2018 PSU WSOC Thread

For the 24th straight year, PSU WSOC was selected to participate in the NCAA tournament. They will host Bowling Green on Friday (11/9), at 6 pm, at Jeffrey Field.

The winner of PSU's game will advance to face the winner of the UNC Greensboro - South Carolina match. South Carolina is the #3 seed in the bracket, so they will be favored to win the match.

The four 1 seeds in the NCAAs are Stanford, Florida St., UNC, and Georgetown. The NCAA only seeds 4 in each bracket, and no B1G team earned a seed. The B1G teams that made the tournament, besides PSU, were:

Wisconsin, Ohio State, Northwestern, Minnesota, and Rutgers

Wonder if PSU beat Minny if they would have been seeded? Anyways, BGSU is a home match and they are decent, but PSU should handle them after that looks like road matches.

It will be a tall order to get out of the bracket. We will likely have to beat South Carolina, West Virginia and Florida State in consecutive games.

R1 of NCAAs, PSU got out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st half, but Bowling Green knocked one in before the end of the 1st half. Score was 2-1, PSU, at the half.

PSU scored a 3rd goal around the 65 min mark, to make it 3-1, PSU. PSU just scored on a PK to make it 4-1, PSU, around the 70 min mark.

South Carolina defeated UNC Greensboro, 3-1. As such, PSU will face the #3 seed in their bracket, South Carolina, on 11/16 (next Friday), at a place and time TBA.

The PSU women didn't seem to worry too much about my calling South Carolina favored in the match. Earlier today:


Kristen Schnurr entered as a sub for PSU at the 27 minute mark, and scored the game's only goal for PSU at the 31 minute mark.

PSU advances to play the winner the #2 seed WVU vs. Wake Forest match (which takes place later today) on Sunday, at WVU.

Penn State controlled the ball and the tempo from the beginning. South Carolina struggled just to put a string of passes together. I haven't looked at the stats yet, but the difference in shots, shots on frame and time of possession must be enormous.

Hard to believe South Carolina was the higher seed; PSU completely controlled the game.

Kudos to WVU for the webcast. The stream was excellent and the broadcast team was polished and informed.

Florida State beat USC on PK's , so the winner of the match will go on the road to play the Seminoles.

PSU advances to the Elite Eight for the fourth time in the last five years. They controlled the game today from start to finish. Florida State is the one seed in the region and is ranked #2 overall but, as good as PSU plays defense, they can beat anyone.

halftime at the NCAA quarterfinal between PSU and FSU.

PSU had the best goal scoring opportunity of the half, but it just got tipped wide by FSU GK.

FSU has a lot of speed, which they try to use on counter plays.

1st half favored PSU, but the match could go either way.

The Lady Lions are playing well and have had some good scoring chances. If they keep it up, they have a reasonable chance of winning and advancing to the College Cup.

PSU looked good to start the 2nd half, but FSU started buzzing, and caused two corners in the 1st 10 minutes. PSU's GK had to make one really nice save on a long shot. Still scoreless with 38 min left to go.

Florida State scores and takes a 1-0 lead with 37 minutes to play.

And FSU gets on the board 1st, with 37:39 left. PSUers D got a little passive with the ball in their penalty area, and FSU's Venezuelan snipper rocketed a shot from outside the 18 into the top corner of the goal.

PSU not taking advantage of their dominance, and excellent opportunities in the 1st half may come back to bite them in the match.

14 minutes left, and PSU really is having a tough time maintaining possession, and thus generating goal scoring opportunities. FSU with a corner, but PSU's D clears it. FSU got the ball back into the penalty area, and nearly came up with a goal.

PSU finally gets a centering ball/shot with about 10 minutes left, but the FSU GK handles that.

PSU with a corner kick at the 8:50 mark. PSU is taken down just outside the top of the penalty area, and will have a FK. Nice curving shot around the wall, but it's just wide of the net.

PSU dominated the 1st half, and didn't score. FSU dominated the 2nd half, and got a goal.
