Why do QBs always look like Heisman candidates against the PSU defense?

Going to 11
Pickett went 35 of 51 for 373 yards?

Luwerke was 24 for 52 for 259 yards and 2 TDs for Michigan State last year. Haskins was 22 for 39 for 279 yards and 3 TDs for Ohio State last year. In both cases, Penn State was shredded in the 4th quarter.

What's the deal with this defense?

Was gonna start a similar thread nut it goes back decades. QBs always have career games against us. Richard Todd of Alabama in Sugar Bowl. Did so good he got drafted by the Jets. Same with Sanchez of USC in Rose Bowl. Look at Darnold in Rose Bowl a couple years back. All three went to the Jets and none have done very well....book still out on Darnold.

Other QBs have starred against us. Stanly at Iowa, Smoke at MIch St. Dude at Indiana. On and on. We always seem to bring out the best in opp QBs.

They didn’t look that way before we scrapped Scrap.

I mean... how many points did Pitt score in the second half yesterday?

The issue is our offense.

And our pass rush

Did you forget the mega many failed stops on third and double didgets during the Scrap years. How about Scraps DBs against the Pats last Sunday !
Mega many. I didn’t even know Scrap was coaching against the Pats until this week. But if you’ve seen PSU field a better DC since he left, I’m all ears to hear about him.

Lewerke nor Haskins put up Heisman type numbers there.
Heisman type numbers look like Jalen Hurts
Game 1: 20/23 332 yards 3 TD/0 Int plus 176 rushing yards and 3 rushing scores
Game 2: 14/18 259 yards 3 TD/0 Int plus 47 rushing yards (in about a half)
Game 3: 15/20 289 yards 3 TD/0 Int plus 150 rushing yards and a rushing score

Pickett had a nice day taking what we gave him. He didn't produce at TD yesterday in the air or the ground. Heisman-esque it was not.

Did you forget the Rose Bowl vs. Mark Sanchez? Scrap’s D made him look like Joe Montana.
Lots of quality CFB QBs look like that on occasion. We made the last several OSU QBs look quite excellent as well. And let’s not start with MSU’s WRs in the 4th quarter the last few years.

How about JT Barrett. Pretty much considered a running QB. Against PSU in 2017....33-39 328 yds 4 tds

As aggressive as our blitzing seems at times, it's usually accompanied with zone coverage where our DBs are off enough that 5-10 yards is easily open. How often do we bump and run? How often do our safety's sit deep and wait for the play to occur?

There is a lot of BBDB built into our defense. The closest I saw us go to selling out was the 4th down pass completion, and realistically, why did we think we needed 11 to stop that play? Pitt couldn't push the pile all game.

We finally blew up the screen in the 4th quarter once, but how many did we give up prior?

Our DEs have been severely underwhelming to date. Toney seems tired on 3rd and long after fighting 50+ lbs guys for two downs. YGM is a mystery. Oweh is still learning and just isn't ready yet it appears. Why we haven't lined him up wide and let him try to go inside I'm not sure, but every rush of his looks the same. And seldom do we ever create a conflict on the OL. We rely too much on winning 1-on-1 battles, and this unit has not gotten it done thus far.

Our best blitz all game: Brooks up the middle, coming off his normal stance. OL shifted for the DL and the middle was open. TFL on the run.

Teams know we are fast. They are installing hot reads. They are planning on getting the ball out fast. We are playing into this.

They don't. Pitt had 24 yards rushing. PSU sold out to stop the run. One blown safety contain in the 4th qtr and there were some damn good coverage PSU dbs with acrobatic catches made by Pitt Receivers (about 150 yards of them) watch the film. Stop being crybabies.

Chad Henne knew exactly what coverage we would be in in 2005. Brady Quinn lit us up in 2006. (Inexcusable) Michigan 2007. Michigan 1999. Countless others those years. It’s like he didn’t watch football and only the Penn State Football Story from 1998-2011.

Yes, but you said this never happened with Scrap. And that is at least one example in which it did. His defenses were good, but the Achilles heel was soft coverage that did get exploited on occasion.

On another note, I completely disagree about Haskins last year. He looked awful and only ended up with even mediocre stats because of poor tackling on screen plays in the 4th quarter. Without looking up his other games, I’d bet it was his worst of the season. Barrett, Lewerke, and Darnold in 2017, App States’s QB last year, and Buffalo’s QB and Pickett this year are much better examples of QB’s having career days vs. our D

I agree I hate our zone. We have CBs that are good enough to play press man. Having said that our D gave up 10 points against a power 5 team. We did make them one dimensional. We do need to get better pressure on 3rd and long.

For a grand total of 10 points. Nothing wrong with the defense.

Pitt would rather beat us and lose to the rest of the pack, they prep all summer for PSU, good riddance.
Buffalo coaching staff wants the App. St. coaching route to the power 5, again prepare all summer.
Guess what Maryland needs a statement game they also got a bye, 2 weeks to prepare for us. Penn State in the meantime will do more readjusting than prepping.

Jack Ham says the game is always up to the defense. If you can score, the D should then pitch the shutout. Great philosophy but probably not realistic.
