Einstein's definition of insanity, but here are some stats that don't lie.

1st half - Barkley had 1 1st down run for negative yards and McSorley had 3 (read option plays).
2nd half - Barkley had 5 1st down runs for negative yards (and 3 runs on other downs for negative yards) and McSorley had none (read option plays).

So there were twice as many negative yardage read option plays in the 2nd half, when it sure seemed like PSU went away from it's normal aggressiveness on O and seemed to be protecting a lead. rather than playing to increase it.

Don't start with the hater stuff, because I'm not. I'm also not a football coach, nor do I even pretend to be one on TV. I am a fan that is extremely disappointed in the offensive 2nd half play calling, especially with the painful benefit of last season's Rose Bowl experience all too fresh in my mind.

Even when it was 38-27, or even 38-33, one or 2 more first downs would have made it practically impossible, time-wise, for OSU to come back. Let that sink in. One or 2 measly 1st downs.

The D was clearly gassed in the 4th, and losing Bucholz was huge, but in part they were that gassed from spending a lot of time on the field as the O went into a shell.

That being said, I still think this has the potential to end up being a fantastic season, with almost certainly a NY6 bowl pending; perhaps even the CFP if we get a lot of help.

That being said, don't underestimate how close this team was to basically assuring itself a seat at the CFP table, with a chance at the NC. Chances like that don't come around all that often (unless you're Bama) and that miss is incredibly painful.

You haven't complained enough about the coaches in the past 24 hours? Is the idea that the more negative-ass threads you start, the better the coaches will get? Is that how it works?

Summary of Penn State possessions against OSU. We had a lot of success when we a) had Trace (and to a lesser extent Barkley) run *designed* runs, and b) when Trace had time to throw via designed pass plays. Gesicki won a lot more than he lost on Saturday - he should have been our 'go to' on nearly every play. He was targeted five times in the first half (including a 14 yard catch that was negated by penalty) and averaged 8 YPC. He was only targeted four times in the second half - two incomplete, and the other two for seven and 22 yards respectively.

Also - even when you include Barkley's 36 yard TD run, and TM's six yard TD run, we averaged 2.3 yards on 1st down when running the ball (which we did 19 times, or 76% of the time on first down). Take out those two plays and we averaged less than a yard per running play on first down, and had 9/17 go for 0 or negative yards.

Passing on first down was just as bad - of our six attempts, three were incomplete, one was for no gain, and the two that did connect did so for five and 21 yards respectively.

Even in this modern age of fancy coffee and men with feelings, football is still about blocking and tackling. They were better at it.
