Northwestern 7 Duke 21

Difficult situation for NW with Thorsen only able to play about 2/5 of the snaps.

He's thrown the ball 38 times. Other qb is at 17 (and counting).

It's ok. That weak West schedule kicks in soon.
NW with a clear advantage in the stats.....first downs, time of possession, yards gained. Big factor 2 turnovers. One thrown by one of the backups, with NW leading 7-0.

2 turnovers the difference as NW had a clear advantage in the stats.

The only stat really matters is the final score. Unless of course you’re PITT.

Did Duke score off both turnovers?

Put an asterisk on NW's stat advantage; the Duke QB Daniel Jones went down in the 3rd quarter after throwing for 3 TDs in the first half. The Duke win was not a fluke, as their defense made key stops and preserved the lead.

The same ol', same ol' - mediocre O-line play (losing both starting tackles didn't help), which amplifies the problem of receivers who can't get separation and win 50/50 balls (best receiver NU has had over the past decade was a walk-on).

The 2 fast offensive players on the team are hurt.

Both further exacerbated by the insipid playcalling.

Fitz's weaknesses including being loyal to a fault and being stubborn.

Unless he's willing to make certain changes, NU will never win the West.

Lost to Duke badly last year. And lost to Western Michigan at home two years ago.

Fitz just has not recruited well on offense. They don't have an OL, they don't have a running back, they don't have the kind of wideouts they used to have.

I've always felt Thorson -- certainly based on his performances against PSU -- was overrated. He just isn't mobile enough to play in that offense, behind an OL that can't protect him. NW needs a QB who can run. These 6-4, 6-5 statues with NFL arms just don't work for them.

I just don't love Fitz. He is one of the worst sideline whiners out there. He has always coached Northwestern defenders to hit with thier helmets and try to knock QBs out of the game. Was very glad the B1G finally brought the hammer down on him in the PSU game last year.

Generally agree with you, but they do have a pretty good running back. Jeremy Larkin has had 2 100-yard+ games and also caught 11 passes. Not real big, but has good moves and some speed.
