Shorter now not on the roster

What was Joe being paid during the dark years when he decided to stop recruiting?
Nobody ever knew what he was getting paid. They would say it was 500,000 but then it sounded like they were putting chunks of money in different buckets and only reporting one of them. I think around the dark years it was really 1.5 million.

The portal IS a problem, until the staff decides to approach it with the same intensity as they do with regular recruitment. We have lost major assets while getting zero, unless you count a kickoff specialist.

Who did you want out of the portal last year that would have been an improvement over what PSU had? It could be argued that we got Lamont Wade from the portal in addition to Stout.

We didn't lose any major assets. JJ may have had a rebound year....who knows. The rest were all backups. I was a big believer in Tommy Stevens and he never really could stay healthy.

JF did seem genuinely disappointed with Shorter’s leaving. The comparisons he made with Gesicki suggest the kid had some potential, although as fans we certainly never saw anything suggesting that this season or last.
I will be curious to see where he goes and what he does. I wonder whether his college career will end up more like that of Mike Gesicki or Irv Charles. At this point, my money would be on Charles.

I can excuse blocking, something that can be taught, seem like Hamler and Dotson for their size do it successfully. Shorter was recruited as a wide receiver, he's # 1 priority is catch the ball.
Watched plenty of games where catching the ball isn't an issue, Franklin's message to anyone is get open , block , catch and you'll start.

Don’t post facts. The Franklin haters don’t tolerate them.

Franklin has chased LOTS of kids away over the past few years, and was most successful with O'Brien's players, so it's on him.

Seriously? I think your missing a few years.

Cherry picking followed by an assertion that is totally contradicted by his own cherry picked data (and by actual facts, but that’s besides the point)...
55-24 record after splitting Rutgers and the bowl = average record of 9-4. How many 9-4 teams end up ranked in the Top 10?

I hope Shorter stays but why would he declare for the portal with two games left and one going to be a bowl destination? It seems like a very emotional decision that family is probably involved with too. Again, I hope he stays and overcomes what ails him.

Its common for recruits from previous coaches to have conflict with a new coaching staff. But, I don't think you want to be burdened by facts. I think PSU is one of only 5 teams to be ranked (top 25) for about 54 consecutive weeks.
What is most refreshing however, is that I know I won't likely bump into your sorry ass at this years bowl game. But on the other hand, you do make me laugh out loud!

O'Brien's record..........at PSU 15-9.He had a roster the first year loaded with veteran players recruited by JoePa. Talk about a coach losing 2 games he should have won?
If Franklin drove OB's recruits away.....it was probably because many weren't very good.
BOB ran away before the worst impact of the sanctions.....but we are ignoring circumstances, right?

Let’s please put this into perspective.

Franklin is elite! Penn State is so close to Bama, O$U, Clemson, Georgia, LSU, and Oklahoma. They are CFB’s elite.

IF PSU wins its next two games they will have won 42 games from 2016-19.

IF they were to win 11 games next year, it will be the winningest 5 yr stretch in school history!

I’m a JoeBot but I can not deny what is taking place. Franklin has returned PSU to prominence. Lock this guy up long term. WTF!

This doesn’t really seem that complicated to me. Once a player has made up his mind that he wants out, he wants to find out as quickly as possible what his real options are and make a decision where he is going next. Add to that the risk of getting injured by playing and practicing for an additional 2 games and 5 weeks, which would result in no options. And finally, with the Thanksgiving break and then semester break coming up it gives the kid time to consult with his family, visit schools, etc.

I get the abandoning your team angle, but in the world the NCAA has enabled, the timing actually makes perfect sense.

I'll concede that he could(and should) have entered the portal on (this coming) Sunday. I think there will be a lot of traffic on that highway between the end of the regular season and the bowl.
Shorter has lived with this group of guys for 2 years. Putting your needs above the team at that point has no justification, in my mind. You created a distraction for the sake of 1 more game. Sorry, I think that says something about the character of the individual.
I think he's been frustrated (as I'm sure the coaches are as well) with his lack of progress ( only they disagree on the root causes) and CJF gave him a stern rebuke on the sidelines last week (can you imagine the horror) and Justin and his family threw the obligatory hissy fit.

I hear you. I’m just not sure how much of a distraction a player leaving early who has basically contributed nothing to the team for 11 games really created? Not much I am guessing. These kids live this new world of college football and are used to it more than we are. If he was as miserable as he apparently was, he might have been more of a distraction staying.

And the injury risk is a real concern once you are 100% sure you are leaving. If he blew out a knee today, he wouldn’t be transferring anywhere.

I agree it would have been cleaner to enter the portal tonight, but as has been said before, don’t judge a man until you’ve walked a mile in his shoes. I’m over it.

My early nomination for dumbest post of the year and 100% inaccurate.

Didn't know about the rebuke by JF. But, I bet it was a factor in Shorter entering the portal right after the game. JF did the right thing, its called coaching. Lombardi always said that he never knew a man who was worth his weight in salt that didn't yearn for discipline.

Constructive criticism by JF during a game is what a coach should be doing. If Shorter wants to pout and leave, so be it.
