I think we have coddled kids way too much recently. I don't give a **** what you do if you are 18 then you are an adult, and you have a responsibility to know the rules and follow the rules. Stating that 18 year olds are dumb and need guidance is not relevant that's obvious. However, it does not excuse behaviors that are stupid or dumb that's how you learn. Unfortunately some mistakes kill you and some don't either way a lesson needs to be learned

It sucks how they got caught, however, they did indeed get caught breaking the rules that they were made aware of. The reason why gambling infractions are taken so seriously is that it gets to the integrity of sporting events. The University of Iowa turned them in.
There isn't really a need to adapt to how it is today. There are a few guides to being successful in life, no matter the time that are timeless. Things like accountable for your actions, being on time, doing what you are told, etc.
To echo another poster, I too am glad that I did not grow up in a time where every stupid thing I did was recorded and broadcast to the world. But that has nothing to do with you are not allowed to place bets on sporting events involving your own university.
Now only if the NCAA did something about a program knowingly, willingly breaks rules and winning a national championship as a result or consistently applied its rules.
So when football players have been punished by missing the first couple meaningless non conference games all these years, they really should have been held out of title and bowl games?
Yes, if the “punishment “ is to actually be a real consequence for their behavior.
Edit: Football is a bad comparison as athletes are now skipping bowls. Bowl games, for the most part, are not analogous to NCAA championships

How about when you were 24 and were entering your 6th year of service? Did you get the same slack as an 18-year-old E1, or were you expected to have grown up by them? How many of the gambling offenders in these cases were 18-year-old freshmen? Hint: it is the same number of times that Bo Nickal lost to Iowa.
Their careers were not ended. They lost 1 year of eligibility. If they happened to be seniors, tough. But the punishment was not ending their careers, it was 1 year lost.

If the IRS finds out from the NSA who decides to surveillance me, that I overstated my deductions due to an email etc. then that information was obtained illlegally. All of you who are maintaining the NCAA should continue to have this unchecked authority blow my mind. But we are all allowed to disagree and that’s fine.

I’ll take a stab at this.
I don’t have all the facts but I’ve consumed much of what has been published and have a good knowledge base in general on gambling and gambling as it relates to college athletes .
Meaning I do not think it’s as simple as they broke the rules therefore ban the athlete forever. And clearly the ncaa didn’t either as they modified the punishment mid stream . One reason people protest is to modify existing rules not to absolve the rule breakers themselves.
I believe the betting that was done was harmless , no point fixing , no inside knowledge was used to change the results of a game etc.. etc.. However I do remember one punter or player who I think bet on the under in a game he played, that would have harsher penalties in my mind than my answer below.
1. Two match suspension for wrestlers.
2. Community service with a gear towards gambling, whether it’s working a hotline or helping gambling addicts in some capacity
3. Participate in the schools gambling presentations to all athletes
I might also add that I’d prevent the athlete from making posts like you see above from Brands were the athlete does not assume 100 percent responsibilities for his/her actions.
I’ll spare you my personal opinions on the NCAA , NCAA rules as they relate to gambling, and I’ll spare you the overall countless statistics on how many college athletes gamble. I’ll just say for me when I put it all in context 1 year is too large a penalty.

Sure people in their 20's are idiots. The only thing they are good for is looking better than people in their 30's and 40's. If i had my way they would all just strike a pose and shut the hell up. It doesn't get them off the hook for their actions.

What a slacker. At that age, Bo Jordan had a wife, a house, and 2 kids. He did well with the hand he was dealt.
I feel far worse for the seniors who lost their opportunity to compete in the 2020 NCAA tournament due to COVID when every other college wrestler got a free year out of it. Those boys did nothing wrong.
Only surgery I've had is a meniscus scope for my knee. Vasectomy is next followed by Carpal tunnel on my wrists and new boobs for the wife..
