very nice write up in the 3 year suspension of KDR, whereby Damon Sims basically tells the IFC to pack sand.

there is no doubt KDR did some reprehensible things, but why even have the IFC work with the Office of Student conduct and the SCPD to make a sensible recommendation?

It's a very tough environment right now for college fraternities, and KDR messed up big time. PSU is in a position where the administration is not gonna tolerate behavior by fraternities that gives the University a public relations black eye. i understand that hypocrisy in that, given what the BoT has done since 2011, but it is what it is. KDR is not the only PSU fraternity to have been kicked off campus this year.

I have no dog in this fight, but it seemed like the IFC worked very hard to make a recommendation, and Sims just completely ignored them.

The Penn State IFC banned Pi Kappa Phi for either two or three years, based primarily on revelations of hazing. No web site with photos of nude and semi-nude women was involved in Pi Kapp's case. KDR's conduct seems, IMO, substantially worse, yet the IFC was proposing no (i.e., zero) loss of recognition for KDR, whereas it imposed either two or three years' suspension on Pi Kapp. The lack of proportionality in the IFC's proposed punishments for the two fraternity chapters probably forced the University to take action and overrule the IFC.

was there a reason why the IFC didn't recommend a harsher punishment? I'll just say my opinion is Damon Sims is a worthless toadie, so I don't trust a damn thing he says, so I wonder why there was such a disconnect between the admin and the IFC.

Dude, I wish I knew that. Never new about the IFC's proposed punishment for KDR until you posted. I don't know Sims, or anything substantial about him, but I DO know a person who works with him. I may inquire about this. Will let you know if I find out anything meaningful.

You say you don't have a dog in this fight, but you call Sims a worthless toadie??

Wow, talk about contradicting one's self. LOL.

well here's why I dislike Sims: Letter to Student Body about Freeh Report on 7/17/12

We and the Board of Trustees are committed to honor the admonitions found in Judge Freeh’s report by effecting the changes it urges. But the spirit of this University is found in its students, and I ask that each of you join us in this cause. A deepened renewal of your commitment to scholarship and service to others will demonstrate the true nature and meaning of the Penn State student experience.

Penn State’s moral stature will once again be secure if we stand as one community, determined to do the right thing, the first time, every time. The brave young men who confronted Jerry Sandusky in that Centre County courtroom weeks ago, and who were abandoned by many including our own University leaders when they were only boys, deserve nothing less.

***********
when I said I had no dog in the fight, I meant I was never in a fraternity, not a KDR defender, not anti-franternity either, and if they deserve the boot then they deserve it

Save yourself some time......don't bother.

Sims is quite worthless. That's based on his body of work, or whatever he would call it. It has nothing to do with this decision.

I read that IFC had to have a unanimous vote in order to ban an organization, and for whatever reason they could not get a unanimous vote, so their proposal was the most significant thing they could come up with when they could not ban them.

I do believe it was in Onward State's article about it, and the followup article about IFC being OK with the ban, and then expanding on the reasons for what they had initially decided on.

It's just very hard to defend that frat in any way. Talk about low-hanging fruit.

Would be nice to know what KDR actually did. First, it sounded like there was a website filled with many pictures of passed-out, nude women. There was a police investigation and a snitch and the usual crowd here was calling for kids to go to jail. Then, it seemed like maybe there weren't so many pictures. Then . . . nothing. Now, IFC doesn't even vote for a lengthy suspension, but Dean suck-ass does it anyway.

WTF?

ETA: The Onward State article says little about the web page and secret photos. It does say this, though: "pledges also were made to create stories containing pornographic images and a sex position of the day". LOL. There's some other stuff, too, but about 50% of the stuff cited in the letter is BS.

PSU isn't recognizing the frat but is the national charter letting them stay in the house? Are the members still living there for 3 years?

Apparently. It's private property.

So they can't do Thon or the homecoming float that everyone waits until the day of to create, but they now can party whenever they want, do the all-day parties that associated frats cannot, and don't have to hire the rent a cops to work at their parties anymore. This sounds like a non-punishment more than anything.

Very good point. While being a part of the IFC is overall the best option, especially with regards to recruiting, there are benefits to being independent of the political system.

I'd be shocked if their national charter doesn't hand down some sort of punishment

Can someone explain what the point of a fraternity is? Academic support? Fellowship? Public service? Something else? Maybe it all depends upon the charter of the individual fraternity. My guess is the first campus fraternities were formed more out of necessity since several decades ago housing options were limited. Having a bunch of guys in a house would help defray some costs and allow extra money to be used for hiring someone to cook and clean for them. Nowadays almost every college town has housing options for everyone. Isn't the fraternity house concept obsolete?

I'm always saying the same thing about horse-riding. But damn, it's still an Olympic sport.

Interesting fact:
Not one member of KDR has been charged with a crime or a breach of the student conduct code.

Yet KDR as a group has been banished for three years.

I guess at PSU you are now guilty until proven innocent, especially within a fraternity which was accused of having "a rape culture" before the investigation was even finalized.

Most nationals will pull the charter if the school is not recognized by the university. I imagine shortly KDR will announce it is closing down the chapter for at least three years. Too much risk for the national fraternity to let them have free reign.

Yeah, but they had to make up pornographic stories.
I don't have access to a lot of details regarding KDR....so I won't make any definitive statements on that punishment.
I will say, however, that I have to wonder what punishment the University disciplinary system would impose on drug-dealing con men who sit on the BOT? Just curious.
Does "Penn State’s standing as an educational institution....and its responsibilities" compel a strong response to criminal elements on its very own Board?

As far as I know the investigation by police is still on going.

The IFC's "punishment" was a joke. Anything short of a multi-year suspension sends the wrong message about what is acceptable in the community. Women were violated and the old boys club tried to look out for their own.

They have to sit in a room six times a year with Peetz and Skeletor.

Oh good, somebody with some inside scoop about what exactly went down. Please tell us, what did they do?

Little boys were allowed to be violated by your old boys club (the BOT) and you still defend them. I guess that's ok though, as long as they got to hang out with Jerry and get free football tickets.

Wat?

First of all, I voted out the old BOT that I could, so I'm not sure what you are talking about. Secondly, that is some warped logic right there.

There is no inside scoop, but it is well reported as to what happened. Unless you think that this is another "mass conspiracy".

It was never clear to me that we're talking about anything more than one guy with one picture.

Guys, all I can do is repeat myself. I represented one of the fraternity members. I know that as of today, no one has been charged by the university or by the county.

Sounds very familiar doesn't it? No rules or laws broken but the students are painted by the media to be deviant rapists.

And who led them to this conclusion? The university press conference announcing guilt before investigation.

And the photos? All but one were sent to the fraternity by the women who took them. The other one is more tasteful than you see in the ordinary Penthouse magazine.
