OT: No Poll - Just post your favorite/most memorable song lyrics line...

Replacements:
Well a person can work up
A mean, mean thirst
After a hard day of nothing much at all

I could go all day with Westerberg lyrics. A couple of my favorites:

I'll write you a letter tomorrow
Tonight I can't hold a pen
Someone's got a stamp that I can borrow
I promise not to blow the address again

Everybody at your party
They all look depressed
Everybody dressin' funny
Color me impressed

Thought of this song all through, well, you know when.

You don't really need to find out What's going on You don't really want to know Just how far it's gone Just leave well enough alone Eat your dirty laundry Kick 'em when they're up Kick 'em when they're down Kick 'em when they're up Kick 'em when they're down Kick 'em when they're up Kick 'em when they're down Kick 'em when they're stiff Kick 'em all around

I once worked with a friend on a sitcom idea. A running bit through the show was going to be a Westerberg lyric thrown into every episode. I remember the line we had in the pilot episode we wrote was one of the characters referring to a girl he was after as his, “white pearl in a sky of ebony” (from Westerberg’s Black Eyed Susan). So many turns of phrases.
Here’s another:
Being your own lampshade
Somewhere there’s a party
Here it’s never-ending
Can’t remember when it started

I couldn't take it any longer
Lord I was crazed
And when the feeling came upon me
Like a tidal wave
I started swearing to my god and on my mother's grave
That I would love you to the end of time
I swore that I would love you to the end of time!

Not a fisherman, but I always liked this one:

Today she met me at the door
Said I would have to choose
If I hit that fishin' hole today
She'd be packin' all her things
And she'd be gone by noon

Well I'm gonna miss her
When I get home . . .
Not always a fan of covers, but check out the Post Malone cover of that Brad Paisley song.

You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you
You'll get the chance to stick the knife in

Island drunk is what I am
I've been sittin' at the bar mixin' black and tans
Can't say nothing for the shape i'm in
I ain't drunk i'm just drinkin'

Yes I am a pirate
a few hundred years too late
the cannons don't thunder there's nothing to plunder
I'm an over 40 victim of fate
arriving too late - arriving too late

or

I have been drunk now for over two weeks
i've passed out and i've rallied and i've sprung a few leaks

I see your sister naked
weren't nothing I tried to see
See your sister by the pool there
weren't nothing i tried to see
hope its not huntin' day
hope it's not your daddy's shooting day

You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you
You'll get the chance to stick the knife in

Island drunk is what I am
I've been sittin' at the bar mixin' black and tans

Drunken lyrics could be an entirely separate thread. Here’s one that’s a take from a sort of anti-Cheers theme song:

Everybody wants to be someone's here
Someone's gonna show up, never fear
'Cause here comes a regular
Call out your name
Here comes a regular
Am I the only one who feels ashamed?

All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new

Another classic. I literally could go for hours on end discussing his lyrics.

This is becoming addictive:

Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waitin' for a train
I was feelin' near as faded as my jeans

Wastin' away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt

The thumb goes up, the car goes by
Won't somebody stop and help a guy...hitchin' a ride

I can see you, brown skin shinin' in the sun
You got your hair combed back and sunglasses on, baby

I walked the avenue 'til my legs felt like stone...I heard the voices of friends vanished and gone
At night I could hear the blood in my veins...as black and whispering as the rain

Standin' on your mama's porch...you told me that you'd wait forever
Oh and when you held my hand...I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life

Red lights are flashin' around me...get up, it looks like they found me
Indiana wants me...Lord I can't go back there

Cue police bullhorn: This is the police...give yourself up...you are surrounded

There's so many sinking now
You gotta keep thinking
You can make it through these waves
Acid, booze, and ass
Needles, guns, and grass
Lots of laughs...lots of laughs

I always thought it was "real union flight attendant" (because of the always on strike line -- or is it always on stride? -- I see that both ways as well) but I see it both ways, so maybe we'll never know.

Also, bear with me on this, but in my mind the Vampire Weekend song "Harmony Hall" makes me think of how the public and BOT handled Paterno in the Sandusky case.

With respect to the public being outraged and making up their mind immediately on a false narrative that could never be changed:
Anger wants a voice, voices wanna sing
Singers harmonize 'til they can't hear anything

With respect to the BOT and Old Main (insert for Harmony Hall), and replace "wanna" with "want PSU to" in both places in the last line:
And the stone walls of Harmony Hall bear witness
Anybody with a worried mind could never forgive the sight
Of wicked snakes inside a place you thought was dignified
I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die

with apologies to John Prine....

"And daddy won't you take me back to Raheigh County
Down by the Coal river where paradise lay?"
"Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Blankenship's coal train has hauled it away
29 miners died there that day"

If posting the lyrics to an entire song wouldn't piss people off, I'd include Ol' '55 - hard for me to pick just one line.

I think that is the line. But who knows? Whatever the line was. Westerberg probably doesn’t remember now and probably never sang it that way again.

I woke up in a SoHo doorway,
a policeman knew my name.
He said, ‘You can go sleep at home tonight, if you can get up and walk away.’

I stumbled back to the underground,
and a breeze blew back my hair.
I remember throw in’ punches around,
And preachin’ from my chair.

Give me one reason to stay here
And I’ll turn on back around.

You got a fast car
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I-I, had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

She was gonna be my wife
And I was gonna be her man
(Oh Rhonda)
But she let another guy come between us
And it shattered our plans
(Oh Rhonda)

I always guessed it was that too, but when I googled right before posting, "reunion" came up. But "real union" makes more sense.

  • Is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worse?
  • And I found out a long time ago
What a woman can do to your soul
Aw but she can't take you any way
You don't already know how to go
  • City girls just seem to find out early, how to open doors with just a smile

All of these are great, but it doesn't get any more meaningful than to hear Warren Zevon singing "Open up, open up, open up for me" (Knocking on Heaven's Door) knowing that he only had a couple of months to live.

I’ve always been crazy but it’s kept me from going insane

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me,
Than have to have a frontal lobotomy,
I might be drunk but at least I'm not insane.
