Football James Franklin Weekly Press Conference - Indiana week

James thinks the defense played like they're one of the best defenses in the country on Saturday.

Said there was "too many controllable mistakes" to win on Saturday. Assuming he means offensively but notes that defensively they were tackling too high.

Players to note...

Offense: Not really much he talked about there but ntoed quarteback Brendan Sorsby is athletic and has done some good things.

Defense:
S Philip Dunham and DE Aaron Casey are the two names he pointed out.

Franklin notes that earlier in the game when they were about to go for it on 4th and 1 but decided to punt that they had to call a timeout since there were 12 men in the huddle. Momentum and surprise factor is gone with the timeout and decided to punt.

A few times early so far he's emphasized the struggles on third down.

James calls the offensive line performance in general "we didn't play up to our standards in that environment." Also notes that that was not just the offensive line but the entire offense.

On defense, "it's hard to be critical" but doesn't think they did a good job of being aware of where Marvin Harrison Jr was at all times like they planned.

Asked about the Michigan "scandal"..... Franklin says Penn State is always aware of their signals and how they plan to disguise them, etc.

Says going to the NFL style of play calling wouldn't solve the entirety of the issues that have been presented by what's going on.

Franklin ones again notes that if you go three-and-out, there won't be the opportunities to get everyone the touches that is needed.

Says Penn State run issues come back to needing to block better on the perimeter, make safeties miss, and how defenses are playing the Nittany Lions this season.

Franklin notes that Penn State has to be careful that this loss doesn't get them twice and notes that's happened in the past.

"We need to be able to attack the entire width of the field and the entire 110 yards of the field. " - Franklin on the passing attack.

It's like he needs 4 days to notice anything. After Harrison rips off 3 catches in their first possession make some adjustments then in the moment. Don't tell us on Tuesday we should have done something to contain Harrison. Talk about a day late and a dollar short, my God this guy is overpaid. You already needed to be prepared. Harrison is basically their offense. Seems our coaches use snail mail when texting is available. Just slow on the uptake.

With the wide receivers there are a bunch of guys competing for time but no one is separating themselves. We see what happens on Saturday's but in practice, it comes down to consistency. Also notes that missed assignments, wrong routes, etc also factor into it which plays into it as well.

Franklin believes Penn State got away from their identity offensively against Ohio State especially in short yardage. Doesn't think they were as consistent or aggressive as they weer in the past. Notes part of that is affected by the opponent.

Franklin is transparent in that Penn State has spent more time in breaking down this loss inside the office, watching the film, having discussions. "We haven't gotten a lot of sleep"

He fired the WR coach but nothing has gotten better.

Sounds like Cephas. Maybe the reason he couldn’t enroll in till summer was because he’s not very bright.

The god damn issue was a QB who went 12 for 31....smh...

We will I am happy about losing the 150 because we win and if we lose Im 150 richer.

Didnt want to start a new thread just for that so I put it here!!

No one cares what happens this Sat against weak opponent, James. You fail against teams with a pulse

Up 28-10 against OSU a few years back and still lost the game because JF was satisfied with a FG with enough time on the clock for the Buckeyes to score a TD. And, we had the ball on the Buckeyes 7 YL, 1st down in the 4th quarter and never gained an inch on "3 RPO's" Freaking pathetic......

He should go somewhere else period win when your suppose to and lose when your suppose to that the past 10 years

He chokes every year against Ohio State and Michigan. His QB follows suit. Whether it be Hack, or Trace, or Cliff, and now Drew...they all choke. And bet the ranch Drew will choke on Nov 11.

You had to bring that nightmare up! The guy coaches scared and afraid to lose in these big games and that is why we lose. That game you reference was absolutely pathetic, talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Franklin sounds like a guy who has accepted Ohio State is just better than his program instead of believing they are on equal footing and Penn State should beat them at least every few years like Penn State did before Urban/Day.

We’ll see how the team reacts Saturday. Another noon start against underwhelming Indiana. Do they come out fired up ready to make a statement after the Ohio disaster or do we continue with the sloppy poor play and slow starts? There just seems to be a motivation problem with PSU teams at times.
