C: Bench, Ivan Rodriquez
1B: Pujols, Rose (Rose over McCovey as that gives me some versatility)
2B: Morgan, Carew
SS: A Rod., Jeter (assuming A. Rod started juicing later in his career)
3B: Schmidt, Brett
OF: Mays, Griffey
OF: Aaron, Gwynn
OF: Clemente, Suzuki

Great list, John. I began loving baseball in 1958. So, my changes are below.

C: Bench, Berra
1B: Pujols, Musial
2B: Morgan, Carew
SS: A Rod., Jeter (assuming A. Rod started juicing later in his career)
3B: Schmidt, Brett
OF: Mays, Mantle
OF: Aaron, Ted Williams
OF: Clemente, Frank Robinson

If you allow for a DH: Killebrew, Barry Bonds

C: Johnny Bench, Mike Piazza
1B: Pete Rose, Hank Aaron
2B: Rod Carew, Joe Morgan
SS: Cal Ripken Jr., Ozzie Smith
3B: Mike Schmidt, George Brett
RF: Tony Gwinnett, Reggie Jackson
CF: Ken Griffey Jr., Kirby Puckett
LF: Rickey Henderson, Lou Brock

1984 is the first year I have any sort of memory of. So it really starts there. I've decided to exclude some known Steroids guys (Clemens, Bonds and A-Rod).

Catcher: Piazza, Posada

1B: Pujols, Cabrera (well, Cabrera has played more 1B than anywhere else)

2B: Sandberg, Cano

SS: Jeter, Trammell (someone from my 80s era Tigers! But I do honestly think he's a better player than Ozzie or Cal.)

3B: Schmidt, Brett

LF: Rickey, Rock Raines

CF: Griffey JR, Trout

RF: Tony Gwynn, Larry Walker

DH: none. Real baseball does not involve a DH.

SP (right-handed): Greg Maddux, Pedro Martinez

SP (left-handed): Randy Johnson, Kershaw

Any list that doesn't include Clemente or Mays is a dumb list.

And where is the starting pitching?

RF: Clemente, Aaron
CF: Mays, Cobb
LF: Williams, Bonds
1B: Gehrig, Greenberg
2B: Robinson, Morgan
SS: H. Wagner, Banks
3B: Robinson, Schmidt
C: Bench, Fisk
P: Mathewson, Koufax

No offense, but the title of the original post said "in your lifetime."

Roberto Clemente, great player. And God Bless the tragedy of his death - but he was dead before I even came onto the scene.

Sorry!

I was lucky enough to see Mays and Clemente in person at Forbes Field when I was but a young buck. Along with Bob Moose, Ed Ott, Willy McCovey, Al Oliver, and many more. I sat in the center field bleachers and Willy was about 25 feet from me. He was a god!

Roberto climbed the ivy to field a fly. I don't remember much more.

It was a great day!

Choices are very good but Nolan Ryan needs to be included as a pitcher.

RF: Clemente, Aaron
CF: Mays, Cobb
LF: Williams, Bonds
1B: Gehrig, Greenberg
2B: Robinson, Morgan
SS: H. Wagner, Banks
3B: Robinson, Schmidt
C: Bench, Fisk
P: Mathewson, Koufax

I had thought of making a pitching staff post, but then if you look at the starters from my generation, I thought there would almost be a consensus: Gibson, Seaver, Palmer, Maddux, Pedro, R. Johnson, Carlton and Clemens (I didn't see Koufax pitch). Relievers if you have a righty and a lefty, I'd go Rivera and Chapman.

The OP said in your lifetime.... I wasn’t alive during the careers of many of your guys...

Not really much of a baseball guy anymore, and mostly from my youth

Catcher: Bench, Fisk
OF: Clemente, Gwynn
OF: Maddox, Griffey, Jr.
OF: Suzuki, Brock
1B: Garvey, Stargell
2B: Sandberg, Morgan
SS: Ripken, Jeter
3B: Schmidt, Robinson
Starting Pitchers: Carlton, Guidry
Relief Pitchers: Gossage, Fingers (mostly because of the moustache)

Time to execute "Operation Shutdown" on this thread! This post is the winner!

I'm pretty close to your list. Time frame starts about 1952.

C: Bench, Berra
1B: Musial, Pujols
2B: Jackie Robinson, Joe Morgan
3B: Schmidt, Boggs
SS: Jeter, Ernie Banks
OF: Aaron, Frank Robinson
OF: Mays, DiMaggio
OF: Ted Williams, Mantle
Starting Pitcher: Koufax, Gibson
Relief Pitcher: Rivera, Gossage

Posluszny and Buttle.....

Unless you’re talking NFL, I which case it’s Lambert and Singletary.
That's exactly how I read the title before opening the thread.
Off the top of my head I'm going with Poz and Short. But I am willing to be wrong. :)

How did I ever forget Ernie Banks? "Let's p[lay 2!" Good pick over ARod. Agree totally on your starting pitchers, but I might be go with Elroy Face (that 18-1 record was amazing) over Goose Gossage.

Side note: I never got to see Joe DiMaggio play, but he was a family friend of my grandparents who had all sorts of photos of him. Apparently some of my grandparents' relatives knew the DiMaggios in Sicily and they hooked up somewhere near San Francisco in the USA. My family then got to Erie and the whole Penn State thing began some time later.

I certainly agree that Roy Face is deserving to be on this list.

My father-in-law was a steelworker. Back in the mid-1970s the steelworkers had a picnic at Renzie Park in McKeesport. I got to go. Roy Face showed up. I ended up sitting at a table with him playing low stakes poker and drinking beer. He was a small, very ordinary looking guy. He was retired from baseball for a few years and was working as a carpenter! Back then baseball salaries were low. I'm glad to see that he is still alive and doing well at age 90.

That's a neat story. I was always a bit of a Pirates fan back then because all their games were played on the radio where we were living, albeit some of them on a tape-delay. Face, Law, Friend, Groat, Hoak, Skinner, Stuart ("Dr. StangeGlove"). Awww, nice memories.

That was back when players weren't pigs and got reasonable salaries. Also, back then Pittsburgh was a major city and could support a major league team. The Pirates had good players back then. Unfortunately, now Pittsburgh is no longer a major US city and can't afford to field a decent team.

I was born in 61. Earliest memories are 69 Mets. I'll go with the 2-division era. Mays, Aaron and Clemente were at the
twilight of their careers. Or, they'd be on there. I consider them more 50's/60's guys.

LF Bonds, Henderson
CF Trout, Griffey Jr
RF Reggie/Winfield
C Bench, Pudge Rodriguez
1B Pujols, Cabrera
2B Robbie Alomar/Joe Morgan
SS Jeter/A-Rod
3B Schmidt/Brett
DH Ortiz/Edgar Martinez
SP Clemens/Randy Johnson
RP Mariano/Fingers
