That's been a tug of war forever.

College is big business on all fronts, academics and athletics. If schools truly cared about the student or the mission, the inflation of tuition costs would be more in line with macro economic inflation numbers. But they’re not because both academic send athletics treat it all as a business. I’m sure you can fire half the administrative staff at any university and not miss a beat.
