"Masters of the Air" trailer released

The man who took a chance and hired me fresh out of college was named Norm Graham. Norm was from Jeannette PA. He was the lead navigator for the 100th Bomb Group, 351st Squadron. He replaced a man named Alfred Paterno. Norm was the lead navigator when the war ended.

On crappy days, Norm would tell us stories.

  • Having been sent out in his B17 as a decoy, he was one of the first to see a jet, an ME 262
  • He believes he was the only Navigator to shoot down a German fighter, a Focke 190
  • He was initially sent, by mistake, as a gunner and had a handful of sortes as a gunner before they realized the mistake and sent him back to complete his Nav training. he then returned to England as a Nav
  • He had several stories of the local ladies near their base Polebrook, they liked the US airmen
  • He had an opportunity to take a ride to see the concentration camps before heading back to the US
  • A woman once beat him up at a party when she learned he was a US airman. She was in the German city of Dortman, which Norm helped bomb. She later met a US soldier and married him moving to the USA.
  • He could tell you how to arrange 200 B-17s in the air to set out to bomb Germany
  • His longest flight was when they went deep into Germany and couldn't get back so continued to land in North Africa. There, they flew to the USA after repairs. After further repairs, flew back to England.

Great guy to remember so near to Veterans Day.

Worked with a guy whose dad flew a bomber. Told an interesting story about how they were in Germany and visiting a city that his dad had bombed and how he matter of fact pointed out a lot of the targets. The son was a bit concerned but the dad pointed out the war was over and he won.
