Earlier today I proposed a method of determining the seeds at the Big Ten conference tournament by taking the total sum of dual team points earned by each wrestler during ONLY Big Ten conference duals. I realized this has many issues but I was too deep into my spreadsheet to throw all of this work away.

First, I'd like to that WrestleStat for having dual results in consistent formats which made splicing in Excel fairly painless.

Second, I'd like to discuss some of the issues I encountered and my "solutions"
1) Inconsistent number of matches wrestled.
Solution: Determine each team's "starter" by taking the wrestler with the most total matches for the team then add an estimator of future points by taking their average points so far multiplied by the number of conference duals remaining to arrive at their estimated final point total.
2) Ducking.
Solution: Remove the dual points from the 6's that weren't pins, so that's forfeits, DQ's and injuries. The wrestlers keep the prior points earned but don't get extra credit for the future.
3) Spreadsheet only shows wrestlers with conference wins.
Solution: Screw it, if you don't have a conference win, you don't get a seed from me.
4) Te'shan and other mixed-weight wrestlers.
Solution: I don't think my spreadsheet handled this perfectly because it's counting all matches wrestled by each wrestler but only their points in each specific weight class. So Te'Shan has 3 points at 165, 3 points at 174, and 3 matches wrestled on both. I don't think anyone else has wins at multiple weights but it's probably messing with the averages a bit.

Aaaaand my wife says it's time for bed so I'm just going to dump the list here and let you all tear it apart while I sleep. I'll be able to answer questions/comments when I get into work tomorrow (shh).

One question, does your boss know you are open to answering questions today at work, at least questions about this?

Interesting take, thanks for the google doc, much easier to look at. Oh no! Cenzo is third...

i said shhhhh ;)

yeah this really put a damper on some psu guys. it has shak all the way down in 7th because he'll only have 5 matches vs everyone elses' 9. also nick lee at 5, but that's more of a cluster with the top 5 all between 27-30 points. very possible lee leads that group after his matchup with carr.

other notes:
- sean russell benefits a lot from 2 forfeits
- pletcher at 6 shows how deep 133 is
- psu's back and forth at 149 puts either wrestler in the 8-11 range
- model has pantaleo and hayes at 7 and 8 at 157 would make for a tough matchup for nolf in the quarters
- massa is actually leading joseph in dual points right now 23-22 so joseph could fall to the 4 seed for this model
- drew hughes with the 2 seed at 174 for now, will likely fall to 4 or 5 after his match with hall
- embree at 8 penalizes him for injury with a match vs mymar in the quarters
- nickal leads the way with 45 projected dual points
- looks like the model may have gotten heavyweight right, i don't see anything surprising there

one of the things i like about this method is that is 100% objective. you know exactly how seeds are generated so you know what needs to be done to get an "easy" path. yes, it hurts injured wrestlers by giving them a harder road, but the NCAA tourney has at-large bids that should be able to pull in any wrestler that just gets a bad draw and doesn't earn an automatic berth.

i'll update this again after this weekend when big ten duals are almost complete, i think only rutgers - maryland is next weekend

Before you scroll down, please understand that I appreciate your work with these stats and my response below only pertains to one small but faulty part of your analysis.
