Penn State wrestling has made an addition to its upper weights for the 2021-22 season. Former Cornell wrestler Max Dean will wrestle with the Nittany Lionsunder head coach Cael Sanderson moving forward, according to his brother Gabe Dean, a former two-time NCAA Champion.

“He’s at Penn State now,” Gabe said Monday on an episode of “Beyond The Fight,” hosted by Chael Sonnen. “He’s going to be training and wrestling there.”

Max, who is a two-time All American and finished second at the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championships at 184 pounds, will be a junior when it comes to eligibility. The 184-pound slot on Penn State’s roster is held down by 2021 NCAA Champion Aaron Brooks, but Gabe said his younger brother will likely bump up a weight.

He won't take a spot from Brooks. It is Beard who will probably be benched.

Does Penn State have a women’s wrestling team? If so, holy crap.

PSU Wrestling is the Alabama of Football (from another thread where people are complaining that Alabama gets the best of everything). New recruits are usually top 10 ranked Pound for Pound (similar to football 5 stars). The lower ranked recruits that PSU gets works out nicely as well (Cassar, Rasheed). Grabbing one of the best transfers, at a not needed weight just because the PSU room is easily the best. Add in the NLWC which has 4 Tokyo Olympians there. The best coaching staff around. And also a huge feeder system with David Taylor's M2 center and soon to Open Bo Nickals MMA facility. And more rumored transfers may be coming as well. With only 9.9 scholarships to give, even the best wrestlers at PSU can't be giving close to full rides. That really tells you the commitment these guys and their families have to being the best. Its good to be King. The last 10+ years have been great, and there is no slowing down for the future (it actually looks like it is picking up faster)

Technically, we are better than the Alabama of football. We have won 8 out of the last 10 national championships.

Speaking of recruiting, at least Cael knows what he's doing

Max Dean transfers from Cornell to Penn State. Max finished 2nd place at 184lbs in 2019, and sat out last season because of the Ivy League stopped sports during COVID.

Max's brother Gabe won two national titles at Cornell. Max is expected to move up to 197lbs, because Aaron Brooks won the national title at 184lbs this past year and returns as the no. 1 ranked wrestler at that weight. Penn State also returns national champions at 133lbs, 141lbs, and 174lbs, making it possible that they'll have 5 national champions across the 10 weight classes next year.

Maybe Cael can give Franklin some tips about establishing a national dynasty?

Great article, thanks so much for the post and Alabama analogy.

Not long ago, google Nico Megaludis. Nick Suriano transfer left a hole for a bit though, Howard is a strong young kid
Spencer Lee was coming here, but Nick Suriano was already here, so Spencer Lee went to Iowa. Suriano transferred to Rutgers because his dad had a snit-fit about Cael holding Suriano out of the NCAAs because of a high ankle sprain. The transfer affected Penn State's pipeline at that weight.

Has anyone been to the hawks nest or Hawkeye report yet on the dean transfer? Probably some gold over there being posted as we speak.

Coach Koll heading to Stanford? Cornell may be breaking up because of their refusal to compete last year. Yani and brother could be in play as are others if Koll heads west.
