Spring Camp News Thread....

Hahahahahahahahahaha!

He's one of the best 5 quarterbacks in the game. That statement is comical. HOPE you were being sarcastic.

Lead the B1G in passing efficiency your first year as a starter, we can dispense with the dumb crap.

He led the NCAA in passing yards per completion!

If this team can force more turnovers defensively, this team is headed to the playoff this year. And this quarterback will be leading the way.

Good coverage at the end by Wade, but that ball was perfect.

Lamont had Charles covered like a blanket, but whoever threw that ball, put it in the perfect place to be caught, and 11 MADE that catch...perhaps a hint at what might come this year? Is this the year the light comes on for 11? Like it did for 88 last year?

Toney is playing DE and getting some praise from Sean Spencer.

Don't know his current weight.

Spence above says Curtis Cothran has a chance to be dominant at DT this year. Agree with this. Think he could be All Big Ten.

Which Penn State player could make a name for himself nationally in 2017?

Thanks to James Franklin’s abilities as a recruiter, Penn State has untapped potential throughout the roster that have fans itching to see what they can do once they see the field. Despite all the upcoming talent in the pipeline- especially at defensive end, the secondary, running back and receiver- I’ll go with a player who is preparing for his final season in a Penn State uniform- defensive tackle Curtis Cothran. He may seem like an odd choice, but Cothran showed massive improvement throughout 2016 and should only get better from here. The defensive line was significantly better with him in the line-up following a four game suspension to start the season, and as the season grew, so did his penchant for snuffing out ballcarriers in the backfield and making big plays. I’m betting that Cothran is among the national leaders in tackles for a loss and comes out of nowhere to become one of the Big Ten’s top defensive lineman in 2017.

Any of you guys think Cam Brown could beat out Koa Farmer for the starting spot at SAM? Franklin seemed to really praise him up during his opening PC.

What’s the team’s biggest weakness that needs addressed?

I’m not sure how such a thing can happen at Penn State with a nearly endless revolving door of legends at the position, but linebacker is the biggest question mark heading into 2017. The team is set in the middle with the return of Jason Cabinda and backup Brandon Smith, but the SAM and WILL spots remain somewhat of a mystery. Manny Bowen should be set, and his absence due to a suspension was notable during the Rose Bowl loss to USC. He performed well as a sophomore, but still needs plenty of improvement to meet the lofty standards at Linebacker U. Cam Brown and Koa Farmer will compete for the other spot, but each has a long way to go as an every-down player. With some young talent adding depth, the linebacker position could ultimately become a strength this fall, but as of now its the biggest unknown for a team looking to defend its status as Big Ten champions.

It's certainly possible. I'll bet anything Franklin wishes he didn't have to pull the shirt off of Brown last year as he wasn't ready physically to play at this level. He really doesn't move like a guy who is 6-5 so hopefully that stayed the same with the added mass. He still has quite a bit of developing to do, but it wouldn't shock me at all to see him out there.

Ross Tucker predicted that as well... I mean after he was told he couldn't select Brandon Smith (he has a man-crush on him).

I thought Cam Brown was at the Will LB position backing up Bowen with Miller at the Sam with Farmer.

Sterling Jenkins, #76 in this clip, is just enormous. He's 2nd string RT so far, maybe the light is going on.

Hope so. Sterling's massive size brought big expectations. Hope for his sake he can make his huge size payoff with on field results. It would also be a huge plus for the team.

CJF may be just the kind of leader who can get into Sterling's head and help to motivate him to be his best. Jenkins will be a guy to watch this year.

The kid flashed his ability several times last year. Here's hoping he has an outburst of production.

I think you will see Cam on both sides. Here's hoping that he can put on another 5-10 lbs before the season.

Christian Campbell with some nice D. Small sample size, but they are posting lots of highlights of passing/defending vertical routes. Teams will load the box on Barkley, gotta keep making them pay.

Lamont Wade's talent could prompt the coaches to tweak the corner depth chart

Lamont Wade, Penn State's blue-chip true freshman corner, is taking part in spring drills after enrolling in January. The Lions are deep at the cornerback position with starters John Reid and Grant Haley returning as well as the top two backups -- Christian Campbell and Amani Oruwariye. But James Franklin and his staff have not been shy about playing true freshman right away. Look what he did with Reid early in 2015.

"He's a different kid because he's already physical," James Franklin said of true freshman corner Lamont Wade, who is participating in spring drills. "He has tremendous confidence, but sometimes that goes away when you get to college. That hasn't gone away. He seems to learn well. He's made plays so far."

Lamont Wade already has a pick.

Penn State's spring practices are barely a week old, and the freshman cornerback has reportedly instead been treating these sessions as if they might end at any minute.

He's been aggressive.

He's played hard.

Wade has, thus far, fulfilled every sky-high expectation.

“He’s doing a really good job with competing,” said Saquon Barkley after Wednesday's practice. “He really don’t care who you are, he’s really going to go after you and come after you.
