Football GAMEDAY THREAD: Penn State Football opens season vs. Purdue

This defense is either outsmarted or out matched. Talent level isn’t there.

Allar should be playing.

Playing lots of players. Too many?

Time to get the best players on the field?

Touchdown Purdue.

Boilermakers go 2-for-2 in the second half and take a 24-17 lead with 1:11 left in the third quarter.

Not wrong--it doesn't matter the circumstances. It is based simple on the rule. You're overthinking it. How you're describing it is how the rule SHOULD be but that's not how it is. We agree it SHOULDN'T be a penalty but given the rule it is. This isn't complicated.

No, I'm not wrong - the receiver was not in the act of catching the ball. The Purdue player was clearly IN THE ACT of trying to pick up, and advance, the ball AFTER it had gone to the ground. The Purdue player is not protected by the Defenseless Receiver rule in that circumstance - he CLEARLY was not attempting to catch a pass when the defender acted on him, he was attempting to pick up what he thought was a live ball off of the ground and advance it (and no whistle had blown signifying incomplete pass) - he presented himself to the defender as a RUNNER, not a receiver. No penalty.
