What is our feelings on coach Fry

watching BTN about 85 season.
I always thought a good guy. Interested in the boards thoughts?

I always liked Fry. Never felt like he had Paternos number, but an old school likable guy

I remember some blue hairs later saying Iowa's players took bribes to fumble that Rose Bowl game.

Had Barry Alverez on staff too.
And Alvarez took a few key Iowa coaches with him to Wisconsin.........said he could have taken more, but out of respect for Fry that he did not.....Alvarez was at Notre Dame when he went to Wisconsin, but was still well connected at Iowa.......I think this was the beginning of the end for Fry's career.

I always liked Hayden. Maybe better at recognizing coaching talent than even as an X's and O's coach. His coaching tree is fantastic: Bob Stoops, Barry Alvarez, Kirk Ferentz, Brett Bielema, Dan McCarney, and Bill Snyder to name a few. Many were on staff at the same time in the early 80s.

I liked what he did at Iowa. Proved that any team with a pulse could compete in what at the time was a greatly overrated mediocre Big Ten conference.

IMO he was a great coach. There are very few coaches in modern history who have taken over downtrodden programs and turned them into consistently good top 20, or better programs. The only three I can think of off hand are Fry, Shellenberger and Alvarez.

Back in the 70s there was a huge football coaches clinic in Atlantic City. Conventions were the life's blood of AC in the winters before casinos. I played a slot machine standing next to Fry at Resorts International (so long ago that we actually put coins in the machine). Nice fellow....neither one of us had any luck.

Fry to Ferentz has worked out well for them. Basically they are what they are. Always tough to beat and well coached. Sometimes they surprise and look like a title contender.
