Left early to beat the snow storm (Monday, headed to Pittsburgh), with no trouble at all on Wednesday, as we arrived on time in St. Louis. First bit of news saddened me, as we heard just after landing that the decision was made to pull Nick. Hate to see any kid with an unfulfilled dream, though the good news is Nick has 3 years remaining. Still tough.

Socializing
We’re there for the wrestling, but socializing is a huge part too. Saw many old friends, and met some new, so a shout out to NoVa, hockeygod (and Mrs. hockeygod), tikk, oldlion, androcles, gumby, and many others for adding to my memories. Thanks all!!

The Tournament
Wow, just wow. A little bittersweet, as Jimmy and Matt didn’t reach their dreams, but did contribute 8.5 points to the team score, and I’m sure were there supporting their team mates. Then there was Nevills, contributing 10 points with a 5th Place finish in his first tournament. Good job Nick!! The remaining 5 guys were CHAMPS, with a capital C-H-A-M-P-S. I personally, even with a cup half full, would have given the chance of 5 consecutive wins, at <5%, but that’s why they wrestle the matches.

The night before day 3, I was talking to some wrestler’s parents, and the question of a slight letdown after the semifinal blitz (obviously all 5 guys won then too) on Friday came up. Zain’s pin of Sorensen, Nolf’s major of Berger, Joseph’s “upset” win over Massa, Hall’s determined (again an “upset”) win over Valencia, and Bo’s pin of Brooks, was as good as it gets, so how in the world would the guys react in the finals the next day. Well, in less than 24 hours we would find out.

The Finals
We had consensus. In 2 matches, we were very confident (you know the ones). For the other 3, our minds were saying one upset (by seed), hopefully two. Fans discussed running the table, but as I said, placed the odds pretty low. At that point, PSU had the National Championship sewed up, so whatever happened was icing on the cake. Little did we know that we would be witnessing, in my humble opinion, the greatest run of wrestling in Penn State’s history. You saw the matches, so no need to say anything more here, though I would suggest you listen to Jeff’s call of all 5 matches, and particularly the Joseph bout. We had the clip Sunday Morning at breakfast, a room full of PSU fans, and passed around the smart phone for all to hear. It’s a classic.

The Data
Statistically speaking, the team was 35-6 (85%) for the tournament, an unheard of winning percentage, and maybe the best ever…though that would take some time to check out. I’m pretty sure 6 losses for a championship team is the lowest ever, but again, it needs to be confirmed. 146.5 Points was Penn State’s highest ever, eclipsing the 2012 team’s 143. Among the 36 wins were 21 Bonus Point victories (7 Falls, 9 Tech’s, and 5 Majors), for 32.5 Team Bonus Points, or an extra champ plus 4th Place finisher (like having 2 extra wrestlers). Placement Points were 87 (59% of all points), Bonus were 32.5 (22%), and Advancement were 27 (18%), rounded. We had the #1, #2, #3, #6, and #7 scoring wrestlers in the tournament. The only 3 Bonus Point victories in the Finals were registered by PSU Wrestlers.

The Rest
I don’t remember any egregious calls during this tournament. Plenty of reviews, and many were stretches by coaching staffs, though it’s one of the prices paid for “getting it right”. No outrageous behaviors, or memorable “moments” from any wrestler or coaching staff either, despite the high anxiety for many of them…after all, it is the National Tourney.

St. Louis did an awesome job hosting…again. Day 1 was a pain, as the security system went down and prevented entry at Scottrade…until they decided to let us enter without metal detection screening. Didn’t miss any matches though, so all was good. Our group ended up eating pretty far from the arena, and St. Louis has a lot to offer, so that was good too. The Parkway Hotel was again awesome, and after several stays there, will do so again the next time St. Louis is host.

The Wrestlers
I can’t say enough about how these young men represent Penn State, interact with fans, and support each other. Personally had several interactions with them and the managers, and it was always as if they were on a Sunday stroll, not part of the biggest college wrestling tournament there is. When they could, they would be mat-side, supporting their team mates, and would be the first to meet them after a bout, win or lose. Nolf’s presence during/after the Cenzo bout with IMar, is one of those moments, and it’s etched in my mind forever. Really good stuff.

The Social
The PSWC Social after the finals was a cool event ;). Coach spoke, and each of the 9 qualifiers spoke. Very eloquent, all 9. Again, food was great, company was great, and the mood was sky high after winning the 5 Championship bouts.

Those others were the icing on the cake, with ice cream, whipped cream and sprinkles, and even a brandy afterwards if you would like. That was more awesome that the 7-0 run against Okla. St., great summation Roar :)

Thanks for the write-up Roar. You stated all 9 spoke, care to share any of Suriano's comments? Life's journey threw him a curveball, had to be exuberant yet frustrating to be stuck in the tunnel/stands. TIA

Taking him to NCAA's was a no-brainer for the staff. He now understands without wrestling a match, how grueling the tournament is.

What he stated, with his dad standing behind him, was how grateful, yet disappointed he was. Said it was part of a bigger plan.

None of the guys spoke very long, and I personally enjoyed each and every one, though I chuckled at Zain. The person that controlled the music between wrestlers played over a minute of Johnny Cash before lowering the music to let Zain speak. Zain kept looking back at Jeff, sort of like "what should I do?". He finally just relaxed and enjoyed the music, but instantly (when we lowered the volume) said it pumped him up and he was ready for another match or two.

Love this post. As an attendee, I can't say enough of the great experience I had.
- I stayed with my brother-in-law and missed a phenomenal St Patty's day parade/neighborhood party on Friday. However, no regrets as they simply didn't understand what I was attending.
- I had two different seat tickets due to my wife attending some sessions. I got down to the lower section (from the bud light zone) for the finals and was overwhelmed being in the PSU section as the Nitts rolled the finals. Shout out to Marlene who hooked me up with the tick!
- The 'roll' of the semi's was remarkable as well. Not only with the PSU run but with some of the rival teams falling to the wayside starting right off the bat at 125.
- I have always been a Jimmy fan and was happy for his 3-2 finish. Really wanted another takedown against Jack.
- These wrestlers are warriors. All are nicked up to an extent and we all need to keep that in consideration when some of them go 'down' or wrestle the way we want them to.
- Got to witness something that will be hard to duplicate. I hope everyone appreciates that. It is hard to beat someone three times in a row (IMAR) and that goes with our guys as well. IMAR, Massa,Valencia, Jordan and others are all back next year.
- Horrible news during the 11.5 hour drive to St. Lou about Nick S. As the bracket fell out, his odds increased in winning a national championship.
- Regret not attending the social but the 'visit' with the in-laws had to start some time!

http://olympics.nbcsports.com/2017/...ark-throw-video-ncaa-championships-wrestling/ Would this fall under unusual behavior or i guess he seems to be like this on a regular basis. Thanks for the info. Jeffs byers is the best

Wife and I was there also. We did the Primesport package. It was nice but looking back we may have spend more money than we should. I will say we had great seats. Club seats C-117 Perfect view of all mats. The food was pretty good. We ate all sessions there and didn't have to spend money on food. It was part of the package. We got to meet Jordan Burroughs, David Taylor and the great Bruce Baumgarder. That was awesome as the guys took the time to chat with you after the pictures was taken. My wife knows David because he goes to her barber shop so he was very nice to her. She enjoy that as much as the wrestling.

The PSU wrestlers were well, what can you say that hasn't been said already. What a performance!!!! It made a great trip just that more wonderful with all the winning by PSU wrestlers.

St Louis is a great place to hold this event. Only draw back it is a 11 1/2 hour drive. It sucked going out. Weather wise it was so windy. A few places close to a white out. This was Wednesday morning after the storm. Didn't clear up until about midway thru Ohio. But on the other side of things. I now know how to get to Lucas Oil stadium in Indy.. Drove right by it. When PSU plays in the Big Ten Championship game. (I know play the season first). lol

Looking forward to Cleveland next year. Wife said one or the other football or wrestling but she had such a great time, I bet it's going to be wrestling. Great season, great tournament and a great vacation. Thanks Nittany Lions wrestlers.

Thanks, Roar. Glad to read you all had a blast.

BSD's Clay & Garrett filmed the PSWC social and did FB Live with it. Looks like you can still watch it at this link:

--- we were fortunate enough to grab a standing table with 1 chair for the social, we gave the chair to an older gentleman who attended the 1953 tournament --- it was awesome to hear his recollection from back then ...

the boys are extremely humble - sincere - and welcoming

NOT like us, a decent size group of guys in their 40s who act like we are just turning 21! Too many laughs, too many ball busting jokes, too many properly chilled beverages!

Bring on Cleveland!

My experience this time around was pretty special, partly for being able to spend a good deal of time with people I've already met through these boards (Roar is as nice in real life as you'd guess from his online persona, btw), and partly because I was on the floor for much of the event, shooting away. I mentioned elsewhere here that I managed to get photo credentials through Columbia University, who sent two wrestlers. (Tyrel White (165) lost his pigtail and lost a close consi match; and Garrett Ryan (HWT) won his first match before facing Kyle Snyder, then losing again to go 1-2.) My undergrad degree is in photography and I was a professional commercial photographer for most of the 1990s but I've never done sports photography, professionally anyway. I shoot all the local NYC stuff (Beat the Streets, Bill Farrell, etc.) but from the crowd.

So suddenly being credentialed on the floor of the NCAAs was like Make-a-Wish Foundation territory, only without the inconvenience of a terminal illness. Rented a monster zoom lens, reached out to Justin Hoch (one of the best wrestling photographers in my opinion), who graciously lent wisdom by email and was just as warm and helpful in person.

I'd like to think I made the best of it (photos here, still adding to gallery) but I learned a lot about the specific craft and my technical limitations with my setup--my Fuji, even with its monster zoom lens, has the pristine glass of a Leica; but Canon/Nikon are built for sports in mechanical ways Fuji won't ever be. If I ever take the next step I'll either rent or invest in a Nikon or Canon setup.

Anyway, the experience of sharing the floor and hallways with coaches, wrestlers, video crews, and other photographers was a rare privilege. A part of my brain expected someone to escort me outside any second. I was frequently standing next to coaches talking strategy or what was going on at Mat X. From my conversations with other photographers and overheard questions I got the sense that I knew more about the wrestlers, coaches, and narratives than most. For some it was just a job--checking names off their lists and getting out of their as soon as possible.

The physical part of shooting was a challenge, especially when you're 48, don't normally do this, and have bad knees (ironically, from wrestling). I was instantly jealous of the photographers who wore knee pads. Thursday's 8-mat configuration relegated photographers to a thin sliver of space on each end, making shooting the interior mats more difficult, especially when nearer-mat traffic would interfere. If there's ever a need for a gallery of referees' asses, I'm your man.

Friday night's semifinals were the best--the 6-mat configuration meant that photographers could sit on chairs (oh YEAH!), mat-side of either semi. Cruz took down Gilman with no time remaining about 15 feet from me. Zain practically snapped Sorensen in half around the same place. I wish I'd had the presence of mind to run to the other mat to get a better shot of Bo pinning Sammy Brooks because I wound up with mostly obstructed shots.

Saturday morning I watched the medal round from section 106, sitting with Mr and Ms HockeyGod, good friends with whom I sat last year. I was too exhausted to go to lunch with everyone but realized I was going to need to eat something so eventually went to Applebee's downstairs from the Parkway hotel. I met Zain's dad there and we talked for about an hour. Just a great guy with a great family.

Photography credentialing for the finals works differently than sessions 1-5, you need to apply for any match you want and they're granted on a per match basis. Since Columbia didn't have anyone in the finals I was out-prioritized by photographers who genuinely needed those spots. I went up to the sky level and shot down from there; a few shots came out great but the distant, fixed vantage limited what I could do. A few other photographers were up there with me, and some other media people. I broke media-neutrality protocol and kind of went nuts when Cenzo pinned Imar, but I wasn't alone.

Went down to the floor and hung around the team as they signed autographs and glowed from their monumental achievement, which I doubt any could fully appreciate. Those shots didn't come out great, made the mistake of having a long-ish, fixed lens with me, but didn't want to run out for fear I'd miss something. Then onto to the social, where I finally ditched my yellow NCAA vest and media pass. I downed a few well-earned Bud Lights and shook Cael's hand on his way up to the podium. Back at the hotel, I said good-byes and quickly processed that evening's shots. Packed, slept two hours, and was at the airport by 6 am. Still recovering but what a great time.
