What positives have come out of the quarantine for you?

You know, that’s a great idea for a project I need to take on right now... teaching Venmo to my mom.

She’s in her 70s and has COPD... given those risk factors, my sisters and I have been handling all her shopping and other errands. But she almost always reimburses me with a check.

Moms! Not much has changed for me, but My mother tested negative for Covid-19 so that is a great plus. Just hoping that they can solve her other medical issues.

Obviously this has been a global disaster, but I'm trying to look on the bright side.

  • I've saved 1.5 hours a day on commute, so less wear and tear on the car, savings on gas and maintenance, and more time to do other things
  • Painted multiple rooms in our house
  • Finally finished my basement - bought the new TV, set up a couple curio cabinets and loaded them up with all my sports memorabilia that's been packed away in storage for years.
  • Built a 25X100 fenced dog run for our 4 maniacs.
  • Got to do a ton of cooking. I really enjoy it and I had the time to try a lot of new things.
  • Bought and a stocked a full liquor cabinet
  • Replaced all our outdoor lighting (though my wife says she now feels like the Griswolds when she flips them on)
  • Spent a lot of time with my son (am I bad father because we watched all 5 Jurassic Park movies in 3 days...and he's 7 - he insisted on watching them, no bad dreams or anything afterwards).
I don't mean to belittle the suffering many are experiencing. I recognize how incredibly fortunate I am that employment has not been an issue and allowed me to do all of those things and enjoy them. Just trying to share a little positivity.
I’m totally with you. It’s a real disaster for people unemployed, people with school age children, people having to work from home day after day, etc.; but it’s ok for my wife and myself because we’re both retired and not effected financially.

Before the virus, we were regular casino players; Vegas every 4-5 months and we also attended several local casinos 2-3 times per week. We really miss this, it was our entertainment.

We also used to go out to eat every Friday and Saturday. Again, we miss this; but are now saving money because of these restrictions. Fortunately, I’m at the point in my life, where saving money is nice; but it’s not the focus anymore, like it was years ago. So I’d certainly rather go back to normal, and spend more money in the process.

I’ve also realized that my wife is about the only person that I could coexist with, day after day after day. Instead of going to the gym every day, we’ve created a routine together to get some exercise. Some walking, some weights, and some yoga. It’s ok, and not as good as the gym, but it’s better than nothing.

Not really anything...the experience has totally sucked...but feel both guilty and blessed that we have not been impacted as negatively as some (yet!) that have lost lives or livelihoods or both! Soldiering on and trying to make tbe best of things. Take nothing for granted and pray more daily.

Ditched the long commute and sleeping in two more hours every weekday. Associated commuting costs besides gas and bus/train fare, I'm eating out a lot less for lunch and saving $. Been using an app every day the past two months and learning German.

Sehr güt!

I'm only on Facebook now ,Cakes from the Lake. I am at Harvey's Lake Pa. I can only ship to a few states right now because it's hot . thank you for the support!
Great site. I encourage all in pa to support you. Guessing you don’t deliver to Texas yet? The Irish Car bomb with Guinness chocolate and Jameson butterscotch? Come on. That sounds soooo great. When travel opens and I head up there to visit my parents, you are on the list. Good luck

You are so talented!! I'm salivating just thinking of a slice of the Maple Bacon or Fruity Pebbles.

I bake and sell cheesecakes to restaurants. Well that slowed to crawl after 3/17. The first week I remodeled my kitchen. The second week I got to work developing and sugar free gluten free cheesecake. After 9 cakes, I figured it out. Since then I have sold over 900 slices to a local market. I'm not making money, but at least I'm not going into debt. I also shipped a few cakes which went well and figured how to use Venmo.
Stay well my friends!

Most of us have no idea how much goes into making a cheesecake. Awesome that you are able to pursue your passion!

Best wishes on continued growth and success!

Good thread OP. Like you, I've been mindful that there has been a lot of pain and suffering across the world, and even this board community. So while I was shutdown for 7 weeks and had to help my oldest daughter through the final disappointment of her senior year, I have fought to seize upon the positives.
Financially, I was blessed to keep my employees whole and also myself. And, without chasing my daughters softball team around the state and eating out so much, actually saved money.
Like most of you, I caught up almost every household chore/item I had let slide except cleaning out the attic.
I have cooked and grilled and taught my kids how to do a lot of the same.
I was able to convince my mother (COPD) to go to the cabin at the pond and stay. We live in a small town, but any extra steps couldn't hurt. And I was able to go up and sit at one end of the long porch on a swing and her at the other and have some wonderful conversations with her.
But the biggest blessing I had was just spending time with my daughters. One is a sophomore and one is a senior. They are so close to being grown and going into the world on their own. It is time that I will forever cherish, as we were just home conversing, laughing, and enjoying each other. There were no games to be played, meetings to attend, patients to see. Just pool time, late movies and board games, talking about their childhood and mine, and talking about their futures. Basically, just being a family.

But it also was sad that it reminded me I had maybe forgotten the simple pleasures like this and been caught up in the "busyness" of the world.
I hope a lasting effect of this is we all remember the importance of personal relationships and interaction. But in today's climate, I am not certain we will.

I have worn shorts for the most consecutive days since some long gone summer of my early youth... and possibly ever. Haven’t donned a pair of long pants since mid March. So comfy.

I've only worn pajama pants, sweats, and now that the weather has warmed up, shorts. Last week I got together with a few friends and wore jeans. I felt like I was dressing up!

My daughters (13 and 20) have cleaned out and organized every cabinet and closet in my house, not to mention the spare bedroom and garage. I've got a huge pile of stuff for the donation truck that's coming June 1st.

Positive is that I have been able to spend more time with my teenage daughters - oldest going off to college in the fall (hopefully). Able to exercise - I would say more but I did almost nothing before. Was always able to work from home so no big change and very grateful I am employed and my company has not and probable won't reduce any salaries or lay anyone off and that is 8800 people just in the US and 55,000 worldwide.

1. We got to spend so much time with our 6 month old daughter. I mean, that really is a blessing. She ended up being in daycare for only 3 weeks in the end.

2. My wife got a new, better paying job for a new company that is lightyears ahead of her other one. Not really anything to do with the lockdown, but it happened during the pandemic, so that is great.

3. No more 2 hours a day commute.

4. My company is considering making working from home standard. I am already looking at big plots of land to build a house in bucks county. I never thought I would end up there, but if I don't have to commute, why the heck not.

5. We have saved a ridiculous amount of money and basically paid off every bill we had including our car and have a lot in the bank account now.

I (we) need an aferrelli yoga pic

My wife and I have been very fortunate that we have not been impacted financially or from a work perspective. My wife works for a university supporting teaching with technology and I work in cyber security specializing in healthcare IT. We've been spending a lot of time working out, staying in shape, working in the yard and projects around the house, but probably the best thing has been all of the time spent at home with my Son and Daughter, a senior and junior in high school. I feel absolutely horrible for the kids who have really missed out on some major life events that I always took for granted. No Junior or Senior prom, no spring field hockey league for my daughter, no senior activities, no senior end of year party, no graduation ceremony, no senior beach week, not to mention they have not seen their friends since early March. All that, and to see just how positive an go-with-the-flow mentality they've exhibited in this shitty situation has probably been the most positive thing that came out of this. Proud of my kids!

it does suck for seniors in high school, probably from a growing up perspective, senior prom, senior trip, graduation, beach week, graduation parties, summer college orientation visit. All things that are once in a lifetime type things that those kids are never going to get back.

also have to agree about the laundry comment. not wearing professional work clothes everyday makes laundry (and no ironing) real easy. Also don't shave anywhere near as much anymore.

And I guess the lack of car time commutting is pretty awesome. I only have 30 minutes but that extra 30 minutes of sleep every morning does help a ton and then gaining another 30 minutes in the evening lengthens them out also.

And it’s even worse for seniors who are spring sport athletes.

Always pictured us retiring in New Hope. Mom's and son's were born in D town LOVE BUCKS CO

I've taken more batting practice this year than the last 20 years combined.I can hit the ball anywhere on the field I want to.The drawback is my last 4 senior softball tournaments have been canceled and the next 2 also, plus both my leagues .You can only mushroom hunt and trout fish so many times,I need softball.

I love New Hope, but I think it might be just a bit too far away from my wifes job in Summit NJ. I was thinking possibly Frenchtown or even Rieglsville. I need to explore around there more and I obviously have to see how things shake out with the job.

We raised our kids in flemington. AWESOME experience. It will take her 7 hours reaglsville to summit.

Yeah, I suppose it is 1 hour now, but when people are back on the roads, it will be quite different. We are in south orange now, which we happen to love. But without the need to commute, there is no reason to stay here with a smaller place than we could have elsewhere.

Also, she would just have to do a day or two in summit, is the hope.

The negatives far out-weigh any positives.

Elderly forced into group quarantine... they should have just sent elderly to death camps

The economy imploding while people hid in basements wearing masks

Nope, all of the clever tik toks, and the self gratification commercials of companies congratulating themselves for their responses do not make up for the negatives.

I think we all understand the considerable negatives involved here, and nobody was trying to weigh them to determine the balance. Even among a mountain of sadness, it's ok to smile at the pebbles of happiness.

Nice!

Saved some money. Worked. But, nothing to do. Montour County will go green next Friday.
Nachos and Beer at PUB II :)
