1982 #2 Nebraska vs. #7 PSU! I was there! Were you? I was part of the throng

I grabbed blue and white grass from the end zone. My best friend who was an agronomy major and his girl friend who was a horticulture major were appalled and said, "You're going to make tuition go up!"

I lost my voice in the first quarter.

that came onto the field and tore down the goal post.

We then proceeded to carry that sucker through the tunnel then across campus and wrapped that thing around one of the pillars of Old Main!

Was anybody else there helping me??

Great! Great! Times!!

never left my seat but I was there.
The short version of my story is, I was sitting in front of players parents. When Bowman scored I jumped up a jacked McClosky(sp) mom with my elbo and knocked her flat. Not pretty.
Funny part is that I met McClosky years later( after Michigan game, 95 I believe) with his wife and other x players and told him the story and he remembers his mom telling him the story.
There are a lot of good stories associated with this story but that's why I didn't rush the field.

I was at JFK Stadium that same day seeing The WHO, Santana, The Clash and the Hooters. However, I did teach McCloskey's kids in grade school. Great family!

Best game I ever attended. The atmosphere was surreal with the portable lighting. By the way game should have been a blowout. Missed 3 field goals and had 2 touchdowns called back, Nebraska was lucky to be in that game. Penn State was the much better team that day. It should never had been close.

So which band was your favorite. The Who had to be the headliners, but the other bands weren't any slouches.

Santana is in a league by himself and the Clash had plenty of hits.....but if I'm not mistaken this video was filmed at the Exton Drive-in

I was there
Senior in high school
Went with friend and his dad and uncle

Big mistake I made was wearing my HS football jersey with my name on it-our high school colors were RED AND WHITE
Got some interesting comments

We ran on the field after the game from pretty high up in the West stands

I'll never forget that game - it's probably what hooked me on Penn State

I was there, best game I ever attended. The feeling at the end was incredible..everyone just stood in the stadium...no one left for what seemed like 10 minutes...everyone just standing and taking in the moment...what a great memory!

I was there glove. Jumped on the north end goal post and rode it out of the stadium. Best time of my life. Got off at the stadium but I think some people kept carrying parts of it all the way into town.

I was there! Sat in section WB. My parents had season tickets for 30+ years. That was the best game I ever saw in Beaver Stadium.

The following week, we flew to Alabama to watch us play the Crimson Tide. We lost 41-21. If you recall, a Penn State player backed into his own punter, essentially blocking our own punt. We had seats near the field and that play was right in front of us. We still went on to win the national championship that year, which I was also at.

The best game I ever saw in person was the 1987 Fiesta Bowl, but the Nebraska game was a close second. Great memories!

I was sitting in junior student section around 30 yard line on east side and ran onto field to hug my friend, #54 Dick Maginnis, and help bring down the goal post and carry it to Old Main!

Thanks for helping me and about 40 others carry that sucker!

And to think, we could have been standing right next to each other!!

Yes Ritchie we did. Wrapped that darn thing around one of the pillars of Old Main we did.

I think the Collegian had a picture of it in the paper the next day!

Good times!

Glov, do you remember tearing down the goal posts for a lot of the games that year? I remember an article in the collegian emploring the students not to do it anymore because of the cost to replace them.

Fast forward to the sugar bowl. Towards the end of the game we started chanting "goal posts" and the NOPD deployed cops with riot gear and dogs. One drunk bastard ran out and got the business end of a night stick. Whack.

Yes Ned I do. Big movement to make them stay in the ground permanently that year. Did not somebody get hurt badly doing just what we did later that year??

Was there... In the field... And helping with the goalpost along with a few of my fraternity brothers... Epic game and atmosphere.

However... Joe was a little pissed afterwards... As was the University...

One of the top, all time games at Beaver Stadium. At the time, I was a student at Juniata College, and a huge Penn State fan, my Dad a PSU Grad. Dad always took my Mom, who was handicapped, and a couple friends or relatives to the games. I was fortunate that he would get me tickets for the games back then as well. Anyways, right before going into the game, I told my parents that if the game was close, they should stay to the end. They always left games with about 5 minutes left to get my Mom, with her disability, out to the car as to miss getting caught in the crowd. For some reason, they took my advice and ended up staying for the finish. They were always so happy I had encouraged them to do so. Funny that was the time I ever told them to do that, and I think the only game they stayed till the end in 50 years of attending.

Now my seats back then were always against the rail on row 40EE, first row off the walkway. So, it was easy to jump over the rail to get in and out of our seats. Me and my college buddy stayed to the very end , saw the students storm the field and bring the goal posts down. Nobody left the stands. It was euphoric!! Soon after, we decided we needed a beer, and quickly jumped the rail, hustled down the ramp, and got to my truck within minutes. I shot through the parking lot and driving through the crowd, was able to make my way downtown in decent time. To our amazement, when we got onto College Avenue coming through town, we were the only car on the street. We had beaten everyone out of the lots. Of course I was crazy back then, so we were pumping our fists, waving our jerseys, honkin the horn, and crankin the tunes all in celebration. Probably chugging some brews as well. Ha. Just havin fun!

As I'm driving, all of a sudden we see this wall of students coming down College right at us. Holy shit, I remember thinking, I didn't know what to do. Being in the middle of the block, down from Old Main, there was no where to turn. I mean it was like hundreds or thousands of students coming right at us, and we were the only vehicle on the street. Then, I realized they were escorting a piece of the goal post right down College. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was nuts!!, As I had nothing else to do, I kept driving slowly forward not knowing what to expect. All of a sudden, the students just opened up a path for us to go right down the middle. And through a sea of students, we crept through the crowd, high fiving all the way. My truck was getting pounded on, rocked and whatever, but who cared, it was so cool as we were all celebrating one of the best PSU wins and finishes ever.

After we finally got through the gauntlet, I swear at least a block long, my buddy and I just looked at each other and busted out laughing. Our hands actually even hurt from doing so many high fives!, It was the craziest and greatest celebration!! I'll never forget it.

Sorry to be so long winded, but it's just one of my best all-time memories of being a PSU fan!!!!

I'm another one of the Blue Band members who was there (trumpet]. It may have been that year that they started having the band go back on the field after the game to somewhat deter fans from going on the field.

Rumor has it that a section of that goal post was taken to Hammond Building and cut into sections using a saw in one of the labs.

North end zone with my late father and ex-wife's uncle. It was the uncle's first and only PSU game and man, what a game to see. It was hard to see down the end of the field where all the final action happened with no big replay boards, but I remember the explosion of sound when Bowman scored.

Still the best game I ever saw live. Have some grass from the end zone and a chip of paint from the goal post somewhere. Good times. Dang.

Hey T -

I think we had a pledge on the bar before it came down. I remember some not happy about that:)

Pi Kappa Phi... 409 East Fairmount...Though I heard we recently lost our Chapter for disciplinary reasons for the next 3 years...Something about serving beer at Rush Party's... Crazy... Serving beer at the Fraternity... Who would have thought?

Early memories of course living in West Halls ( Hamilton) across from Skeeter Nichols... Jonathan Williams... Bill Dugan ( that was a crazy dude... Went on to play for the Seahawks) , Brian Franco ( 5 field goals against Nebraska in Lincoln and eventually became my roommate) , a few others.

That Nebraska game though was easily in my top three along with beating Miami in Fiesta of course and years later Ohio State in State College.

I did join the group carrying the post to Old Main... Crazy thing is... I'm not sure that was the plan... Crowd just sort of celebrated.

Again though... Joe was pissed the next day... Made some comments about students being civilized...

And that's when they started getting more strict about fans and game conduct... Rushing the field etc.

Last note... The Fraternity Tailgates back then really were legendary... Pledges of course would arrive early... Pick the location... Set up flag etc.

Certainly not the restrictions you have today ... Times have changed obviously.

100%... Funny !

Of course at the time...we were young...celebrating... Certainly many "beverages" had been consumed... Great times that I may OR may not tell my kids some day.

They see me as this guy who puts on a suit everyday and heads off for my daily commute to NYC... Oh boy the stories... Yikes !

I was there - Senior section. I think they still had the wooden bleachers then because I remember us jumping on them all game and finally breaking the bench. A guy in our dorm brought a hack saw down to where they dropped the goal posts and cut us all a piece of it - still have that thing - good times.
