NFL Draft thread....

May as well get it started.

I'm guessing on the positions for the first 4 picks for the Steelers (4 in rounds 1-3).

- OT (I'd love to see Olu in Black and Gold) but he's a L-OT and Steelers seem to be looking for a R-OT...
- C
- WR
- CB

Also believe the Steelers have a 50-50 chance of trading up (somewhat) or down (moreso) in the first round and possibly going for a Center instead of an OT. The Steelers new GM is a wheeler-dealer.

** Not just a Steelers thread, but we'll all likely respond towards our "home" teams.......

Mitchell Messenbrink's Maturity

Now that the OTT’s are over, I would like to see if anyone sensed the same thing that I thought that I watched, and that was a sudden maturity of Mitchell Messenbrink. Even though he lost to Jordan Burroughs, he did score a couple points against JB, but there were some things that I saw from MM, beginning with his smile prior to the hand shake at the beginning of the match that I found interesting, and that was his confidence at the start of the match. The MM bounce. Beginning with the first period I saw how MM squared himself to JB on the mat, and I think it made JB uncomfortable. As the 1st period progressed, MM showed some inexperience and allowed a take down and a back exposure. On the restart MM went straight back to the middle of the mat. At this point, JB was not sure of this upstart kid, but I think he knew he was in a match that he was not ready for. Head slapping ensued on the next start, and the official stopped it, and MM wanted to make sure that he was on the up and up by attempting a high 5 to JB to let him know that is competition, nothing more. But if I recall JB did not respond. This is only 30 seconds into the first period. In my opinion, MM was more prepared for this match than JB. As the 1st period progressed, JB’s experience showed. But watching MM continue to square up against JB, I was impressed even more with MM and his preparation for a wrestler like JB. Down 7-0 after 2, MM continued to square up against JB and attempted leg attacks. Even with under 1 minute to go MM continued his attacks, and JB was not sure, at times, how to defend MM’s attacks. With time winding down, there was some head butting and head pushing initiated by MM to let JB know that MM is coming at the decorated wrestler, and whatever the outcome, JB now knows who MM is. The shove with :07 left in the match is important. Sometimes a torch is passed, but a lot people of don’t see it or understand it. I like to think that I just saw a torch passed from a decorated champion to a young Penn State wrester who I think is going to shine in the NCAA’s as well as the world stage. I like to think that, in this particular match, I watched Mithell Messenbrink progress to the next level of the great Penn State type of wresters like David Taylor, Jason Nolf and Zain Retherford. Penn State Nation get ready to cheer on the next of Penn State’s incredible person/wrestler. This is just my observation.

Askren's Trials Controversies

I thought Askren had some good thoughts on the two major controversies from this weekend.

1) MM-Burroughs - Askren essentially says that's who MM is, he loves to fight, he straddles the line, the head shove was well deserved, and that he's had to choke MM in practice many times to get him back in line. Overall, pretty funny discussion from one of the last people that could be accused of anti-MM bias.

Also interesting discussion about when MM started training with him and how one of the big issues he had was keeping his composure. Ben used to purposely try to get him mad so he could learn to control himself. Reminded me a lot of the process with
Desanto in the Iowa room.

2) The PSU fans - I agree with him on this too. When a crowd gets large, it doesn't behave rationally. It gets swept up in the emotions of the event and sometimes does things that nobody would ever think they'd do outside of that context. I don't think it's an accident that the two notoriously poorly behaved fan bases are Iowa and PSU, the two largest by far. Get everybody together and people get wild and those in the crowd who actually suck become more emboldened to misbehave.

'79 Sugar Bowl

To spice up the board a little I figured I would try to get a discussion going about this game. Kind of a downer I know as it brings back bad memories to those who were of age to remember.

For me personally I didn't watch the game. My family took a vacation to Southern California that year and we went to the Rose Bowl game. I was 12. By the way, that Rose Bowl game was USC vs Michigan with the infamous Charles White leap for a TD that was not a TD. Hilarious that Michigan got hosed on that call. Schmuckbechler would have found a way to blow the game even if they didn't give USC the TD on that play.

Back to the Sugar Bowl.

Anybody on this board go to the game?? What was the atmosphere like? I bet it was mostly a Bama crowd but I think Penn State brought a lot of fans. This game had to have been very exciting to attend as a PSU fan. The vibe in the PSU fan section had to be electric! It was Joe's first opportunity at a clear cut national championship.

The run started in '77 with the only blemish being the Kentucky loss and closing that season with an epic win vs Pitt in the snow and crushing Arizona State in the Fiesta Bowl.

In '78 we were great and I attended all of the home games including our thrashing of Maryland and then beating Pitt. I love to this day Joe's decision to go for it on 4th and goal at the 3 and Guman walks in with the pitch. One of the iconic PSU plays for sure. I also was in Ohio Stadium to watch us dominate OSU 19-0.

So now we are pitted vs Bear Bryant and Alabama. We lost to them 3 years earlier in the first game ever in the Superdome.

Our defense was stout. Millen and Clark were great and we also had Lance Mehl, Joe Lally and Larry Kubin who were all very good. I think Pete Harris got a huge pick in this game. The teams were evenly matched.

I recently watched our TD and Fitzkee makes an unbelievable catch in the back of the endzone. Incredible balance and footwork to get his foot down. Better catch than Garrity's in the '83 Sugar Bowl, in my opinion.

On the goal line stand....Ugh! Why did we run it 4 straight times?! I think we ran it 4 straight, right? What were we thinking on the 4th down play?? I have read that Joe wanted to pass but he got talked out of it?? I think that was in one of the books about him.

What should we have done?? We must have had a play to simply slip the TE out?? It would have been Mickey Shuler, right? Or we could have faked Suhey up the middle and run Guman wide. There were other options as well. Bama totally sold out on the dive play. It's like they knew that was the play we called! Man, I think how sweet it would have been to have won that game! Joe never beat Bear Bryant unfortunately.

I have read that Joe admitted in one of the books about him that he seriously contemplated retirement after this game since it was such a devastating loss. Thankfully he did not.

Interested in the board's thoughts on this game from all perspectives and from anyone who attended.

Draft coverage

What is with the idiocy of showing people here at the draft and at games who look more like clowns than fans? I just don’t understand how a normal human being could embarrass themselves like that. I used to wonder about our “Big Uglies” until I read the article about them in BWI. I can’t believe these other people making asses and complete fools of themselves. Are they that desperate for attention?

Great draft points up failures of our 2023 offense

So Olu the #11 overall pick...Wallace high 3rd round...I'm thinking Nourzad in either the 4th or 5th round. If I'm right about Nourzad, that would make three NFL-caliber players, one of them a potential future all-pro, on our 2023 OL.

Good news for those guys and the Penn State brand, but it's even harder now to see last year's frustrations on O, to include the often sputtering run game (despite the talent in the backfield), as anything other than the result of a flawed offensive system and underachievement on the part of the coaches. Hopefully the change in offensive coordinators will successfully address those issues, but Yurcich arrived amid similarly high hopes.

Sorry, don't mean to rain on the parade of what's shaping up to be a great draft for Penn State players. I'm glad so many of them will get a shot at the next level.

OT: Professional Bull Riding

Our son lives in Louisville and right now he's attending a professional bull riding event at the Yum Center, where UL plays their BB games.

So I texted him and asked him who was winning, the bulls or the riders. He replys, mostly the bulls as only one rider made it to 8 seconds. The bulls are massive.

Funny that we went to dinner with old friends last Saturday and they were telling us about their oldest son that went to Spain a couple years ago to run with the bulls. He told them that he trained to try and get in shape to be able to stay ahead of the bulls and that he was advised to take the inside at the turns in the narrow streets as the bulls slide on their hoofs to the outside and many time hit the walls at the turns (sometimes squishing people) as their hoofs don't have traction on the cobblestone streets.

How crazy would a person have to be to try that. Our friend's son did get some wounds on his back from getting slightly gored, but no stitches. He was lucky.

Any of yinz buying the Texas A&M/B1G rumors?

At first glance, I guess it makes sense for both sides. A&M feels disrespected after Texas got invited to the SEC, and joining the B1G would open up the Texas market for the conference. They’re also an AAU member, so they have that going for them.

At the same time, they’re a much better cultural fit in the SEC (do you really want those pep dudes coming to Happy Valley?) and have several old SWC/Big 12 rivals now on their schedule again. Would they really be willing to leave that to play Illinois, Indiana, and Rutgers?

If that happens, I’d imagine the SEC would be all-in on landing Clemson, Florida State, and North Carolina. Maybe the Big Ten invites Miami to get to an even 20 members?
