Wendy's to start "surge pricing"

who's gonna tell them that a cheeseburger is different than an uber?
can you imagine the negative consumer feelings of standing in line at wendy's and watching the cost of your lunch increase while you are waiting to order?

They will lose lots of business once the word spreads.

Looks like I will not be eating at Wendy’s in the future, unless it’s way off peak time like 2:30 PM.

I read the news about this a couple of days ago and thought who could be that incredibly stupid to think this was a good idea? Obviously some high up empty suit was brainstorming about this topic and got lost in the blizzard of bad ideas.

If it's something like Regular Prices are our Max Prices, but if you come to Wendy's at 2:30pm or 8:30pm, you get a discount....then I'd be more inclined to go to Wendy's during those off-peak hours. If its come to Wendy's at Noon or 5pm and get charged $25 for a Jr Cheeseburger, then I'll never go to Wendy's ever again period.

People already are paying $50 for a bag of Wendy's with tips and fees for DoorDash.

This already happens at live events. $6 for a Coke. $14 for a beer. $20 for a cocktail.

I'm not saying it can't backfire, but it's just another evolution of greed. Do the workers get paid surge worker rates?

Fast food is no longer financially feasible for the average joe. You’re better off going to a diner, to be honest. My daughter and I went to Five Guys, which I love, for the first time in years last month and spent over $40! We each ordered a cheeseburger, fries, and a drink.

No kidding. I ordered the same as you. I about fell over when she told me my total. I should have walked out. I will never eat at one again. $20 for a decent but not great cheeseburger and greasy poorly cooked fries. No thanks. I pay a similar price at my local bar for much better food and I get a beer.

I noticed that too. It was like $7 for a hot dog.

For reasons I cannot explain, I LOVE McDonald's burgers. I know...garbage. I'm addicted. The fries are disproportionately priced, I assume due to popularity. They know you're going to buy them, so they jack up the price. You don't even pay attention to the cost. You're getting it anyway. However; you have to get the app. I always get something free...every purchase. I don't want somebody delivering to me though. I'm a glutton, but I'm not lazy. They usually offer a double cheeseburger or nuggets BOGO or $3 off an order. I pull into the parking lot, place the order, then hit the drive-through. The APP is the way to go.

I make a big effort to avoid fast food in general. But I'd seriously consider eating a bowl of dirt from my garden before McDonald's. I won't even take someone through the drive through. I don't want that smell in my car.

When I walked into that place and looked at the menu board, I nearly fell over. I wanted to leave, but i did not have the time to go elsewhere as my daughter and I were on a strict schedule. I am fond of their fries at Five Guys, but no fast food meal is worth $20. At lunch you can go to a diner and get a full meal with a salad bar or a chain restaurant and get an actual entree for far less than $20.

I am generally not a fan of McDonald’s or most fast food in general. However, every once in a while I get a strong urge for a quarter pounder. It generally occurs when I’m having a stressful day at work, like my body needs beef!

And that is exactly the plan. Which makes sense to me and may work very well.

They have always had to plan and staff for peak hours. Long lines, workers bustling, grills over filled.

If this works they could cut staff at peak hour as they spread out the demand. Shorter lines make happier customers. Maybe less employee turnover.

I think it is smart and worth a shot. I would have tried in the busiest areas first as a test run. Perhaps they did.

If this change happens it will almost certainly coincide with a price increase. Then the now increased "regular price" will only be available at off peak times but will still appear as a discounted price vs. the surge prices, and that's how it will be marketed despite being higher overall regardless.

The problem with the Uber comparison is Uber/Lyft are a duopoly, where most drivers drive for both. When one surges, so does the other. When Wendy's surges, consumers will have dozens of alternative options within a short distance that won't have this sort of nonsensical food pricing. I don't see this going well unless they somehow get the entire fast food industry to follow along.

Wendy's had some recent disappointing financial results. Their new CEO, Kirk Tanner, recently came from PepsiCo where he ran the North American beverage operations. He's a smart guy but this idea is stupid. I'm sure he feels they need to do something to show the shareholders but I don't see this being successful.

can’t disagree. It’s the closest food to work. It’s too easy. Don’t get me wrong, I am otherwise a healthy fit person. I just love McDonalds. It’s my guilty pleasure.

There’s a few bars here in Baltimore that do that with their beer prices. They have 30 or so on tap and they change the prices every 15 minutes. Overall new average out paying the same price after a couple hours unless you’re the guy that doesn’t care what beer that drank, and just looks for the deals.

I guess that would be OK if it was Wendy from OnlyFans but this is the fast food joint.

Meh, I don't eat at Wendy's, nor McDs, nor any of the fast food chains where people are likely to not care what happens to my food. I eat at Chic-Fil-A and Canes for fast food. That's it. For me, it's WAY more about the people making my food than the food itself. It just so happens that with Chic-fil-a and Canes, you get both good food and better employees.

But if people begin to come in larger numbers at off peak hours does the higher price kick in?

An event is a captive audience, there for the event. Ppl accept the food/bev prices as a secondary feature, meaning no one goes to the event for a $14 beer. Asking ppl to pay $14 for a fast food burger because there is a line will not go over well.
I'm not a regular fast food eater, but I find this especially ridiculous. At McDonald's, they are making burgers as fast as they can and staging them to fill orders. At Wendy's, they promote that they put the burger in the grill when you place your order. In the name of (perceived) quality, they've built slower service and longer lines into the experience, and now they want to charge more when their model inevitably creates more surge times than other burger chains

All of this...ordered Chikfila using Door Dash...2 adult...2 kids...was almost 70 bucks. Still paid it.

And events are a great example. Everything is overpriced because people pay it. I don't think many that go to Wendy's now are going to stop but time will tell

Not sure, at this point, what businesses are supposed to do. Prices for materials keep going up and up. As we transition from the greatest wealth producing system the world has ever known into a command and control economy we are going to see further attempts at creative pricing.

With over half the country enamored with the idea of socialism it’s simply a matter of time until we see long lines of the hungry waiting for food. Don’t worry though, we will be getting rid of the evil capitalists, so your children and grandchildren’s suffering will be “worth it.” And you won’t have to go without which is seemingly all that matters.

Did you give a 20% tip included with that?

As usual if you make enough money it doesnt matter too much. So stop complaining, and find a way to make enough money.

Society has choices and why we as a society can't come together and say enough is enough is beyond me. Right after COVID there was supposedly a chicken shortage. Wings in my area shot up to about 17.00 a dozen. They still haven't came down. Chlorine tabs were another that went through the roof and in typical fashion, they as well haven't come down. It is things like this I want the government to take care of. Problem is both sides of the government are paid some handsomely that they have no reason to help.

We can't come together because the people are to stupid and busy pointing fingers at each other's political party. Blaming the other for the same things they ignore from their own party. Busy trying to run the other down, then crying foul because the other party is doing the same. Thus country is ****ed, the entire system is corrupt to the core, but the sheep are too buy taking sides and pointing fingers.

What’s all the grief about? If their peak hours are from noon to one, show up at 11:45. Or 1:10. I usually do that anyway just to avoid long lines and all those dirty huddled masses. The Great Unwashed.
