So, like everybody else I had planned to just watch wrestling these next three days and am totally bummed as much for the #33 seeds as the #1 seeds.

Therefore, I spent the afternoon thinking of a way to "simulate" the NCAA Tournament and also throw in the upsets that truly make this March Matness!

So, using the one interactive bracket i found, I put all the matchups into wrestlestat and that spit out a predicted score

From there I sorted wins into decisions by 1-3 pts, decisions by 4-7 pts., major decisions, tech falls, and falls

For decisions 1-3: I gave the favorite (wrestlestat predictor to win) a 50% chance at winning by decision, 7% chance at major, 3% chance at tech, 6% chance at fall, 25% chance at losing by decision, 6% chance losing by major, 1% chance losing by tech, 2% chance getting pinned

Basically the favorite according to wrestlestat has a 66% chance to win

For decisions 4-7 pts. I gave the favorite: 30% win major, 25% win major, 10% win tech, 15% win fall, 12% loss decision, 3% chance loss major, 2% loss by tech, 3% loss by fall

The favorite has an 80% chance to win

For majors: I gave the favorite: 18% win decision, 40% win major, 12% win tech, 20% win fall, 7% loss decision, 1% loss major, 1% loss tech, 1% loss by fall

The Favorite has a 90% chance to win

For tech falls: I gave the favorite: 15% win decision, 20% win major, 30% win tech, 31% win by fall, 1% loss by dec., 1% loss by major, 1% loss by tech, 1% loss by fall

The favorite has a 96% chance to win

For falls: I gave the favorite: 12% win decision, 15% win major, 30% win tech, 41% win fall, 1% loss by decision, 1% loss by fall (they got caught)

The favorite has a 98% chance to win

Then I took all these results and put them in an excel document and randomly sorted all the results so that all the decisions weren't in the same group of numbers and labled these results 1-100 in the excel document

Then I used google's random number generator and picked a random number for each and compared that to the random sorting of results.

Below were the results I got through 157 lbs.

Bravo-Young was upset and Verkleeren was also defeated. Nebraska had two kids upset while Young went down for Iowa. Results are below. I highlighted the major upsets by sees in bold. I am going to start typing up the 165-HWT results from the first round shortly.

Yes. This took like 90 minutes to simulate the entire first session of matches.

I swear this is random but Marinelli and Lujan both go down as #1 seeds although my random generator did not give me as many upsets or results other than decisions that I might have expected. Penn State goes 4-0 in the back half. Nebraska's tough day continues with Labriola going down.

Team scores after session I (assuming the bracket is calculating correctly. If anybody knows how to an excel file I am happy to do that.

Not a lot of bonus for Penn State in the opening round.

1 Iowa 17
2 Arizona State 13
3 Iowa State 10.5
4 Campbell 10
5 Penn State 10
6 Ohio State 9.5
7 Princeton 9.5
8 Missouri 9
9 Wisconsin 9

First half of tonight's session in the books. Penn State will bring everybody back for day 2 in theory world. 165-285 "wrestling" right now. Not sure if anybody even finds this interesting but I will keep going.

Ok. You got me interested. Looking forward to tomorrow. Make sure it’s possible that someone misses weight !

I didn't put in a possibility that anybody fails skin checks or misses weight. Maybe I should have made that like a 1/500 chance just so odds are it happens once over the course of the weekend.

I enjoy doing these but at the same time I look at these matchups and can't help but think what could have been ...

Session III "underway." Quarterfinals in the middle four mats and consolations on the outer 4. We will have another round of consolations after and be down to 16 guys after today's first session. Expecting the first results to come in around noon.

Session III Update (through 157 lbs.)

Bad news early in the session for PSU title hopes. Iowa puts 3 of their first 4 into the semifinals and Young is still wrestling back. Bravo-Young stays alive in the consis but Verkleeren is pinned to take away point potential from PSU.

The bonus points were flying at 125. Jackson DiSario is the breakout star but has a meeting with Spencer Lee in the semifinals. Derek Spann also earns All-American honors at 133 out of the #21 seed with a fall in the quarters and has Rivera in the semifinals. Pletcher goes down as the fourth #1 to fall already while Lee puts Murin in the consolations to get some key points after bonus from Lee and DeSanto for Iowa. Lugo keeps the Iowa train rolling as 149 went chalk until #18 Jonathan Millner of Appalachian State upsets Brayton Lee to earn All-American honors. He has taken out Kizhan Clarke, Austin O’Connor and now Lee. Verkleeren gets pinned in the wrestlebacks as the first Penn State or Iowa wrestler eliminated. Top three seeds plus Cinderella #20 Jake Tucker make up the semifinals at 157

Anybody who had Alex Marinelli as the first Hawkeye out of the tournament can claim their prize. Penn State looked to be turning the tides as Joseph and Hall both made the semis (along with Kemerer) but then Abe Assad might have just sealed the team title with a tech fall of Aaron Brooks in a stunning turn of events as the points were flying all over the place during the 184 quarterfinals. Darmstadt beating Rasheed certainly did not improve PSU’s chances. Heavyweight holding pretty true to form other than the previous round upset of Cassioppi who is still alive in the wrestlebacks.

Nebraska really wrestling better after a tough opening session as they move into the top 10 and are just a couple points out of a wide open team trophy race for the top 4.

The overabundance of upsets (far more than any NCAA tournament ever) suggests that either Wrestlestat is a poor predictor or that your probabilities weren't strong enough. Still, it is a fun exercise.

Yeah. I guess that is what I get when using a google random number generator. I just let it play out the way it did in a one time occurrence.

In the preliminary round I felt like I wasn't getting as many upsets as I thought I might. Although the upsets that did hit were big ones like #1 seeds going down.

Brooks was a 7-3 predicted winner (4 pt. favorite vs. Assad in wrestlestat) and so he had an 80% chance to win that match. Only 2/100 chance he would get teched and that number just came up.

definitely a fun exercise, but yeah the probabilities of results are skewed toward the underdog. i believe wrestlestat publishes their wrester ELO scores, which can be used to infer win probabilities rather than assigning probabilities yourself.

now that i'm thinking of it, does wrestlestat do any validation of their match predictions vs actual results? i'd be interested to see how accurate it is.

Penn State loses Bravo-Young to #3 Tucker of Cornell (Bravo-Young was a 1-pt. favorite according to wrestlestat) while Cassioppi falls to Hillger of Wisconsin. Just a thought from what others have posted. Question for @andegre. I used 1-3 pt, 4-7 points, majors, tech, falls. Is there a way in wrestlestat to tell how often somebody is predicted for a major and ends up getting beat?

The dog bone is set! Semis in the middle and consis on the outside. We are "underway" in perhaps the greatest night of wrestling this whole year!

Semifinal/Round of 12 results through 157

Spencer Lee and Pat Glory show why they were seeded 1, 2 in this weight as they put together huge semifinal performances to get the night started. First electric moment of the night came at 133 when Seth Gross sticks DeSanto and the Penn State faithful are starting to smell blood in the water. Those cheers are just about to bring the roof off this stadium as Nick Lee puts the finishing touches on a tech fall right as Max Murin goes down in the round of 12. Pat Lugo restores some calm to the Iowa faithful with a decision. He will get Sammy Sasso in the finals who just pinned upstart Jonathan Millner of Appalachian State in the semifinals. Ryan Deakin is through as No. 1 seeds are now 3-0 in the semifinals where he will face David Carr who handled Hayden Hidlay in a mild upset.

Kaleb Young breaks out the offense in his consolation to earn All-American honors. Kolodzik, Brayton Lee, and Quincy Monday all bested in the round of 12 as Princeton’s trophy hopes take a huge blow despite Glory's win to start the night. But, we have not had the show stopping semifinal upset yet. Iowa getting closer to the team title, leading 96-52.5 with Penn State needing to answer in the second half of the semifinal round ...

Semifinals/Round of 12 (165 lbs. – 285 lbs.)

We have our upsets …

I should have known when I typed my review of the first five semifinals something was going to go awry and sure enough Vincenzo Joseph gets pinned by old foe Josh Shields in the semifinals. No sooner are the Iowa fans high fiving in the stands than Michael Kemerer is upset by Kaleb Romero in the semifinals at 174. Isaiah White and Mark Hall will be opposite those wrestlers in the finals. Favored in his semifinal by wrestlestat but a surprise to get there, Abe Assad punches his ticket to the finals and will have #17 Noah Stewart of Army in the completely busted 184 lb. bracket. Darmstadt beats Brucki in the all-Ivy 197 semi while Noah Adams continues to roll from the No. 2 seed. Steveson and Parris make it another 1-2 final with Parris putting on a show with a tech fall.

Aaron Brooks pins at 184 for some much needed points for Penn State as they trail 108.5-68.5 and can only have a maximum of 115.5 if they pin out the rest of the tournament. Shakur Rasheed earns All-American honors in his final NCAA Tournament. No. 1 seeds Lujan (UNI) and Moore (OSU) drop round of 12 battles as #1 seeds go a perfect 6-0 in semifinals. Luke Pletcher is still wrestling back and earned All-American honors but three #1’s (Marinelli, Lujan, Moore) will not even place. Everything coming up roses for Warner who pins a tough Aiello and will now face Dakota Geer after his upset of Moore.

One more round of consolations and we are done with Friday night’s action ...
