consider that VT is an excellent program and likely offered something close to a full ride early and not hard to see why the kid is excited at that prospect.

Likewise don't act as though there are so many PA 4x champs that any school routinely lands them.

Or that there's anything special on a national college level about being a PA 4x champ. It doesn't make Seidel a better prospect than Lilledahl or Knox, among others.

If anything PA 4 time champs haven't fared well in college.
Yes, at least for the past couple decades. Jeremy Hunter was the last 4 timer to win a national championship and that was over 20 years ago. What's really crazy is the lack of even getting AA over that span. Only one of the past 4 (Marsteller) attained AA. That's a real head scratcher to me.

Prior to that there was more success in college although still not a sure thing.

Man, if you look at Thomas Haines' team picture from LHU, you see the eyes of a guy who is done wrestling, and has been done for a while.

I coached Aaron in baseball. He's a great kid and an awesome wrestler. His Dad is a bit on the small side, so, my only concern would be whether he can put on the weight.

Tomasello is (generously) listed at 5' 0" even and got up to 133.

This isn't the 1970s. Guys can build to 125 if they are willing to dedicate themselves to a strength program. It might not be in Year 1, but they will make it if they really want to.

Especially when they can wrestle at whatever weight they want (translated: not cut) during a shirt year. Use that year to gain mass/strength.

In Seidel's case: Ventresca and Flynn are both at 125 and both eligible thru 2026. He has time to build up.

So Kurt McHenry should be a contender this year then?

Weird thing, I was looking at the FLO results for Super 32 and it lists Seidel's hometown as Schaefferstown. That would be within the ELCO school district, not Northern Lebanon. He wrestles for Northern Lebanon.

Yes, Seidel is actually an ELCO kid. However, he transferred very early in his wrestling career. I believe he has been at NL since 7th grade.

This happens way more then people think at public schools. Take Nazareth for example. Their two best wrestlers are not really from Nazareth.

I knew he was originally at ELCO. Schaefferstown to NL is basically across the entire county. That's quite a hike every day - almost a half hour each way. I used to bicycle on those roads.

How do you transfer? I would imagine you need to pay something right? And it can't be for "sporting reasons" if I'm not mistaken. So how?

You have to have an address in the district. I don't think you have to pay, though (I could be wrong about that). When Kerry Collins transferred to Wilson in the 1990s, he lived with his aunt and uncle and QB'd Wilson to the 4A state finals. The rules at the time were that he didn't have to sit out for transferring for athletics as long as both principals signed off on it.

The rules changed in 2007 so that you have to sit out a year if the transfer was for "athletic reasons" regardless. When Wyomissing won the state 2A football title in 2012, their QB Corey Unger transferred from Fleetwood when his dad rented an apartment in Wyomissing the previous December. They claimed they moved for academic reasons, but Fleetwood contested that it was for athletic reasons since he held every Fleetwood passing record at the time but the team won 2 games in 3 years while Wyomissing was a state contender that was forced to use an all-county WR at QB after their 2011 starter graduated. The BCIAA ruled in favor of Fleetwood and Unger was forced to sit out until Dec 1 (one year from the move date), which coincided with the 2012 state QF game, so he was only allowed to play for Wyomissing for three games, the state QF, SF, and Final, all of which he won.

This was a very contentious case because Wyomissing at the time was vastly superior to Fleetwood in both academics and athletics, so a transfer for academics wouldn't have looked unusual at all for anyone who wasn't also a record setting QB stuck on a last place team transferring to a state champion caliber program (featuring current Lions LB Alex Anzalone) lacking only a QB.
