Yesterday was the grand opening of the Michael P. Murphy Navy Seal Museum in Long Island.

For those that don't know, Lt. Michael Murphy was a Penn State graduate (class of 1998) and joined the Navy in 2000. He would rise to the rank of LT and serve on SDV Team 1. He was part of the ill-fated Operation Red Wings mission in June of 2005, the same mission discussed and shown in the book and movie, Lone Survivor. Which is the story of Marcus Lattrel being the lone member of his team to survive an attack by a local Taliban backed militia. All in all, 19 US Military members died in that Y. He received the Medal of Honor posthumously and was the first member of the Navy to receive the award at the time since Vietnam.

He has been honored at Penn State in multiple ways including an award named after him as well as a memorial on campus.

They were trapped on a mountain, he was the radio man. They had to call for help but couldn’t get a signal so, even though he was already wounded, he crawled onto a rock in the open to get a signal and call for help....knowing full well he would likely die. Got the call made before he was hit and killed. RIP Lt.

And other heroic men died in that battle.

And in 8th grade, Murph interceded to protect a special needs kid who was being bullied and assaulted by a group of kids. Took on the group - that speaks volumes of his courage as a very young kid when peer pressure and the need to fit in is at its highest.

Stud and hero (a word that is otherwise drastically overused)

I enjoyed his classic song "Wildfire"

I need to go. That team on Red Wing was amazing. Lt Murphey was simply an outstanding man as all of the unit.
