So here is the deal: I was comfortably sitting here in Germany ready to retire and set aside the boots and uniform for good in two years. I have 18 years in. Not that I don't love my job, because I do. Nothing provides me more satisfaction than taking care of my Airmen and defending our Great Country.
Now my dilemma: I was offered a possible position as a First Sergeant. If I take that position I am obligated for another four years (for those keeping track 2 years after my planned retirement). If I retired at 20 years I would be 45 yrs of age ( I Joined late). Also I would have more time to devote to my wife and kids, finish my degree through PSU, and never have to deploy again.
On the other hand if I do become a First Sergeant I can take care of the Airmen who serve us and hopefully make them more effective. Which I would also love to do. Any advice? Leaning toward the 1st Sergeant thing, but any input from anyone with experience would be appreciated. Thank you.
Mike
