FC: Yankees, Flyers dump Kate Smith's 'God Bless America'...

I assume she was under contract from one of the record companies and was basically given material from a song writer to perform. If you're going to crucify Kate Smith over this, crucify the song writer, the record company, CBS and NBC (the two broadcast companies in the 30's) also.

To me the song is no big deal, though in general, I do agree about the faux patriotism invoked in sports, especially football.
For example, it always bugged me that the NFL got paid (in taxpayer dollars) for promoting the military while making sure their players avoided service. Of course they always piously trot out the outliers like Rocky Bleier and Pat Tilman. But that's another story.
Meanwhile, I will continue to watch Woody Allen movies, those produced by Harvey Weinstein and the funny detective flicks with OJ.
Euros do it too. Also, do you watch CONCACAF? The patriotism at USA sporting events isn't unique to the USA.

During his famous debates with Sen. Stephen Douglas, (Abraham) Lincoln explained to the crowd: “I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races … I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be a position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.”
So you make an interesting point about any comments ever made being used to destroy your reputation. Especially when you cannot defend yourself. Times change, people and norms do as well. Having said that, I agree with the teams. They are in the entertainment business. This is why I supported putting a muzzle on Colin Kap (while agreeing with his underlying sentiment). These teams cannot allow any semblance or picking sides.
This just goes to show that every successful politician panders. But what the racists who cite this never mention is that Lincoln's views evolved on the subject and became much more progressive.
https://www.rbhayes.org/hayes/lincoln-s-evolving-racial-views/
PS: Women didn't get the vote until the 20th century - which makes everyone before that a misogynist.

Coincidentally I saw a list of completely racist advertisements from the early to mid 1900s. Many of the companies are still around today. I understand the sensitivity today, but it was a completely different word back then and what is obviously racist today was much more tolerated back then.

List of artists we can no longer listen to, read, or watch:

Wagner (Anti-Semite.)

Roman Polanski (Director. Drugged and raped a 14/15 year old girl. Too bad...the Pianist was a good movie but should obviously never be watched again.)

Michael Jackson (Pedo.)

Kate Smith (See above)

William Golding (Author of Lord of the Flies - tried to rape a 15 year old girl.)

J.D. Salanger (Author and pedo. Had a 14 year old “girlfriend”.)

Ezra Pound (Poet and anti-Semite.)

T.S. Eliot (Poet and anti-Semite.)

H.P. Lovecraft (Writer and racist.)

Virginia Woolf (Writer and anti-Semite.)

Dr. Seuss (Before disavowing racism he drew overtly racist cartoons of the Japanese during WWII.)

Bryan Singer (Director and way too many accusations of sex with underage boys. So, a pedo.)

Luc Besson (Famous French director and pedo. 15 year old “girlfriend” while in the US and at 16 she gave birth to his kid. Also, supposedly the uncut version of the Professional with a young Natalie Portman is pretty disturbing.)

R. Kelly (Yowzers.)

Artists:

Paul Gauguin: Pedo

Picasso: Big time misogynist that psychology wrecked almost every woman he was with and allowed a young daughter to live with her mother in poverty to teach them a lesson. How could any decent person possibly admire a painting by this man?

Caravaggio - Pimp and a murderer! Who knew?

Degas: Anti-Semite.

Where is the line drawn? Why are some violations of morality okay while others require condemnation? Don’t try to answer. There is no logic to this political correct lunacy.

Looks like Flyers are taking down the statue of Kate Smith

It might not be, but it is as phony as a $3 bill.
Well, I've attended hockey games this last season in Columbus, Pittsburgh, Nashville and Vegas. During the national anthem, you would be hard pressed to find anyone that didn't stand and take their hat off (if they had one). I'd say over 50% sing along to the anthem. To me, that is pretty impressive participation. At PSU games it is the same.

I see what you did there. Slim Pickens 'movies should also be banned. That was a favorite line of Slim's

Fat people find the name Slim offensive. It should be banned.

Furthermore, we shouldn’t use the word fat. No judging, period.

Back at ya amigo. I didn't make any claim as to what the third stanza may or may not have meant. Thus the word "discuss". It's interesting to me how simply requesting a discussion leads to childish name calling on your part. That tells us all where your head is.

Amigo?

we've got to judge the judge.

It is clear that people that have an iPhone X and then a home button iPad are bigoted and prejudice. I once saw a white man in Birmingham have that combination of devices.

Over the years I've become less and less of Flyers fan strictly because of their management and them being SO stuck in the past. Kudos to them for doing this and hopefully it sets them on the right path for the future.

If I see one more pre-game ceremony I'm gonna lose my $#!T

So is Wayne Simmonds. He stood by for years listening to that racist Kate Smith and did nothing about it. (Insert eye roll here).

To a previous post - it’s a little of both. The people who dig the shit up and the people who are offended are equally responsible.
Simmonds is Canadian.

Don't go to the Nov. 16 PSU vs. Indiana: game...It is Military Appreciation Day!

by the attendance, looks more like a Pitt game.

See the link below. From the article:

"(CNN) -- For years, baseball's New York Yankees and hockey's Philadelphia Flyers have played singer Kate Smith's famous rendition of "God Bless America" during games.

But those long-time traditions have been halted over allegations that other songs performed by Smith -- one of America's biggest singing stars during the early 20th century -- are racist.

Smith is closely tied to the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers because she performed "God Bless America" before Flyers games in the 1970s. A year after her 1986 death, the team erected a statue in her honor outside of its arena.

Now the team won't play her version of the song during games and will cover up her statue.

"We have recently become aware that several songs performed by Kate Smith contain offensive lyrics that do not reflect our values as an organization," the Flyers said in a statement to CNN.

"As we continue to look into this serious matter, we are removing Kate Smith's recording of 'God Bless America' from our library and covering up the statue that stands outside of our arena."

The Yankees said the team also was no longer playing Smith's iconic 1939 version of the song because she sang at least two songs during the 1930s that are now considered racist."

Not a surprising decision in today's sensitive climate.
If the fans want to still sing it, they won't be stopped.

Agree with all of this except OJ. I cannot stomach the sight of his visage, unless he is in an orange jumpsuit.

Even more outrageous!!!!

Duh - my comment was tongue in cheek. I don’t think Simmons’s even knew about Picaninny Heaven (just like the rest of humanity not born before 1931).

I believe the main issue here is what is the driving force behind people going back to find racism from 80 years ago and to make it fresh today. Considering the practices of singing God Bless America has been going for decades. Why is it now, all of a sudden, someone at the New York newspaper is triggered by a recording from 80 years ago. No doubt the lyrics are offensive, but why all of a sudden is it too much, and this needs to be brought to light. The whole process is sinister

Secondly, what does this do for anyone? Other than those who can benefit from racial divide, who benefits from bringing up recordings from 80 years ago???

The rational question most people ask - who is doing this research to find these types of things? The song was recorded 88 years ago. So it has been okay up until today?

On the other hand, kudos to the Flyers for being so “woke”. How hard can I roll my eyes at this non-story “story”. By this time next week, it will be forgotten.

Well, I just found both songs on YouTube in about three seconds. Tough to argue that they are not racist.

As a Flyers fan, I applaud the team's swift reaction in light of this news.

If you sing the lyrics, “Someone had to pick the cotton. … That’s why darkies were born," you get what you deserve.

Regardless, Lauren Hart is better.

What about rappers that want to **** bitches and put ca ap in ni##ers asses lyrics. Their condoms are coming off but it is so ****ing wet and soft.

Is that offensive? Kanya said ***** aint messin with no broke ni##a.

Plenty of sports teams have no problem playing that Mo Bama song despite is extremely profane, racist and obscene lyrics.

Enough of this B.S. about what people did, said, sang 50 to 100 years ago. It was different time. Was it right/wrong is not for me to judge. It is our Lord's. We have all done/said things that we regret; let it go.

These rushes to Judgement and those who make them are idiotic.

You prove my point for me. Without the media attention, those things just sat there for decades. No one thought twice about it for 80 years. I don’t question the lyrics, and agree. I would be willing to bet that if this story did not come up, you would have gone the rest of your life without knowing that Kate Smith sang a song called Picaninny Heaven.

But who is going back through 80 years of recorded footage to find anything triggering? You don’t find that to be troubling? For me, that is the talking point here.

Personally, all of these little tear down things from history are building towards making a case for reparations. The Globalists are going to wipe away the middle class, take their wealth by force, that most of them built through hard work. Give it to the lower classes, and then we will all be in the same class. Socialism wins because everything else has morals.

"Reparations, "globalists", "lower classes", "socialism", "morals"?
Code words: It's a conspiracy of the reparations-seeking globalist lower class socialistic immoral people against decent people like you, that's what it is!
And here I thought all we were talking about was inappropriate banning of a song, not making comments on breitbart.

Or, YOU could stop being so butthurt about everything which you suspect might make a white person feel less superior.
Since I have seen you in public and I know that you are white, I must ask: Why do you feel superior demlion? Your comments are frequently from a position of one who claims to be superior intellectually, morally and in so many other ways. What makes you so "good"?

Let me clarify. The phony patriotism comes from the NFL itself. They did and do it for money. The crowd reaction is genuine.

Well.....since we just learned the earth is really flat, I feel the Flyers should vacate their 2 Stanley Cup Championships. If you eliminate KS from their history.....they never win those cups.

I’m not sure that it matters why the songs were uncovered as much as what the songs say.
I will say that my mother and father would both be in their early 80s if they were alive and were raised in fairly racist families. They both knew that calling people “darkies” was not alright.
