Defensive Line Coach

SC bio:

John Scott Jr. was hired as the defensive line coach on January 22, 2019.

Scott, a native of Greer, S.C., has spent the past two seasons at Arkansas, coaching the defensive tackles under Chad Morris in 2018 as the lone holdover from Bret Bielema’s 2017 staff, when he served as the defensive line coach.

Scott spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons with the New York Jets, beginning as a defensive quality control coach in 2015 before being promoted to defensive line assistant coach. Prior to his time in the NFL, Scott spent time as a defensive line or outside linebackers coach at Texas Tech, Georgia Southern, Missouri State, Norfolk State and his alma mater Western Carolina.

The Jets led the NFL in rushing touchdowns allowed and red zone defense in 2015, while finishing second in rushing defense and fourth in total defense. Both defensive tackle Muhammad Wilkerson and cornerback Darrelle Revis earned Pro Bowl honors. Scott was promoted to defensive line assistant prior to the 2016 season in which the Jets finished fifth in the AFC in rush defense and rushing touchdowns allowed. Defensive tackle Leonard Williams earned a Pro Bowl nod.

Scott mentored and coached a trio of defensive lineman at Texas Tech that worked their way into the NFL. In his first season, he tutored Kerry Hyder to All-Big 12 honors and an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine. Branden Jackson had his best season under Scott Jr. in 2014 as a junior before getting an invite to the 2016 NFL Combine.

Prior to joining Texas Tech, Scott spent three seasons (2010-12) as the defensive line coach and special teams coordinator on three Georgia Southern teams that advanced to the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs. Along the defensive line, he mentored two All-Americans, including Brent Russell, who was an All-American all three years under Scott Jr. and finished as the program’s all-time sack leader. In 2011, the Georgia Southern defensive line featured Russell, All-American Roderick Tinsley and All-Southern Conference selection John Douglas. In 2010, Russell was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award for the nation’s top defensive player at the Championship Subdivision level.

Scott was named defensive line coach at Georgia Southern in January 2010 after one season coaching outside linebackers at Missouri State and three seasons at Western Carolina coaching defensive ends and outside linebackers. As defensive line coach at Norfolk State for the 2005 season, Scott helped the Spartans achieve a No. 12 national ranking in passing defense. That season, Norfolk State allowed just over 158 yards per game. He attended the NCAA’s Minority Coaches Academy in 2008 after being selected from a pool of 400 applicants.

A 2000 graduate of Western Carolina and four-year Catamount letterman, Scott returned to coach at his alma mater in 2006. An All-Southern Conference choice at defensive end in 1998, Scott had 17 tackles for loss. His career total of 31 tackles for loss ranks 10th in Western Carolina history.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in communications from Western Carolina, Scott played three years of professional football, including two years with the Greensboro (N.C.) Prowlers of the Arena Football League 2. He was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2000.

While playing for the Greensboro Prowlers, Scott gained coaching experience at the high school level as defensive line coach at West Davidson High School in 2001. Scott then went to Louisiana-Lafayette as a graduate assistant for two years, serving as a defensive line graduate assistant. He completed his master’s degree in education at Louisiana-Lafayette in 2006.

Scott is married to Blakely Low-Scott, and the couple has two children, John Wesley Scott III and Juliette Alexis Scott.

Wikipedia has John Scott Jr. already at Penn State as the Defensive line coach but there's been nothing else reported. Very odd

I like the idea of a coach with his connections in the south, but he hasn’t produced any game changers...

Everytime a name has been leaked to footballscoop, that has been the hire. It will probably be official tomorrow

I was reading up on him and he apparently took the SC job to be closer to his family. It sounded like his wife and kids never left SC

If it’s John Scott, that’s truly a “meh” hire, but Franklin is known to make stupid decisions in pressure situations.

It’s the reason why the 5 star recruit at DT they got yesterday hesitated and almost flipped to LSU at the last minute. He wouldn’t sign his letter. I’m guessing SC told him who the next coach would be and had to do convincing as it was a big change this late in the game he had to consider.

If he can recruit 5-star DTs, then bring it on. His DL-men have been incredibly productive at every level. I wanted Elijah and then Burton from MSU, but neither of those two have been able to reel in the war-daddy 5-star DT recruit like John Scott, Jr, somehow did for a losing South Carolina squad. I like this hire better than the Clemson guy.

Funny Burch played for Hammond SC the team Southern Columbia beat 36-0. Muschamps son was the qb and I think they intercepted him 4 times.

I would not exactly call his recruitment of Burch (5* DL) "reeling" him in. The kid goes to HS about 5 miles from the S. Carolina campus. He is from Columbia, lived in Columbia his entire life. Literally grew up being able to walk to the S. Carolina campus ....... would be like us recruiting a kid from State College HS, who also grew up in State College his entire life.

The fact that Burch actually went down to the wire and was 50/50 with LSU until he put ink on paper is a little of a concern.

No. I do not believe this is true. There has been 'drama' with Burch going back to the early signing day back in Dec. The story is that he actually wanted LSU. He was a S. Carolina lean for a long time because he grew up 5 minutes from campus. LSU came in and did a great job on getting into his head. He had doubts and would not sign in December. Mom strongly wanted him to stay in Columbia to be close to home but rumor is that he really liked LSU better. That is the drama that played out thru this past week. Story is that both LSU and S. Carolina thought they had his commit.

The premise of your analogy is sound as it concerns the recruit’s proximity to the school, but the context is that South Carolina was 4-8 last year, so it isn’t really an apples to apples comparison with PSU...
4-8 is a significant recruiting hurdle to overcome

Sounds like our attempt to pull the Harrison kid out of Buckeye Land.

Penn State: Source tells FootballScoop South Carolina defensive line coach John Scott Jr. is a strong candidate for the same role at Penn State. James Franklin is expected to make a hire soon. Scott has coached defensive line at South Carolina, Arkansas, with the New York Jets, at Texas Tech and more.

Good hire, and I'm sure he has started to build some recruiting ties down south and he's young at 44 but I'm little surprised he left since he is from SC and sound like his family too.

Seems like a good hire. To pull him from an SEC school in his home state where his family still lives says something about the current appeal of PSU. I have to think his past relationship with Pry helped. I assume he will recruit SEC country.
