Pittsburgh Pirates 2021 Season Thread

A 5' 11" RHP and a catcher who throws out 15% of base stealers. Ugh.

Plus the possibility of losing some of the other recent guys in rule 5 draft means these could be worthless trades

Well the Buccos are about to be swept again in a series. Thinking this has occurred often, just did a quick count.

Might have missed something, but it appears when they are in a series of 3 or more games, their record in the final game of a series involving a possible sweep will be:
2-9 when trying to avoid being swept
0-6 when trying to get a sweep

It’s time to change the title of this thread. The Pittsburgh Pirates no longer exist and henceforth shall be known as the Pittsburgh Prospects. They have been a Quad A team for 25 years and will forever be such.

Gotta feel sorry for Ke’Bryan Hayes as he is now the official McCutchen token player. By keeping him, the Prospects pretend to be building a team around him. “He is the foundation of the team” will be the mantra to sell the ‘rebuilding’ moniker. And a few suckers will swallow that load.

The one good thing is that the poor suckers stuck in a Prospect uniform can now unpack their suitcases. Every player had to have at least one suitcase packed and ready to go. Now they just use their crying towels for being stuck in the ‘burg.

I am here to tell you there is Life After Death!!!!

Raise The Jolly Roger in a Laugher versus the Philthies!!!!! Almost as good as Mucking The Fets!!!!

Board Favorites Polanco (.208) & Hello Newman (.215) with Big Games and 2 RBI each. Hayes and Reynolds with two hits each.

Will Crowe with 6 shutout innings while surrendering ONLY ONE hit.

Fun Fact of the game was the Bryce Harper circled under TWO fly balls he should have caught and he fanned on them.

Bucs look to win the series tomorrow. Batting Practice Brubaker Vs Nola. Not a favorable matchup.

P.S. Mitch Straight Ball Keller is back in town.....may start Sunday.

Yes, 1-hitting the Phillies was awesome!!

Raise it again!

3 - 2 over the Phillies.
Buccos Phleece The Philthies to Walk Off and Raise Jolly Roger!!!

Batting Practice Brubaker shows up with his best stuff to keep Pirates in it.!!!

Hello Newman (.216) continues his torrid pace with an early Trip, Trip, Triple to give Bucs the early lead!!

Reynolds leads off ninth with huge double followed up by El Coffee (who wore the 0 - 4 collar) moving the runner on a put out. Stallings hits grounder to third with one out and Reynolds beats tag at home!!!

McCutchen leaves game early....Phillies announcers feared he might have a health concern?

Pirates looking for brooms in the closet hoping to Sweep The Philthies out of town!!!

This was a milestone victory for the Buccos as they now have captured 40 wins on the season!!!

I believe I saw at the beginning of the season the over / under on Pirate wins was 56.

Based on previous Pirate attempts to Sweep teams this year........it will not happen.

Walk it off! What’s worse, spending no money and rebuilding (Pirates) or spending TONS of money, desperately trying to win….and failing miserably? (Phillies)

I’m confused now. Are we supposed to cheer for wins or losses?

I'm cheering for losses. I'd rather them have a bunch of no 1 overall picks since they are going to suck donkey balls for the next several years.

Chances of them having number one pick next year are similar to me getting a drink on the rocks when I arrive in hell.......so good luck with that......

Liover Peguero, player of the week, Greensboro. 6 HRs.
Looks and swings like Roberto. Age 20.
Part of Marte deal.
Pirates minors are loaded, and young.
Time will tell. I’m looking forward to seeing the updated top prospects lists. Right now the Pirates don’t have anyone sniffing the top ten.

Raise The Jolly Roger over the Brew Crew Thanks to board favorite Gregory Polanco!!!!! El Coffee highlights included :

A Game saving catch in the ninth that robbed the Brew Crew of the winning home run!
Another Monster game with two hits (now up to .211)!!!
Two stolen bases (now up to 13 without getting caught)!!!
Plenty of Smiles, Hustle, and Energy!!!!

Fellow Board Favorite Hello Newman (.217) also comes up clutch with two hits, an RBI and two runs scored.

Chips A Hoy Free Parking with a huge 3 run double in the 7th started the Crazy Mongolian Reversal of a comeback with a three run double to initially give the Pirates the lead 5 - 4. This after the Brew Crew had dominated the game 4 - 0 and had a no hitter threw 6 innings.

The Pirates win it in the tenth after the miraculous Polanco catch in the bottom of the 9th. Polanco legs out an infield hit to put the Pirates up 6 - 5, followed up by an unbelievable Reynolds at bat that culminated with him flipping an outside change up in to center field for two insurance runs.

Bednar solid in the ninth in the closing role!!!

Can the Pirates win the series with tomorrow's day game??? Ahhh Fat Chance of that!!

Steven Brault penciled in to take the hill after missing the entire season so far!!!

So what you're saying is that we were damn lucky enough to win!

I'll take it.

Well the Pirates complete another series being swept. Head scratcher decision of day in top of 8th, down 3-2 with runner on first and 2 out. Slow as molasses cleanup hitter Moran tries a push bunt down 3rd base line during infield shift. Execution fail as pitcher easily fields ball and throws him out.

Is there any other team in majors who would attempt a bunt with their cleanup hitter in that situation?

Yes. Nutting's unwillingness to spend wasn't just at the major league level. It was also in the minors. They weren't investing enough in developing major league players to replace the ones that he would sell off creating a vicious cycle of crappy teams.

This is not true. One of the reasons for the newer draft bonus pools is because the Pirates were overpaying to get guys to sign which raised the bar for other teams. They spent on their minors. They just stunk at developing that talent.
