Rather than just pay for play it looks like they want to pay for NIL rights. And only half the student athletes get paid.

So they want to be able to market their NIL such as jerseys on return for paying a stipend. And not everyone gets paid,

This will, ostensibly, make them "employees" and the road to unionization (then a CBA) has been paved

If you read the article, it says that the NCAA, to proceed with this is seeking Congress to pass legislation to formally declare that paying for NIL does not make them employees and to create an antitrust exemption.

At some point someone is going to ask how this ties to the mission of higher education, and is it worth the unintended consequences
