Yesterday was the grand opening of the Michael P. Murphy Navy Seal Museum in Long Island.
For those that don't know, Lt. Michael Murphy was a Penn State graduate (class of 1998) and joined the Navy in 2000. He would rise to the rank of LT and serve on SDV Team 1. He was part of the ill-fated Operation Red Wings mission in June of 2005, the same mission discussed and shown in the book and movie, Lone Survivor. Which is the story of Marcus Lattrel being the lone member of his team to survive an attack by a local Taliban backed militia. All in all, 19 US Military members died in that Y. He received the Medal of Honor posthumously and was the first member of the Navy to receive the award at the time since Vietnam.
He has been honored at Penn State in multiple ways including an award named after him as well as a memorial on campus.
