Thank goodness the people publishing this academic gobbledegook are not in the coaching profession. They need to stick to statistics and stay away as far as possible from sports.

Interesting read that examines what all recent national champions have in common...and how close or far Penn State currently is in those statistical categories that tend to correlate with championship success.

One of the most important stats not mentioned is that elite teams generally have the greatest Net YPP (YPP = Yards Per Play) - IOW, Net YPP = Avg Yards Gained Per Offensive Play less Average Yards Surrendered Per Defensive Play. The absolute best teams almost always have the best, and very large on a relative basis, "Net YPP". This statistic would be highly correlated Net Scoring Margin, but is more reliable across various, and variable, schedules strengths.
