WFT = Commanders

Not to be confused with the old Arena league team, the Washington Commandos

This period in the history of this country deserves a generic, non-descript, meaningless nickname like that. I hope that all of the busy-bodies are happy now. Add the Cleveland Guardians to that list too.

I’m sure I could research and find the answers, however, full disclosure - I’m too lazy this morning. Who made the push for the change of the Cleveland and Washington teams?
And, why do we still have the FSU Seminoles, Atlanta Braves and KC Chiefs being loud and proud of the tomahawk chant and chop?
🤷🏻‍♂️

This is not politics. It's just true

-FSU has been blessed by the Seminole Tribe and Casino
-The KC Chiefs mascot, oddly, is a fox or wolf or some other hard to distinguish mammal that long ago replaced a human dressed as a strong powerful tribal warrior. Respect = racism, as you know.
-Not sure how ATL has navigated...perhaps it's hard to claim that the word 'Brave' is derogatory.

It cannot be long until someone outside of PA realizes that 'Nittany' is a Native American reference and the corporate media cancels PSU...again.

Well, the word squaw is now derogatory as evidenced by Squaw Valley ski resort being forced to change it's name so I figure it's only a matter of time until the word braves is considered derogatory as well. I figure the Atlanta Braves are next in the firing line. The 2% you mention will never be satisfied. There will never be an end to this nonsense since it's not about justice for them, it's about the fight. It's about winning and forcing others to bend to their will. And that need in them will never ever go away. We could fix the problem by just ignoring that 2% but there's way too much money on the line for the people that give that 2% power for that to ever happen.

As an American of Irish decent with a very Irish last name, I am offended by Notre Dame's use of The Fighting Irish. Although the name describes some of my relatives to a tee. They were regulars in the Paddy Wagon. Whoops!

"Valparaiso University has announced plans to retire its Crusader mascot, citing concerns about negative associations with religious oppression, violence and hate groups." They are now the Beacons.

Good for them. I always hated Crusaders as a nickname celebrating a historically genocidal gang of thugs. Now I'm waiting for you to change, Holy Cross.

Wait until this hits hard at the high school level. There are plenty of PA schools with names that are associated with past local tribes.

Now that Redskins is banned, I’m waiting for the push to rename the state of Oklahoma.

Crusaders is the nickname of my high school, Bishop Canevin in West Pittsburgh, and I've always been proud of it. A crusader also is the mascot of my nephew's high school, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Moon, although their nickname is the Chargers.

Please remember that, as a very white male, your opinion carries no weight. Leprechauns engaging in fisticuffs is a perfectly acceptable mascot to represent "Irish."

Long time Indians fan. There was no need to change the name. The Indians were originally named as a tribute to native Americans. Just a sign of the PC times. Yes, Chief Wahoo had to go. To me, they will always be the Indians.

If the organization announced that the fans want the old name back, and that they are tired of backing down to a mob of people who are just looking for something to be offended about, and who are not football fans at all, and therefore, the team is going back to the Redskins, season ticket sales would have skyrocketed.

As someone who hates the Redskins, I'm glad this didn't happen.

As I've said before, if many of these people had been alive 80 years ago, it would've been much harder to have succeeded in WWII, considering the cowardly manner that has developed in this country. Even Sean Penn has referenced that men in tis country are becoming too feminized, and that says a lot coming from him.

Commandos, Guardians and Kraken.

Crusaders is a broad term to describe many groups of people.

You linking it to a single group is incorrectly applying your own opinion.

If you think Holy Cross cannot hold the name Crusader, then you are decidedly anti Christian.

So i saw a story to the effect that Biden's granddaughter tweeted out a picture of the dog suggesting that it be the team mascot. Obviously, the child has no future in politics, since only an idiot would seek to associate themself or their dog with Dan Snyder. Then again, maybe she does have a future in politics.

I thought
Washington Football Team was the best. They should have just gone with it. The logo could have been a football in their colors.
That's what I thought that Snyder would do just to stick it to the people who wanted this change; it would've been reminiscent with how most European soccer teams are named, like Chelsea Football Club.

funny Bellefonte removed "Red" and became just the Raiders and now apparently are going back again a year later to one more be the Red Raiders

$$ talks...was too expensive to rebrand and replace everything

nope, not at all what happened
My bad. Remembered skimming an article with the following. Misread it slightly.

“The funding needed to revamp our buildings far outweighs our need to take away our culture and our history,” Don Grove of Spring Township said.

Rebranding efforts in the high school gym alone were expected to cost nearly $100,000, the district’s director of fiscal affairs said this fall.

If they wanted to lean into the military, why not go with a name like the Redtails? Would honor the Tuskegee Airmen while keeping the name similar to its former identity. It’d also be much less generic!

Among the problems with this new name is simply the length of the name -- 3 Syllables.

Nearly every team nickname is one or two syllables; if it's longer, the popular name becomes shorter
  • 49ers -- becomes Niners
  • Patriots -- known as Pats
  • Buccaneers -- Bucs
So what is the everyday name for the Commanders?
Commies?
