2017 Recruiting Class Thread

The list below is completely my thoughts and predictions. The list contains current Penn State verbal commits as well as 2017 uncommitted recruits with a Penn State offer that I believe Penn State has the best chance at landing based on priority from the coaching staff and interest from the recruit on Penn State.

Please share your thoughts on how the 2017 class will end up.

We are in the Singleton race too. I would Vretman and Warren, while we haven't offered Vretman he is still a potential, and Warren did talk a lot about us in his latest Scout interview with Brian Dohn even though we aren't currently one of his top 3. That said, last week I said this is a likely and ideal scenario:
  1. Stueber - 3* OT
  2. Conliffe - 3* DL
  3. Pitts - 3* ATH/S
  4. Hainsey - 4* OL
  5. Holmes - 3/4* ATH
  6. Anthony - 4* OLB
  7. Webb - 4* WR
  8. Hansard - 4* DT
  9. Swift - 5* RB
  10. Wade - 4/5* CB
  11. Singleton - 4* OLB

Great stuff. I think Swift ends up down south, but if PSU can land 2 of those WR's, one more of those OL, 2 of those DT's and the rest of the guys you listed I'll be extremely happy. That will be a very solid class to follow up the last 2.

Hold on to Clifford (the most important single guy in the class)....and add:

4 (or, hopefully 5) Quality OL prospects
3 Quality Linebackers
2+ Defensive Tackles
2+ Wideouts
and least one guy capable of playing a "cover corner"

And the rest is all gravy - fill in with as many quality athletes as possible

You really think Hansard is 'likely'?

That's 28 and most believe that the 2017 PSU class will be around 20.
1 - QB Clifford
1 - RB, 50% Swift or ???? Who else will strongly consider PSU??
1 - TE, hopefully Dotson
2 - WR's, 2 of the 4 you listed would be fine
5 - OL, 3 committed and 2 of the other 3 you listed
2 - DE's, committed
2 - DT's, 2 of the 4 you listed - CJF looks at Conliffe as a DT ?, likely.
3 - LB's, 1 committed. If CJF does not get both Proctor and Anthony, who will come to play LB for LB-U??????
1 or 2 - CB's, 1 committed and one more. Wade or ???
1 or 2 Safety's, Pitts and/or Holms who will be recruited as an Athlete but will likely end up at Safety....

With 3 total DB's that would be 20.

Couple things at play. I don't see him going to Pitt or UMD. I don't think he's all in on the RU stay home movement and OSU and UM have slowed on him. So if this season goes optimistically then I think we're right in it. I have him in my "In The Battle" category, but him delaying his announcement was good new for us. I think it's as likely as anyone else right now, but it's dependent on the season just like a lot of our recruits. We're looking at a class that could be top 15-12 if things go our way, or much lower if they don't. I have an optimistic feeling on the season that makes me think our status with a lot of these guys will increase.

Oh I wasn't saying Penn State was going to take 28 or all of those listed. I was just saying those are who I believe we have the best chance with at each position in order.

For example:
I say we take 2 of the 4 WR's I have listed
1 more of the 3 uncommitted O-Line I have listed
2 more of the 4 uncommitted D-Line I have listed

I agree that Penn State takes 17-20 in the 2017 class.

KJ Hamler

Standing 5'9", 155-pounds, the St. Mary's Preparatory standout cites Steve Smith, Andrew Hawkins, Tavon Austin and Antonio Brown as NFL receivers he emulates. His developmental process has involved lengthy YouTube sessions in which Hamler attempts to mimic what makes these diminutive playmakers effective at the sport's highest level.

"I try to be a student of the game and a technician," he said.

Of course, there's also his speed.

This explosive element is what initially shines when you watch Hamler compete. He's targeting a third straight state title in the 4x100 and 4x200 track events and clocked a 4.43 in the 40-yard dash Saturday at The Opening's Columbus regional.

"I've heard a lot of coaches say I'm electric," Hamler said. "I can shake people at receiver in a way they don't usually see."

Rated No. 48 nationally among receivers in 247Sports composite rankings, he holds more than 20 scholarship offers nine months shy of national signing day. Some view this as a battle between Big Ten Conference rivals Michigan State and Penn State, but it's important to note interest extends well beyond the region at universities such as Louisville, Mississippi State and West Virginia.

Ultimately, this has the makings of a lengthy recruitment because Hamler hopes to add more options as things progress. He is particularly intrigued by several schools in the Pac-12, specifically mentioning Oregon, Arizona State, USC and Cal as programs he'd certainly consider if an offer is extended.

Michigan State is viewed as the favorite here in his 247Sports crystal ball. The Spartans carry 86 percent of experts' commitment predictions and he recently attended the team's spring game.

"I saw what I needed to see," Hamler said. "I saw my boy Donnie Corley (freshman wide receiver) get a lot of reps and it looks like he's ready for a big year. Also saw my boy Messiah deWeaver (freshman quarterback) go to work. I spent time talking to the coaches and growing those relationships. It was all good vibes."

Given his familiarity with the in-state school, it's no surprise to see analysts pointing to East Lansing as Hamler's most likely landing spot. Although he hasn't visited Michigan yet, the Spartans face conference competition from Penn State.

He attended a Nittany Lions junior day earlier this year, where he enjoyed the environment. Hamler has also developed chemistry with one of head coach James Franklin's key commitments.

"One thing I can definitely say about Penn State is it's beautiful," he said. "Me and [2017 Nittany Lions quarterback pledge] Sean Clifford have a good relationship. He wants me there really bad."

Hamler, a first-team all-state selection as a specialist last fall, is capable of contributing in a variety of roles. Collegiate coaching staffs see him in the slot, lined up out wide, returning kicks and some believe he can enjoy success at cornerback.

He took reps at receiver in Columbus during Saturday's regional camp, impressing onlookers and torching opponents throughout the afternoon:

Those efforts secured Hamler a coveted invitation to attend The Opening national finals, held in July at Nike's world headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. For a guy looking to raise his profile in Pac-12 territory, the opportunity presents a perfect proving ground for the speedy pass-catcher.

Don't expect a commitment to occur before then, as Hamler remains ambitious about gathering more offers and exploring alternatives.

"I'm going to be patient about the process," he said. "I'm not going to rush anything. If it feels right, that's when I'll make my decision."

Hopefully PSU's O does well this fall. If that occurs and people start seeing PSU turn the corner...this class will end up being very solid. Clifford is the real deal and keeps shining at events which does have to make a WR think. Hopefully Godwin and company put up some numbers this fall.

Wrestling related, but more evidence of PSU's great academic performance among its athletes.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team added national academic laurels to its perfect season, with six Penn Staters being honored as National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) First Team National All-Academic winners. Penn State’s six honorees were the most among any school in the country.

The Nittany Lions recently completed a 2015-16 season that saw head coach Cael Sanderson’s squad win its fifth NCAA national championship in the last six years, its fifth Big Ten title in the last six years, a share of the 2016 Big Ten regular season (dual meet) championship, the NWCA National Dual Meet Series title, and its sixth straight Southern Scuffle crown. The team went 16-0, 9-0 in Big Ten duals.

Penn State offers 2017 DE, Jacub Panasiuk out of Illinois this morning.

Penn State offered 2017 defensive end, Jacub Panasiuk from Roselle, Illinois today. The “Panasiuk” name may sound familiar as Penn State recruited Jacub’s older brother, Mike pretty hard last year before he ultimately signed with Michigan State in the 2016 class. Many recruiting analysts predict Jacub to follow in his brothers footsteps and eventually become a Spartan.

Penn State visiting 2017 tight end, Alexander Marshall from Andover, NH once again today
I honestly think Penn State has a better chance at landing Marshall than they do Dotson. They just need to send an offer his way before it's too late.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Penn State is set to visit tight end, Alexander Marshall at the Proctor Academy today. This is Penn State’s second visit to New Hampshire in the last few weeks. Marshall has yet to hold a Penn State offer, but like I said in my “Week in Review” from May 2nd, I think he has one coming in the near future.

Penn State’s top tight end prospect in the 2017 class is Matt Dotson who has a top 3 of Penn State, Michigan, and Michigan State and Matt is set to visit Happy Valley this coming weekend. I’m not confident that Penn State will land Dotson, and Penn State will then put the full court press on Alexander Marshall for their 2017 tight end spot. Marshall is by no means a downgrade from Dotson, and personally I like Marshall better at 6’7 and 240 pounds.

Some of Marshall’s current offers include Alabama, Florida State, Florida, Ohio State, UCLA, and USC. Hoping that Penn State will add their name to the list 0f the 30 schools who would like Alexander’s talent.

May 2017 – My “Penn State Crystal Ball” 2017 Class
https://happyvalleyrecruiting.wordp...y-2017-my-penn-state-crystal-ball-2017-class/

Below is my personal predictions on how Penn State’s Class of 2017 will finish as of now.

The list includes uncommitted recruits who have a Penn State offer or recruits that I believe have higher interest in the Nittany Lions and will eventually gain an offer.

I believe the 2017 class will end up with around 17 commits when National Signing Day comes around February 1, 2017

I don't see how CJF can afford to take a total of just 2 LB's in the 2017 class, given the depth chart and the fact that the two LB's in the 2016 class have the potential to grow into DE's......

See that Marshall has himself at Beaver Stadium as his twitter background. Did he add that recently or has it been up for awhile?

I noticed that as his cover photo back a few months ago. He has camped at PSU last summer and as you can see made a visit for the night game last year.
He still doesn't have an offer from PSU, but has offers from numerous other major programs (Bama, FSU, Ohio State, etc.). I know PSU really wants Dotson, but unless we blow him completely out of the water on his visit this weekend. Couldn't really provide insight on why PSU has not offered Marshall yet, but if they really would like a TE in this class that may just be their best option. Also, does not sound like PSU offered him yesterday when they paid him a visit at his school.

When it all comes down to it on February 1, 2017 for NSD I think Penn State will have more than 2 LBs in this class.

Speaking that Rivers stays committed throughout, I believe they get 1 of either Proctor or Anthony (I believe we have a better chance with Proctor). That will give us 2 there.
The list I made just speaks of uncommitted 2017 targets with a PSU offer. I have Pitts listed as Safety but there are talks they could also move him down to LB.
That also doesn't show if Penn State could flip a LB target down the road (such as Adams or Roberts who both were high on Penn State before committing to Notre Dame and Nebraska respectively). Also, I'm sure there will be new offers going out to new prospects in the future.
