Meanwhile, further north in Maryland:

U.S. District Court Judge Ellen Hollander today issued an injunction reversing the city’s decision to cancel the event sponsored by Michigan-based St. Michael’s Media, which publishes a conservative Catholic website called Church Militant.

The group sued the city, Mayor Brandon Scott and City Solicitor James L. Shea, arguing that the cancellation infringed on their constitutional rights to free speech, religion and assembly......

Pro-Trump Virginia candidate believes sea level rise can be fixed with bathtub physics
Walter Einenkel

A Trump-loving Republican candidate for state legislature in Virginia has some interesting thoughts on climate change. Replace the word “interesting” with “painfully ludicrous” and add some sarcastic quotation marks around “thoughts.” Scott Pio is running for state rep. against incumbent Democratic Del David Reid in Loudoun County's District 32. On Monday, Pio Tweeted out an image that seemed to represent marine vessels in the waterways and oceans around North America. As you might imagine, there are a few ships at sea at all times.

However, Mr. Pio took things to a new and ridiculous place by thinking these words and then typing them on purpose: “I’m curious, Do you think the sea level would lower, if we just took all the boats out of the water? Just a thought, not a statement.” That is quite the not-a-statement, Mr. Pio!

Very quickly, Pio’s “thought” experiment began to go viral. People were still trying to parse whether or not this was some kind of performance art humor piece or a serious statement when Mr. Pio took the post down. But the internet lives forever, and Blue Virginia made sure they had a screenshot of it, which they reposted with this important information: “This guy's an actual candidate for the VA House of Delegates. Yes, this is today's Republican Party for ya...”
.........
If you had any question as to whether or not this was a tweeted joke that went sideways on a guy, Scott Pio responded and made sure you could put that all to bed: He’s not the brightest bulb in the bottom of the GOP barrel of broken bulbs.

The Tweet:

When the Loudon Democrats twitter account picked up and retweeted that Pio “is dangerously incapable of holding public office,” Scott Pio fired back:

Biden Wind-Farm Sale Opens Path to Turbines on Nearly All Coasts

The Biden administration on Wednesday outlined plans to expand offshore wind development across almost all U.S. coasts, raising the prospect that turbines could be installed from the Carolinas to California.

“We have big goals to achieve a clean energy economy,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said during a speech at American Clean Power’s Offshore WINDPOWER conference in Boston on Wednesday. Haaland called the administration’s plan a road map to show “exactly where we’re headed and how we plan to achieve a clean energy future by 2030.”

The government will consider selling development rights in waters along the Carolinas, California, Oregon and New York, as well as the central Atlantic and the gulfs of Maine and Mexico, potentially leaving just the U.S. Arctic coast untouched by turbines. All told, the Interior Department envisions as many as seven offshore wind lease sales by 2025......

A judge dismissed a lawsuit Wednesday by Donald Trump supporters who sought to inspect absentee ballots from last year’s presidential election, a decision that came a day after Georgia investigators told the court they were unable to find any counterfeit ballots.

Superior Court Judge Brian Amero’s ruling ended the last remaining major lawsuit over Georgia’s 2020 election and prevented an outside review of Fulton County’s 147,000 original absentee ballots. […]
......

Though Amero’s decision was based on the legal principle of standing — the plaintiffs hadn’t suffered a specific injury that would give them a right to sue — he reviewed the evidence before making his ruling.......

A Marine lieutenant colonel who was thrown in the brig for posting videos in which he criticizes the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other senior military leaders for their roles in the Afghanistan withdrawal will plead guilty to multiple charges at his court-martial Thursday, his attorney said.

Lt. Col. Stu Scheller is charged with disrespecting superior commissioned officers, willfully disobeying an officer, conduct unbecoming an officer, contempt for his senior leaders and violations of good order and discipline. […]
......
Scheller will plead guilty as a sign of accountability, said his attorney Tim Parlatore, who also represented Gallagher. “He will show the generals what accountability looks like.”

Scheller will forfeit more than $2 million in retirement pay, Parlatore said. He is asking for an honorable discharge. His special court-martial begins Thursday at Camp Lejeune......

The committee investigating the January 6 Capitol Hill riot announced Thursday it is moving forward to hold Trump ally Steve Bannon in criminal contempt for refusing to comply with a subpoena, as his game of chicken with the House panel now enters a new and critical phase.

"Mr. Bannon has declined to cooperate with the Select Committee and is instead hiding behind the former President's insufficient, blanket, and vague statements regarding privileges he has purported to invoke," Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson, who chairs the committee, said in a statement on Thursday.

Bannon was scheduled for a deposition in front of the committee on Thursday, and Bannon's lawyer wrote in a letter the day before to the panel saying that his client will not provide testimony or documents until the committee reaches an agreement with former President Donald Trump over executive privilege or a court weighs in on the matter.

"We reject his position entirely," Thompson continued in his statement. "The Select Committee will not tolerate defiance of our subpoenas, so we must move forward with proceedings to refer Mr. Bannon for criminal contempt."

With the committee officially announcing their decision to move forward with criminal contempt for Bannon, the next step is for the committee to hold a business meeting, which Thompson said would be October 19.

CNN reported Wednesday that the committee is unified in its plan to seek criminal charges against those who refuse to comply, and lawmakers have specifically honed in on Bannon while discussing the option publicly......

......In the first months after the vaccine rollout, Black Americans were far less likely than white Americans to be vaccinated. In addition to the difficulty of obtaining shots in their communities, their hesitancy was fueled by a powerful combination of general mistrust of the government and medical institutions, and misinformation over the safety and efficacy of the vaccines.

But a wave of pro-vaccine campaigns and a surge of virus hospitalizations and deaths this summer, mostly among the unvaccinated and caused by the highly contagious Delta variant, have narrowed the gap, experts say. So, too, have the Food and Drug Administration’s full approval of a vaccine and new employer mandates. A steadfast resistance to vaccines in some white communities may also have contributed to the lessening disparity.

While gaps persist in some regions, by late September, according to the most recent survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, a roughly equal share of Black, white and Hispanic adult populations — 70 percent of Black adults, 71 percent of white adults and 73 percent of Hispanic adults — had received at least one vaccine dose. A Pew study in late August revealed similar patterns. Federal data shows a larger racial gap, but that data is missing demographic information for many vaccine recipients./////

.....“The lengths Pennsylvania Republicans will go to serve Donald Trump and the Big Lie is a national embarrassment,” Pennsylvania attorney general-turned-hopeful governor Josh Shapiro tweeted just hours before announcing that he’s running. It was one of more than a dozen recent Shapiro tweets that have used the capitalized phrase. Plenty of those on the left and right have done the same.

Trump’s erratic capitalization has been well scrutinized, particularly his Germanic tendency to capitalize every noun (along with other random parts of speech). So it’s not surprising that his public statements capitalize Big Lie as well — that is, when they don’t write it as “THE BIG LIE.”

Speaking of Germans: The term was coined by Hitler, who wrote of the große Lüge (big Lie) in Mein Kampf. In Hitler’s telling, the “big lie” was one told by Jews about Germany’s role in World War I. But then he and Joseph Goebbels, his propaganda minister, turned the Big Lie around to be about Jews themselves, as he blamed them for Germany’s ills. The Oxford English Dictionary describes it thus: “a falsehood contrived on such a large scale that its magnitude and definiteness discourage dissent (typically one propagated by a totalitarian regime).”.....

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, whom Donald Trump-era Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired hours before his retirement as the then-President's political furor toward him grew, has settled a lawsuit with the Justice Department, allowing him to officially retire, recoup hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees and his pension.

McCabe is a CNN law enforcement analyst.

The New York Times first reported the settlement.

This story is breaking and will be updated.

Perjury Watch: Trump Ordered to Give Deposition in Lawsuit for Inciting Racist Violence
News Corpse

There are numerous legal cliffs over which Donald Trump is presently hanging by the sheerest of threads. Criminal prosecutors are investigating him for election interference in Georgia, financial corruption in New York, and insurrection in Washington, D.C. And there are also a couple civil suits in progress over his alleged sexual harassment and assault.

Among the pending cases is one in which Trump has been accused of fomenting racial violence against Latinos and immigrants at his MAGA cult rallies. Those are the rallies wherein he called Mexicans "criminals and rapists," and he advocated for "roughing up" protestors at his hate mongering events. Now a judge has ordered Trump to give a deposition scheduled for next week:

"Former President Donald Trump must sit for a videotaped deposition next week as part of a lawsuit involving his anti-immigrant rhetoric, a judge in the Bronx ordered.

"A group of Mexican protesters said they were assaulted during a rally outside Trump Tower in September 2015 over the then-candidate's comments that Mexican immigrants were criminals and rapists."

This sort of deposition would be concerning to anyone accused of inciting violence. But in Trump's case it is much more problematic. That's because Trump is a pathological liar who is incapable of telling the truth for more than a few sentences at a time. Consequently, it is a near certainty that Trump will perjure himself repeatedly.

It will be interesting to see how Trump tries to dodge this deposition. He knows that he can't refrain from lying because, even if he didn't have a psychological compulsion to do so, it would mean having to confess his guilt. At the very least, expect Trump to post some furious tweets (via his proxy) attacking the plaintiffs, the judge, and the press, in a futile attempt to deflect from the facts and his fears.
