2018 Recruiting Thread

"Levis earned the distinction as the most athletic quarterback by Nike SPARQ testing numbers this spring, as the 6-foot-4, 222-pound prospect posted a 123.27 rating, tops among his position and No. 24 overall in the metric. Those numbers included a 4.80-second 40, a 4.10-second shuttle and a 35.5-inch vertical leap."
If Levis convinces them to offer then I withdraw my earlier optimism on Fields watching this season and reconsidering

I will not give up hope until he signs. I doubt James will either. Let's go out and win and roll up video game numbers. If he doesn't remember why he wanted to be here than someone else will see it.

What's kind of a joke, is the kid actually committed to us for a while, and now we aren't even in his top 5. Its almost like Penn State is a "B" school, then he started getting interest from all the "A" schools. Taking advantage of the hype......

Trace was a three star. McGloin wasn't any star, a walk on. Of course there is a base physical talent but the heart and the smarts of this particular position can make up a lot of talent gap with the right person. Add in a great team placed around them and an "average" QB can do an outstanding job. James F. knows how to pick them.

I'm sure Franklin sees good in this kid, but the 4.80 40 doesn't seem to fit his offense.

4.1 shuttle and almost a 36" vertical shows he's a quick twitch, athletic kid. Barkley was saying recently that he was timed at a 4.49 40 when he came to PSU and that now is 4.33. He'll get it down.
Exactly. Tommy Stevens' recruiting profile lists him as running a 4.7 40 and a 4.7 shuttle. If Levis is running a similar 40 and a much, much faster shuttle at the same stage in his career, he'll fit the mold just fine.

I've always wandered how tough it is to pick up the read options? His tape looks pretty conventional.

With that said, Fordham still worked the system nicely with a pro style qb. I definitely do not doubt that this coaching staff can turn almost any qb into a star regardless.

Will Will Levis be the next Class of 2018 quarterback to receive an offer from Penn State?

The chances seem pretty good now that the 6-foot-4, 222-pound passer from Middletown, Conn., has set up an unofficial visit to see the Nittany Lions according to Sean Fitz of Lions247. His report states that the three-star with 23 offers, with one most recently coming from Florida State, will camp for the PSU coaching staff on Friday night.

If all goes well, an offer is likely to be in the cards.

Enter Levis, who was impressive at The Opening Regional in New Jersey back at the end of the spring, as he ran a 4.80-second 40-yard dash and clocked a 4.10-second shuttle en route to scoring the highest SPARQ score out of all campers at the event, a list that included Penn State Class of 2018 commits Justin Shorter, Zack Kuntz, and Pat Freiermuth along with a number of highly-touted athletes.

According to Hawkeye Nation, Levis is calling Syracuse, Iowa, and Florida State his current top three, though it's not clear how a Penn State offer would change his outlook. National analyst Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports did offer a hint, though, when he predicted Levis will ultimately be offered by, and wind up committing to, Penn State before all is said and done.

Culpepper plays for Plant high in Tampa which is a powerhouse program in the state, so his highlights are against top notch competition. Getting him on board could open doors for future recruitment in that program. They always put several kids in Div 1A football

DT PJ Mustipher

P.J. Mustipher.

A four-star defensive lineman from Owing Mills, Md., McDonogh, Mustipher has long been eyeing the Lions as a potential destination but things seemed to really get serious after a spring visit to campus. He visited once in April and once in May, and the question now seems to be whether he will decide soon or wait until he takes official visits in the fall.

So will he pick Penn State?

Here's what Mustipher told PennLive last week at The Opening:

"Things are going great with [Penn State]. I've always had a relationship with them, so nothing's changed and we're just going to continue to talk."

He added that Penn State will get an official visit if he decides to take officials, which means it's not clear whether or not he will or not. The Lions are a strong favorite to get Mustipher, per 247Sports, but his decision timeline isn't clear enough to say whether this visit is the one he pulls the trigger on or not.

OT Rasheed Walker

Walker speaks with Penn State on a daily basis, so this will be a chance for him to reaffirm in person what he hears daily on the phone from the Nittany Lions and vice versa. The 6-foot-5, 280-pound lineman is a four-star and seems to be considering Maryland and Ohio State the most along with PSU.

So will he pick Penn State?

It's not as clear cut as it maybe one was. The 247Sports' Crystal Ball has 11 of 11 predictions for the Nittany Lions, but Walker said he has no set commitment date, and told Rivals recently that he's been to Columbus and College Park just as much as State College, perhaps indicating that those two are in play more than most expecting. It seems the Lions are easily in the right spot, but it also seems like this one might have a longer way to go than most envisioned.

DL Jayson Oweh

Penn State jumped in early for the rapidly rising Oweh, a 6-foot-5, 236-pound four-star defensive end from Blairstown, N.J., but Notre Dame and Oho State have both poured on the interest of late, and that's made Oweh stop and think. On this visit, Penn State will have a chance to go back in front and show the end why he was so enamored by it in the first place after two April visits.

So will he pick Penn State?

Most believed that Penn State would be the pick back in April and May, but there seems to be some skepticism now with some Crystal Ball picks coming in for Urban Meyer's Buckeyes. It seems likely to come down to the visits, and the best visit is likely to win out. A decision timeline is not clear, though one may come in August, but Oweh did say recently that all three schools have their advantages.

WR Daniel George

Lions247 first reported this visit. The Oxon Hill, Md., 6-foot-1, 201-pound receiver visited Penn State back in February and seemed likely to pull the trigger on a pledge when all is said and done, and he still might end up doing that. But, Maryland and Virginia Tech, among some others in his top-10, are giving him second thoughts, and so it will be interesting to see if he decides to take more visits or wraps things up soon.

So will he pick Penn State?

If George decides to decide in July, this feels like the perfect chance to make his pledge for the blue and white, but it just doesn't feel like a sure thing at this point, what with the potential for additional visits potentially pushing things into the fall. One to watch as the Lions currently sit with one receiver in the Class of 2018: Justin Shorter, who just picked up his fifth star from 247Sports.

DT Tyreke Smith

Penn State recruit Tyreke Smith visits for the Ohio State game on Oct. 22, 2016Joe Hermitt | jhermitt@pennlive.com

Smith is a priority target for the Nittany Lions. He's also a priority target for Ohio State, among many others. The 6-foot-3, 260-pound Cleveland, Ohio defensive end could also play tackle at the next level, and while he's been described by some as being a raw talent, his ceiling is enormous, which is why he is the No. 4 defensive end in the country, according to the 247Sports' Composite.

So will he pick Penn State?

It's honestly hard to see. How many Ohio kids that the Buckeyes badly covet end up leaving the state? Then, of that very small group, how many of them end up picking Penn State? You can probably see where this is going, but Smith visited the Lions right before the dead period started in late June, which was unexpected, and is now coming right back to campus now that the quiet period has started again. That's obviously a good sign, but the 92 percent Crystal Ball pointing toward the Buckeyes is hard to ignore.

OT TJ Bradley

What makes a number of schools, well over double-digits, interested in a former basketball player with a little football experience turned junior college tackle? Well, a 6-foot-8, 290-pound frame is a big part of it, as he's rated as a three-star just after a spring practice session with Lackawanna Community College. He's original from Virginia.

Land of 10 first reported Bradley's intent to visit this weekend.

So will he pick Penn State?

It's hard to figure out whether or not Bradley will want to take advantage of official visits before a January enrollment at the school of his choice, but considering the Falcons schedule (they play every fall Saturday through Nov. 12, not counting a potential playoff run) will likely keep him away from campuses until late in the year if ever, he might just decide before hand. If so, PSU looks to be running 1-2 with West Virginia, and are probably the two to watch closely.

DT Aeneas Hawkins

Courtesy Aneas Hawkins via Twitter.

A Cincinnati, Ohio four-star who is the No. 24 player at his position in the cycle according to the 247Sports' Composite ranking, Hawkins was at Penn State back in March but has been to Cincinnati more than most. He has one commitment date back in the spring but has since pushed it back to some time this summer, though it's not all that clear when. He has a top seven that also includes USC, Ohio State, and Pitt among others.

So will he pick Penn State?

After securing seven seasons of nine wins or more out of the last eight years, Cincinnati dropped to seven wins in 2015 and just four in 2016. Enter new head coach Luke Fickell, though, and enthusiasm is on the rise, and Hawkins seems to be swept up in it, not to mention he's followed the Bearcats closely since he lives in town. They are the overwhelming Crystal Ball favorite, and so Penn State will need to give its best effort so sway things here, and even still, that might not be enough.

WR Shaquon Anderson-Butts

Shaquon Anderson-Butts of Harrisburg during the Penn State 7-on-7 passing camp in State College on June 17, 2017. Joe Hermitt | jhermitt@pennlive.com

A 6-foot, 170-pound receiver from Harrisburg High, he's a three-star recruit who has offers from programs up and down the east coast. A mid-June decision date came and went without a final decision, and Butts is getting back on campus for the third time since April after he was on hand in the spring and then again for the Nittany Lions 7-on-7 camp.

So will he pick Penn State?

The Lions lead in the 247Sports' Crystal Ball, but there just isn't a clear direction for how this one will end. Florida has pushed a bit, and West Virginia has always been in the mix. A decision could come at any time for one of the Mid-Penn's best receivers, but it's difficult to say where that choice will lead him too.

Penn State is hosting its annual recruiting event, Lasch Bash, on Saturday. The Nittany Lions are expecting some big name targets for the event, including ESPN 300 receiver Shaquon Anderson-Butts, ESPN 300 defensive linemen Tyreke Smith and P.J. Mustipher and ESPN 300 defensive back Kwantel Raines among others. The targets will also be joined by many of the committed prospects to try to help recruit them to Penn State. The event has produced a few commitments in year's past, so there is a chance this year yields the same results.
