well yes and no . . . I've often joked that Marty McSorely deserves half of Gretzky's fame . . .
it was less "physical" in the sense that anyone going after the talent knew a goon was going to go after HIM later in the game. it opened up the ice a lot . . .
but damn, the great one knew where to be, where to pass, where to shoot ALL THE TIME. his ice awareness in unparalleled
Not suggesting he is on a par with Gretzky but Jagr was out of the NHL from 2008 to 2011.

There are just some guys - not very many - who stand out so far ahead of the competition that the GOAT tag applies. Gretzky is clearly one of those guys. Jerry Rice (at least as far as WR's are concerned) is another. Mariano Rivera is clearly the GOAT of closers. Jim Brown for running backs.
I'd go Tretiak, Makarov or Kharmalov for Europe. Those guys were awesome
