If you had to draft a college team of 10 American (in their prime) wrestlers from any era using today's weights, who would your team be? One wrestler at each weight. Who would there back ups be?

125 Spencer Lee.
133 Tom Brands backup Dan Gable
141 Kyle Dake back up Logan Steiber
149 Zain Retherford back up ?
157 Jason Nolf back up Mark Schultz
165 David Freaking Taylor back up ?
174 Ed Ruth backup
184 Cael Sanderson back up Bo Nichol
197 Jaden Cox
285 Carlton Hasselrig back up Gable Stevenson

Schultz won NCAAs at 167 and 177…now 174 and 184 after weight changes. Perhaps you mean Dave…but he was “only” a one time champ at 167. I am taking Kemp in your list (he did compete at 150 and 158 which is closer to this weight class…though he won his titles at 158 which is really now 165. Also give me Yojiro Uetake at 133 over Brands.

I assume Uetake is out because he was not American, but I would take Gable over Brands.

Given that it’s folk weights, I assumed we were talking best all time NCAA competitors and completely skipped the American qualifier. My bad.

Assuming he hasn’t naturalized since then, I retract my remark. Skill for skill, prime Uetake still puts it on Brands, though.

Assuming best all time means at their absolute best, so a single time champ who obliterates everybody might be a better choice than a three or four time champ.

125 - Ricky Bonomo could hold his own against Spencer. As could Jack Cuvo, Gene Mills, Mike Caruso, Hugh or Ed Perry, or Gray Simons.
133 - Uetake or Gable
141 - Bill Koll, Andre Metzger, Darryl Burley
149 - Wade Schalles
157 - Lee Kemp
165 - Kyle Dake
174 - Mark Shultz
184 - Cael Sanderson
197 - Ed Banach
Hwt - Kyle Snyder
Unl - Chris Taylor, Jim Nance

It’s fun to think about how some of these legends from the 70’s and 80’s would do in todays NCAA field. Watching someone like Chris Taylor or Carlton Haselrig face the likes of Gable Steveson or Mason Parris is just fascinating to think about. Imagine dropping in a prolific pinner like Wade Schalles into this years 149lb field 🤯
