Does PSU have a shot at the Rose Bowl if....

Possible. The criteria is ambiguous. If OSU loses but stays ahead of Penn State unlikely. If they drop below us its possible but outside of ranking all the other criteria would seem to favor osu (h2h, overall record, higher finish in the division, most recent Rose Bowl appearance was the 2010 game vs 2 years ago.)

"ROSE BOWL GAME PRESENTED BY NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL (Pasadena, Calif.) 1. When not hosting a semifinal, Big Ten Champion will play in Rose Bowl Game, unless among top four teams. 2. If Big Ten Champion qualifies for playoff, Rose Bowl Game will choose a replacement Big Ten team. 3. Rose Bowl Game has sole discretion on replacement team, and will generally select highest-rated available team, but will take into consideration final College Football Playoff rankings, head-to-head competition, division champions and most recent Rose Bowl Game appearances."

If PSU finishes above OSU and OSU is outside the top 12, then yes, it's possible if not likely

If PSU finishes above OSU and OSU is still in the top 12, I'd think for the reasons fastlax noted, that OSU still would go to the Rose.

Even if we (somehow) finish ahead of OSU in the CFP rankings, we'll still be behind OSU in "head-to-head competition" and "most recent Rose Bowl Game."

I'd put the odds of Penn State in the Rose Bowl at 0.00001%. Possible, but very slim.

OSU is almost certainly going to stay in front of PSU in the CFP rankings, even if they lose this weekend.

So if they lose like 34-10, the committee (who has expressed doubt in OSU all season long) is going to go out of its way not to drop OSU below PSU just because OSU beat them?

Still remember when the Rose Bowl was a reward for a great Season and not a mediocre one. That's the problem with the watered down system now in place.

IMO it really depends on the outcome of the UM-OSU game. If UM totally lays a beat down on OSU than the question is "how far does OSU drop"??? Right now in the all-important CFP Poll --- the one which almost exclusively determines the NY6 bowl games --- OSU is #10.

So, if OSU is #10 and let's just say they get crushed at home by UM, do they only drop 1 spot to #11??? Do they only drop 2 spots to #12??? Do they drop 3 spots.... that is the big question. Based on the outcome of the UM game, how far does OSU fall????

The NY6 pretty much takes the top 12 teams in their poll, with a few exceptions. For example, this is a year the Rose is locked into a B1G - Pac12 match-up. If no B1G or Pac12 rep is in the top 12, then they would take the highest ranked B1G and Pac12 teams. But as long as a B1G and Pac12 team are in the top 12, then they'd take those teams.

..... So, let's say that UM destroys OSU and it's a ugly loss by OSU. They drop from #10 down to 14. Meanwhile we beat Maryland and we stay in that #11 or 12 range. Then the answer is yes, the Rose Bowl would take PSU because of our ranking in the CFP Poll.

No. There are numerous examples of one team losing to another team but still being ranked higher even though they have similar records.

No. Not every year. For years the Rose Bowl just automatically took the B1G champs vs. the Pac 10 Champs. MOST years it worked out that the champions from these two very good conferences were excellent teams and had excellent records, and were top 10 teams. But there were definitely examples of either the Pac 10 or the B1G having a down year and sending a "mediocre" representative to the game because their league had a down year.

Didn’t PSU play a three loss Oregon in 1994. I remember being disappointed that was the best opponent we could get

Hate to say it, but if tOSU loses by 3+ TD, both PSU and tOSU drop. Could easily see us drop to #14 and tOSU drop to #13. Unless we best MD by 40, then that changes things.

We did but they were rated #9 after starting out 1-3. That was a heart-breaking loss.

Had to dvr the game and watch it later that night. Kept my phone off the entire day and saw the game winning kick at around 3 am. Gut wrenching end to an amazing game.

This. The debate is moot unless the team shows up with a dominant victory over the terps. Not impossible but based on the last several weeks i'm not sure it should be expected.

I agree with both of you. If OSU gets curbed and Penn State squeaks by both should drop. WVU should be ahead of us right now

If psu doesn't drop after stinking it up vs rutgers, they won't fall for squeaking by md in the rain

that is prime issue - we have not looked good for a while and particularly the offense looks very marginal. assuming we beat Md, and that is far from assured, it would have to be by a large margin. tOSU would still be above us in the division even if they lose and we win.

right now hope we have good focus for Maryland and TM can get back to where he was earlier in terms of running the ball as that is our key. if he cannot run it is not a good sign for us.

Honestly, it has nothing to do with Penn State. Ohio State won't drop much, if at all, because there's pretty much no 2 loss teams.
