Old Dominion

Old Dominion improved it’s NCAA performance last season getting 11 points (32nd place) compared to 2 points (50th place) in 2018. The Monarchs qualified three wrestlers with Larry Early reaching the podium @157. Old Dominion went 9-7 in duals with their biggest win coming at Northwestern. They placed 4th at the Navy Classic and 3rd at Reno Tournament of Champions. Old Dominion finished 4th at the MAC Championships, just behind 3rd place Central Michigan by 1.5 points and 2nd place Buffalo by 2.5 points.

Old Dominion is in position to improve upon last year’s results with all 10 starters returning. They will be seeing some added competition within the MAC as the conference is absorbing the seven teams from the EWL. Old Dominion has not yet released their 19/20 schedule.

125
Michael McGee (Jr) <Plainfield East, IL>

McGee qualified for the NCAAs a second time last season (1-2 in 2018). He won the MAC championship and entered the NCAA Championships as the 12 seed. McGee lost to (5)Jack Mueller (UVA) in the second round. He advanced through the wrestlebacks to the round of 12 where he lost to (7)Pat Glory (Princeton). McGee’s overall record was 31-6. <Bonus: 32.4%, RPI: .635>

133
Trevon Majette (So) <Oscar Smith, VA>
Killian Cardinale (So) <Brenstville, VA>

Majette became the 133 starter late in the season and went 12-12 and didn’t qualify for the NCAAs. He placed 7th at the MAC Championships. Majette did have a win against a qualifier, Anthony Cefolo (Rider). Cardinale began the season as the 133 starter and went 13-17. He had a couple of wins against qualifiers, Tim Rooney (Kent St) @133 and Korbin Meink (Campbell) @125.

141
Sa’Derian Perry (Sr) <Lake Gibson, FL>

After Perry became an AA (8th place) for Eastern Michigan in 2018, the wrestling program was shut down and he transferred to Old Dominion. Last season he qualified for the NCAAs again but didn’t make it to the podium. Perry went 24-10 overall and finished 4th at the MAC Championships (4 allocations). He went into the NCAA Championships as the 19 seed. Perry was pinned in the 2nd round by (3)Nick Lee and then lost in the wrestlebacks to (20)Matt Findley (UVU). <Bonus: 35.3%, RPI: .619>

149
Kevin Budock (Jr) <Good Counsel, MD>
Kenan Carter (Sr) <Metea Valley, IL>

Budock began the season at 157 and dropped down to become the 149 starter. He compiled a 28-16 record but didn’t qualify for the NCAAs. He came in second at the MAC Championships but there was only one allocation. Budock didn’t have any wins against NCAA qualifiers. Carter began the season as the 149 starter and finished with a 15-9 record. He also didn’t have any wins against qualifiers.

157
Larry Early (Sr) <Oak Park River Forest, IL>

Early became Old Dominion’s 33rd All-American in school history last season (I didn’t know ODU had that many). He had a 25-8 overall record and finished 2nd at the MAC Championships (5 allocations). Early was the 7 seed at the NCAAs and advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating (10)Steve Bleise (Minn) in the second round. After losing to (2)Tyler Berger, Early secured a spot on the podium in the wrestlebacks and finished in 8th place. <Bonus: 30.3%, RPI: .642>

165
Shane Jones (Sr) <Stroudsburg, PA>

Jones is a two-year starter and finished last season with a 20-18 record. Jones placed 5th at the MAC Championships (1 allocation). <Bonus: 18.4%, RPI: .537>

174
Luke Drugac (Jr) <Morris Knolls, NJ>

Drugac went 15-15 last season and didn’t qualify for the NCAAs. He placed 3rd at the MAC Championships (2 allocations). Drugac didn’t have any wins against NCAA qualifiers.

184
Antonio Agee (Sr) <Hayfield, VA>

Agee went 17-9 last season and didn’t qualify for the NCAAs. He was injured at the MAC Championships and ended up placing 6th. Agee’s biggest victory last season was against eventual NCAA 17 seed, Andrew McNalley (Kent St). <Bonus: 23.1%, RPI: .592>

197
Timothy Young (Sr) <Ellsworth CC, IL>

Young finished last season with a 14-12 record. He fell just short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships, finishing 2nd at the MAC Championships (1 allocation). Young upset Wyatt Koelling (Missouri) at the MAC Championships which is probably what kept Koelling from getting an at-large bid. Young had one victory against a qualifier, Stephen Loiseau (Drex). <Bonus: 15.4%, RPI: .527>

Heavy
Will Hilliard (Jr) <Wyoming Seminary, PA>
Ali Wahab (Jr) <Crestwood, MI>

Hilliard went 17-8 last season and didn’t qualify for the NCAA Championships. He went 1-2 and placed 7th at the MAC Championships. His biggest win was against Ian Butterbrodt (Brown) who made it to the Round of 12. <Bonus: 36.0%, RPI: .562>
Wahab got most of the dual starts last season going 20-13 overall. He had one victory over a NCAA qualifier, Colton McKeirnan (SIEU). <Bonus: 30.3%, RPI: .542>

New Faces
Old Dominion had a solid recruiting class with three top-15 (in weight class) incoming freshmen, all coming from Illinois:

Anthony Molton (Fr) <Lockport, IL>
Molton was the Illinois 3A state champ @120 in 2018 and placed 3rd @126 in 2019. He recently became the Junior Nationals Freestyle champion @120. Intermat ranks him at #12 @126.

Alex Cramer (Fr) <Grayslake, IL>
Cramer was the Illinois 2A state champ @160 in 2018 and placed 2nd @170 in 2019. He also was the 2018 Junior Greco national champion @170. Intermat ranks him at 9th @170.

Jacob Bullock (Fr) <Cahokia, IL>
Bullock was the Illinois 2A state champ @220 in 2019 and placed 2nd at 220 in 2018. He was also the 2018 NHSCA Junior National runner up. Intermat ranks him at 6th @220.

ODU's ability to recruit Illinois is really impressive, how do they pull that off?

Of ODU's All-Americans historically, 13 were when the school was Division II through the late 1970s. They won the NCAA Division II basketball championship in 1975, so the move to Division I was shortly thereafter.

Daryl Thomas probably has a thing or two to do with this...
That trend continues but started before DT. His predecessor, Mike Dixon, was a college teammate of former OPRF head coach Mike Powell. Dixon spent a lot of time at camps in Illinois. DT continues that and has been on IL's Fargo coaching staff. ODU has recruited IL better than the Illini but that could be changing.
